bill gates was a utterly ruthless competitor in the early days of personal computing, squashing any and all smaller companies that he could, or absorbing the ones he couldn't, stealing the ideas of others left and right, often using illegal anti-competitive and monopolistic strategies because he knew that his legal teams could keep the issue in the courts so long that it didn't matter if he eventually lost, because he'd amassed so much power he'd won the bigger contest.

more creative and more idealistic companies were driven off the field, leaving gates as the richest man in the world and the emperor of personal and business computing for more than a decade. he was not a benevolent emperor. he crushed opposition.
