OKAY, I'M SCARED NOW

Right, I have a talking Pikachu. Since repositioning him, the last few nights he has been saying goodnight (well "Pika!") when I switch the bedroom lights off. There's nothing on it that could be a light sensor, I've felt inside for wires, and I genuinely had trouble getting to sleep last night over this.

Even weirder, it only works when I swicth off the humdreds of fairy lights on my ceiling, not with the main room light. eg:

fairy lights -> darkness = Pika!
room light -> darkness = no pika
fairry lights + room light -> room light = no pika

Graham, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad the internet isn't really full of mentalists like the papers say.

N., Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(maybe I should point out that he's meant to talk WHEN YOU SQUEEZE HIM)

Graham, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

katie, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So every night before bed I sneak into your room and squeeze your Pikachu. JESUS! it's not the end of the world. I mean if I did it with the lights on you'd see me.

probably electromagnetic flux caused by the sudden change in voltage

mike hanle y, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you should just tear it to bits regardless. Evil evil Pokemon!!

robster, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i hear possessed pokemon go for $500 on ebay these days...

misterjones, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the very same talking pikachu - I just turned him off. He is GRATE. I assumed it was the sound of the light switch - or VOLTAGE, like wot Hanle y sez. After all he is an electronick pokémon.

Sarah, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You need to experiment more.

Does he Pika when he hits a wall? Does he Pika when you stamp on his head? Does he Pika when exposed to naked flames?

Science is a wonderful thing.

I had an ancient Philips record player that picked up Radio Moscow english langauge broadcasts when you din't put the needle down. This was in the eighties when I was a pup. It scared me the first time but I grew to love it.

misterjones, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So Graham, are you the samurai or the butterfly?

Dan Perry, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel an affinity with both.

Graham, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After further experimentation Pika! Chu appears to have light sensors attached under his/her (Sarah, what did we conclude on this?) fur on he/she/its back and head. Why it only responds to fairly lights I do not know, locking it the wardrobe didn't work. Perhaps it feels an affinity with unspeakably cute things.

Graham, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

An ex of mine bought me a duck that sang songs when you sqeezed his paw... he reacted to light switches too, but only ocasionally. Scared the living daylights out of me frequently, especially when I was in halls at uni, and I was next to the kitchen. On many occasions I was woken in the middle of the night by the scary singing duck.

To preserve my sanity the duck had his insides removed (batteries) I recommend the same for Pikachu.

celeste, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why so scared, graham? that is so cool! we do stuff like this on purpose in my house b/c we all went to engineering school and our minds are fucked for life as a result. when you open our freezer a demonic furby skeleton stripped of his fur laughs nonstop - and several sad clowns live in our fridge. i had friends in college who re-soldered the insides of their tomagotchis to make them do fucked up things, and someone i know remade their tickle-me-elmo so it would cry "rape" when you squeezed it. we took one of those dumb singing fish things that they sell at wal-mart, took out all but its most essential components, dressed its head up in a fish-sized gas mask, and added a dial so that you can alter the speed of its singing, etc. anyway, in my opinion you should be doing more, not less, to make things like this happen!

geeta, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

geoff says you should do a richard gere, insert the little thing in an empty orifice and then see what it has to report.

Graham, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The PC I'm on is chugging and snorting and weezing. I can feel the desk vibrate everytime it does it. I think it's gonna blow.

Graham, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's getting quite violent and has now been accompanied by an elaborate rattle.

ten months pass...
I'm staying on Oxford over the Easter holiday, as far as now everyone else has gone home, but... Yesterday morning the junk mail I left on the stairs the day before disappeared, and just now I heard creaking on the stairs and possible voices, but there was nothing when I checked. Nothing else in the house appears to have been touched. What the fuck is going on?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Could it be someone from the lettings agency or the landlord doing a quick inspection (assuming that you had all gone home for the holidays) or has one of your housemates possibly lent a key to a friend?

Unsettling, though.

C J (C J), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you still have the pika? Have you created an altar for him?

Polterghoosts!!!!!

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 10 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If I'm feeling paranoid that someone else is in the apartment, I first check that all doors/windows are locked. Then I go to the back of the apartment and check out that room. When I'm sure there's nowhere else anyone can hide in that room, I shut the door and proceed to the next room until I'm down at the front door and I know I'm safe.
