Belsize Park

i went out in belsize park last night, for the first time. it is very, uk, salubrious isn't it?

we went to a pub, sort of on the way to primrose hill i think, and all the people there had, like, cheese plates, and olives and stuff, which was really weird. and loads of people seemed to be drinking halfpints...

but it struck me that there were no dodgy people outside the tube station at all, which is really unusual for london (arsenal never had them either but then there are no shops and no buses outside arsenal, so no reason for people to hang around)

Ok, I've just moved from Brixton to Oval and the differences between the two are AMAZING. Oval is CLEAN, has one or two big issue sellers outside at any one time, CLEAN!!! No-one accosting you for travelcards, doesn't smell... oh hooray for Northern Line stations I am sure they are all as lovely ahem.

Lived in Belsize Park/Hampstead for three years. It's pretty nice, apart from noveaux riches display days every weekend. If you're after local tramps, the bus terminus at South End Green is the place to go.

The Gallaghers and Chris Evans used to hang around there a lot and if they aren't dodgy they are certainly fuckups. (Actually certain members of Dodgy - who are Dodgy - used to live round there too). I no like Belsize Park much. Surprisingly lousy restaurants. ROyal Free is a very good hospital though.

Suzy: The Steele's??

SW8 for me please. Although if you cross the road it's the haven of SW9. And a 5 minute walk and it's SE11. I live life on the edge (of many postcode boundaries).

Pete, it's a pretty good pub on Haverstock Hill.

suzy, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to like The Bale Of Hay. Don't know the Steele's. You beat me in a pub duel damnit. Must go back and do more research.

Pete, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

where are those 2 pubs? i can't remember which pub i was in. it may have been the washington. it was very posh

gareth, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bale Of Hay is sadly no more. I assume The Steele's is thge one on the far side of the road from the tube about 200 yards down the road.

Pete, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hugo Speer used to live in the Bale of Hay. Haverstock Arms is beside it, and Steeles is across the road pretty much at the junction of Steele's (d'oh) Road.

Do they actually have cherry blossoms in the market square or moonwashed college halls in Belsize Park, or was that just me?

You should try moving from Hampstead to Kensal Green...also Bale of Hay is now 'The Hill' and been trendified by Robert Newmark, owner of various Soho hang outs etc., looks great and worth a revisit, knocks socks off Steeles and Haverstock, unless you like 'proper olde pubs'
