2nd film from Brick director Rian Johnson. I liked Brick and scam/heist films are like bacon for meTrailer here: http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/thebrothersbloom/
Plus: Mark Ruffalo, Rachel WeiszMinus: Off-the-scale "quirk" and "wacky." Adrian Brody dislikers will continue to dislike.
Still I wanna see it, and I'll probably be at most of the films in the Rian Johnson's Festival Of Fakery at the New Beverly in February.

does look bad and boring a bit like brick

liked brick but gay this is bad, so self-consciously mannered and cute. wes anderson has a lot to answer for imo

also this is another heist/scam movie that basically forgets to have a good heist/scam, it's actually pretty terrible, and that always annoys me

s1ocki otm, I have a huge soft spot for Brick, was anticipating this based on the cast and thought it pretty much completely sucked.

Went in expecting zero and felt like I got my money's worth. Worth going if only to see Rinko Kikuchi run away with the whole movie.

Brick was great - this was far from it. I'm very surprised the same director could have so mismanaged this. Especially in the second half where everything just drags, gets too serious and overly preoccupied with the nature of "the con". I actually enjoyed the lighter, quirkier stuff in it, but that goes by the wayside far too soon. Weiss and Kikuchi were great, at least (if the latter could have only gotten some more lines). Definitely agreed with s1ocki about the lame heists in what is a heist film (or replace heist with con).

did anyone else think this was a really brazen wes anderson homage/ripoff/cop?

oh wait slocki already suggested that above. so i'm not alone.
― amateurist, Thursday, 22 October 2009 07:06 (fifteen years ago)
ha we just watched this last night and i had that thought within oh five minutes of the movie starting
this was fairly fun, the plot didn't make any sense and the whimsy was pretty thick but it was pretty to look at and so was rachel weisz

otm re. plot not making any sense.
wes anderson himself only seems loosely interested in plot, in the sense that it's really just there to hang his various motifs on. this film is like what happens if you then allow the plot part to completely atrophy. aside from its other flaws. but it was pleasant enough.

adrien brody is also pretty to look at.
― amateurist, Saturday, 24 October 2009 00:24 (fifteen years ago)
did this actually come out?

this was so great in so many ways that it didnt matter so much that the last three twists were nonsense.

totally otm. i didn't love Brick but i at least admired it as a promising debut, so sad to see the guy go from that to such a transparent bite of the most played out influence anyone could have these days.

I think the Mt Goats perf film is the best thing this guy will ever do

this was awful
― just sayin, Sunday, 23 January 2011 09:57 (fourteen years ago)
+ like amateurist said, the most blatant wes anderson biting ever
― just sayin, Sunday, 23 January 2011 09:58 (fourteen years ago)
lol i guess i'm on my own here then

honestly if the direction wasn't do derivative i probably would've enjoyed the story and performances more, they were not without charm.
