I went through this question this week with my brother for his techie recommendations. He says: use your own encryption key (mozy.com let you do this). Reviews for Carbonite are terrible. There was something about not using companies that use not their own software, or something.I just went with Mozy - only 12 hours of upload to go...

I'm using SugarSync and it's terrific, though I guess it's primarily online sync for different computers than online backup: but your files are served online and so it is backup too.

Other useful things my bruv says:
- remember that if you delete or otherwise mess up a document by accident and don't notice until 31 days later, it's gone (from mozy, anyway).
- Mozy will delete files that you delete from your hard drive, so it's not extra storage, only backup.
- Mozy doesn't behave like a normal disk drive: you can't just copy files to or fro, you have to submit a request by email to restore files.
- remember to check occasionally that the backups are working properly - apparently it's 'popular and traditional' not to check that and then to discover you've messed something up at your end.

does mozy.com still work like this? the fact that it's only backup and not online storage is disappointing. im looking for a way to store *all* my music, films, documents and files online rather than spend months backing them up on dvd. i've got about 1.5tb of stuff on my pc i want to backup, and another 4tb already burned to disc that i'd like to upload as well. am i better off just buying a couple of 2tb hard drives and double-burning any vital files?

ideal online storage place would work like ftp, where i can go into and shift files around and rename and access them using a program like cuteftp. i'm guessing mozy doesn't do this?

imo the only good thing about online backup is that it's off-site.
your multi TB stuff sounds pretty archival so why not dump it all on some 2TB drives and put it somewhere else, like your parents' house?

yeah thats looking like a sensible option right now, it would be great to just stick it all up online and be able to access it all without having to rummage through dvds and unplugged hard drives. i'm sure comprehensive online storage will be cheap and popular enough in a few years, but mozy's service sounds too limited at the moment - £5 a month did seem surprisingly cheap!

I've heard good things about carbonite but have never tried it.
if your parents have broadband you might be able to set up a private server at their house, and do stuff while they're asleep so they won't miss the broadband.

err second broadband should be bandwidth
has anyone got any stats about the longevity and reliability of large (1tb+) hard drives? if they're more likely to fail if constantly plugged in or not, etc.

Can I use Mozy to backup about 200gb of Final Cut Pro files from external HD - y/n?
