Do foreign film nominations count?
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)
If it's noms then I enjoyed Good Night and Good Luck amongst several, if it's winners I'm down to Unforgiven.

Anyone who doesn't think Babe is good was born without a heart.

Um, Silence of the Lambs
― Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)
. . . is not good.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)
Also Unforgiven. Haven't seen Chicago and American Beauty in years, but they'd probably also make the list. Still haven't seen The Departed.

wtf you're just jaded
― Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)
No, it's really not good. It's based on a crap novel and I can't stand stupid serial killer superman movies and Hopkins' performance is scenery chewing. Foster is pretty good, but that doesn't save the movie.

I am actually a big fan of Shakespear in Love, though I haven't seen it a few years.
― askance johnson, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)
The first Elizabeth is pretty good too IIRC.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
FWIW, I don't think either of the criminals in Silence of the Lambs is a serial killer superman, at least not like the freaks in the Saw movies or something. Lecter is, after all, in prison for most of the movie, and only escapes because of a confluence of events he couldn't have predicted and Foster overstepping her bounds. And Buffalo Bill, well, gets caught and killed!

love Gosford Park.
― Disco/Very (Roz), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)
I was talking about Lecter and I don't agree that's how the movie portrays him (or his escape) at all.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)
Gosford Park s'okay until Stephen Fry happens.

Vote for the best Oscar-winning pictures of all time.
Do you mean winners or nominees? My pics of the last two decades:

― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:55 (sixteen years ago)
I went back to '81 for you.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)
Alex, I'm not going to derail things, but in terms of plotting, if Catherine Martin hadn't been kidnapped, if Foster hadn't made promises in Sen. Martin's name and if Dr. Whatsisface hadn't forgotten his pen, Lecter would have never escaped. That he capitalized on those three things doesn't, I think, make him Superman.
Now, if he had recommended Catherine as a victim to Buffalo Bill from prison like he did with Will Graham's family in "Manhunter," that might be different.

I'll go back to '80 and say The Elephant Man then!

"That he capitalized on those three things doesn't, I think, make him Superman."
Yeah except how he actually escaped is totally ridiculous.
