i don't know what to get my mother! there was one thing she wanted and she went out and bought it HERSELF and said "this is my mother's day present." i'm afraid i'll have to cook or something and that would be a calamity.

Maria, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My mom did the same thing, Maria. I'll just make a really spiffy card like I do every year.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

give her a kiss and a hug

Chupa-Cabras, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Happy Mother's Day to any and all mothers (of both kinds) who are reading this.

I was reading t'other day how Mother's Day has its origin in two unrelated traditions. One started in the UK and was when the aristocracy allowed women in service one day off a year (how generous!) to go home & visit their mothers. This day was Mothering Sunday and was two Sundays before Easter. The other, Mother's Day started in the US in the second decade of the 20th century. Of course during the 20th century the no. of ppl employing servants fell dramatically and so the Uk tradition would've died out if it wasn't for US influence. Father's Day followed as a purely commercial invention in the 70s and then Grandparents Day in the 90s. What next? Uncles and Aunts Day? Was I alone in asking when I was a child, "Why isn't there a childrens' day?" only to get the response from my mother, "*Every* day is childrens' day!" The implication, that children have it easy all the time and that evry day is wonderful for them, is somewhat sickening.

MarkH, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

True though.

No, you're not alone. Though in some terrible existentialist sense, you might be.

In Japan there's Boys Day and Girls Day, if you are 3,5, &7.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I love my mom and wish I could get her something, but I can't. : (

hstencil, Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in the same position -- broke as a bag of things that are broke -- but am sending a card (it will arrive late) and dedicating a book (which will not be published before Mother's Day; actually, it isn't definite yet, so I should hush on that). My mother is, for a billion reasons, the reason I'm a writer, even though she's never understood why I would want to do so for a living. (She will still appreciate the dedication, though, even though there's a lot of swearing and people being rude and stuff.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My cards have been sent!

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought my cheapish gift a few weeks ago. Mom, if you're reading this, don't click that link till Sunday.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 8 May 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Mom, if you're reading this, don't click any link ever, and also, I didn't write any of those things with my name at the bottom.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 8 May 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm making my mom another mix cd of tracks I have in my collection that she's never heard of but might actually like. Last time, her favorite song was by Magnetic Fields.

Also, we're going to Bush Gardens for the day.

Not much changes in three years except in this case it was the Episode III soundtrack. She loved it. :-) Happy Mom's Day to all the ILXor mums!

Anyone ever see that footage of elephants, where the matriach of the herd has a baby who can't stand up properly and walks on its knees? Baby tirelessly tries to stand and stretch out those muscles, but after a day or so the herd has to move on and find food elsewhere. Mom will not leave her bab, and Sister is torn between leaving and staying, eventually deciding on the latter. The mom and sister take a few steps, then look back at Baby as it makes it slow, painful steps on its knees. Repeat for many miles. But YAY! Baby eventually is able to stand and walk properly --- those muscles just needed a few days to stretch out, as Baby was too big to stretch them in the womb.
I watched this with my homies, and I think we were all struggling to not cry.

In Japan there's Boys Day and Girls Day, if you are 3,5, &7.

There's also kodomo no hi (children's day), I think.

Today is my first mommy's day. It's very weird. I mean, of course we don't really celebrate it, but it is officially my first mother's day. :-)
