"Exxxxxxcellent, we made another 50 billion. Smithers get me some spanish peanuts."

Chris, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pros: he donated 20 billion dollars to third world hunger cons: he kept computer use at a level of mediocrity

you do *know* the numerological values of his name equals 666!!!

bc, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this fucking operating system better work

Queen G the abreviated, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

most of his donations (e.g. software to schools etc) are valued at the price it would cost to buy the software in shops. the actual cost to Microsoft is merely the cost of burning the CDs. and since the recipients weren't able to afford the inflated Microsoft prices in the first place MS aren't losing any money, but gaining large numbers of new customers who will have to pay for upgrades/bug fixes (i.e. new versions of Windows). or am i just being cynical?

michael, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm told that he was one of the best coders in the microcomputer world in the late seventies. And he did pretty much invent the modern software industry.

However, none of this excuses the way his company has been acting for the last ten or fifteen years.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno. Hating him seem s like hating Edison. He made the computerworld a reality. Why attach prometheus?

mike hanle y, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, Gates wasn't really that much of a coder back in the day. Paul Allen did a lot of the gruntwork on MS Basic.

This is still my favorite picture of him... http://www.mugshots.org/misc/bill-gates.jpg

Chris Barrus, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Re BG's college mugshot:

O my Gawd! Just when I thought we'd seen the last of John Denver!

Either that or an ever scarier vision of what Ian Thorpe may look like if he sacked his barber...

BJ, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that's not a college mugshot, it's a police one. i forget what the offence was, probably a driving one

michael, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder if the offence was driving whilst visually inconvenienced on account of his hair being in his eyes?

BJ, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or the fashion police, har har. the shirt is quite cool though, but to say it doesn't match is an understatement

michael, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly I can think of worse people to have as the richest person in the world. But its the richest person in the world bit which makes him wander into the bad guy territory.

You were better before you followed that guy

aside from the usual ad hominem, Gates is just as useless as every other tech bazillionaire. Paul Allen on one end, Sean Parker on the other, top of the curve occupied by a bunch of cis white guys who invented nothing and have solved exactly shit but still get to ramble at Davos every year like we’re supposed to give bushels of fucks

El Tomboto, Thursday, 16 November 2017 04:27 (eight years ago)

Very tip tippity top of that curve is of course Thiel, the useless Lex Luthor to Gates’ useless Reed Richards. Steve Jobs is the useless Hank Pym. I think.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 16 November 2017 04:32 (eight years ago)

Bruce Wayne was always useless so I guess that makes Zuckerberg the Batman.

we can't just trust them to be nice people. Gates effectively took over the US Dept of education and is the most powerful person in Africa policymaking but is accountable to no one. He was elected by no one. His qualification is...he's extremely rich. It's Davos vigilantism.

kind of astonishing that he took up philanthropy to improve his image and managed to cock up so much of it. guess that's neoliberalism for you.

wasdnuos (abanana), Monday, 23 September 2019 19:56 (six years ago)

Eh, I’d say it’s working out pretty well for him. The average person would identify him and Buffett as the good billionaires. Not a bad recovery given his reputation in the ‘90s.

XP Supposedly Covid-19 was started by him, Soros, the Clinton's & Obama's as a way to get everyone vaccinated and/or microchipped, and also to bring down Trump.

I learned this all from the FB account of the "Hot Girl" from my High School days.

bill gates was a utterly ruthless competitor in the early days of personal computing, squashing any and all smaller companies that he could, or absorbing the ones he couldn't, stealing the ideas of others left and right, often using illegal anti-competitive and monopolistic strategies because he knew that his legal teams could keep the issue in the courts so long that it didn't matter if he eventually lost, because he'd amassed so much power he'd won the bigger contest.

more creative and more idealistic companies were driven off the field, leaving gates as the richest man in the world and the emperor of personal and business computing for more than a decade. he was not a benevolent emperor. he crushed opposition.

but all that corona virus shit is just the usual conspiracist paranoia.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 11 May 2020 01:21 (five years ago)

Bill Gates was and remains a dud but it’s unrelated to coronavirus

silby, Monday, 11 May 2020 02:15 (five years ago)

yeah, they should focus their rage on his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Monday, 11 May 2020 02:43 (five years ago)

These stances from Trumpers are amusing because Gates really is the businessman they think Trump is.
