I can scarcely believe it, but I'm anticipating "Paul Blart, Mall Cop"

A little slapstick, a little die hard parody. I think I'm going to like it.

The Way of the Diamond Spirit (Oilyrags), Friday, 9 January 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Filmed at one of my local suburban malls!

It probably helps that I find Segways hilarious. Oh, and that I have no standards.

The Way of the Diamond Spirit (Oilyrags), Friday, 9 January 2009 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

The part in the commercial where he tries to slide behind the map kiosk has actually held up in the 700 repeat viewings I've seen of it, which is scarier on my part, I guess.

ditto:

a rolling on the floor behind the villains on the lookout
b getting dragged behind the old guy's wheelchair
c plowing his segway right into the raffle minivan

destitute man's john candy

garanimal collective (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 9 January 2009 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Surely his untimely death over a decade ago is no reason to stop making John Candy movies?

The Way of the Diamond Spirit (Oilyrags), Friday, 9 January 2009 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

for the record, there is no mall in West Orange, NJ. We'd either go to the Livingston Mall, the Short Hills Mall, or if we were really up for a trip, the Willowbrook Mall.

and this movie has competition, from a Gothamist interview with Aniz Ansari:

In the summer, I filmed a part in "Observe and Report," a new movie about Seth Rogen being a mall cop that should be out in April. I play a lotion stand operator named Kevin that loves Chick-fil-A

Surely his untimely death over a decade ago is no reason to stop making John Candy movies?

That was actually the only overdue benefit of poor John's early demise.

Birth Control to Ginger Tom (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 January 2009 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

27% on Rotten Tomatoes, 3 stars from Ebert lol.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 16 January 2009 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

K James as Paul Blart looks almost exactly like my arch nemesis/most annoying person I've ever met. I can't even watch the commercials.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Friday, 16 January 2009 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

Ebert has his flaws, but he knows good dumb fun when he sees it.

what is the german word for when you laugh at shit in a preview in full embarrassed knowingness that the movie is going to be shit

He demonstrates what fat men have been secretly believed for a long time. Should Daniel Craig someday retire, I am supporting Kevin James for the next James Bond.

the sad thing about this is that Paul Blart's oath is also "detect, deter, observe & report"

Paul Blart II: Maller and Copper

Velma can stay (Oilyrags), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

I like the idea that in 3 months we're going to be buried with half-assed columns and blog posts contrasting 2 dueling mall cop movies like it's Armageddon vs. Deep Impact. little charticles that say things like "Kevin James's mall cop is hypoglycemic, while Seth Rogen's is bi-polar."

some dude, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

"Mall Cop" surely = even Will Ferrell couldn't find anything funny in this job?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'd rather have a Hot Cop movie:

fat guys falling down is the essence of comedy!

Velma can stay (Oilyrags), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

a big part of the reason this movie works though is that Kevin James has this really graceful physicality and isn't just stumbling and bumbling around, though. Ebert kind otm with the Bond comment.

It could be better but as a sweet-natured slapstick for all the family I thought it brung some big lulz.
