The most revolting preacher I have yet encountered. Believes that having sex without requiring commitment of resources (marriage) is wicked, yet that sodomy between people of the opposite sex is not itself perverse. I daresay whores should find his beliefs much to their liking. Oh, but I'm sorry, what are usually called whores at least are cheap enough that money doesn't necessarily guide their reproductive decisions to the extent they aren't led by depravity; what he admires are quite worse.

I don't know, but it's kind of like Christian rock bands being a couple of years behind what actually is "cool" - it's like it takes a while for them to adopt whatever the fashion of the day is and by that time it's passe in the secular world. Hence tons of jesusy ska-punk and nu-metal bands.

Also this, about the author - "Molly Worthen last wrote for the magazine about classical Christian education in Idaho" - made me think it had to be about the kind of crazy church right near me. the other article is interesting though. that college sounded kind of sweet, if uncomfortably anglophile, until i got to this part: "The college handbook forbids students to embrace or promote “doctrinal errors” from the 4th through the 21st centuries, “such as Arianism, Socinianism, Pelagianism, Skepticism, Feminism.” If drawn to such ideas, they must “inform the administration immediately and honestly in a letter offering to withdraw from the College.” Cultural revolution cannot tolerate heretics."

When I first moved to the area and heard people bitching about Doug Wilson, the thing that riled them up the most was about how he apparently didn't really have a problem with slavery. So this bit was kind of hilarious to me: “They voted for Bush; I’d vote for Jefferson Davis,” he chuckles.

that's not quite true

actually, sometimes they beat the mainstream to the punch! there were a lot of christian hardcore/metalcore/emo/whatever bands, for example, that were kicking around the christian circuit well before that stuff broke on MTV.

I don't understand how Calvinism doesn't just encourage absolute nihilism. If my actions and fate are pre-ordained, then nothing I do matters - there is no right and no wrong, because I have no choice to make.

Before the Christian bands broke on MTV?

No, I meant that before hardcore/metalcore/emo/whatever in general became as ubiquitous as it is now a lot of this music was thriving in the Christian circuit.

Not sure if this is how this particular dude views it, but at my church the view was that your salvation/damnation are pre-ordained and that one can make a guess at one's fate in the afterlife by observing one's behavior: if you are a bad person this is probably because you have been pre-destined for hell. If you are a good person it is probably because you have been pre-destined for heaven.
