Spanos is, has always been and will remain a nasty piece of work (San Diego is more or less my hometown, don't question me). I agree that both he and the team leaving is a classic case of the baby and bathwater going out together, but I almost think it's worth it just to be rid of him. As it is, my nostalgic affections for the Chargers and Padres more or less died when they started calling it Qualcomm Stadium. PLEASE.

At last! I'm not alone in this world! After '89, I make allowances for "Vogue," "The Rain" and maybe "Ray of Light" only.

"Vogue" was pop crap....a definite example of video packaging. Besides, it was in the same league as the Macarena. Bet you would never admit dancing to it.
Can't oblige you there, but I've my own wrath to shed;>
Ain't a (American) football gal, but what the hell is that??? L.A. doesn't have enough room for a parking lot, much less an entire stadium! Sports history is littered with stories of teams that changed location, then dropped off the face of the earth.

wonder how long before the rams and chargers both move again

this is admittedly from my position as a guy who's not really as much into the NFL these past couple years, but as someone living in L.A. if you weren't paying reasonably close attention you'd never know the rams played here this past season.

I only follow the concussions but this sure seems like the actions of an enterprise that has lost the plot a little bit

if corporate luxury boxes sales dip for either the rams or chargers they’re fucked. nobody wants to spend $500 to watch a garbage ass team.

Spanos could have stayed in San Diego. His family’s worth is placed north of $2 billion. The NFL offered him $300 million toward a new stadium in San Diego. He’s now going to pay a $650 million relocation fee. He is not staying because the Los Angeles Chargers will be worth more to a potential buyer than the San Diego Chargers ever will.
poor sad dean. 'i had no choice'

Now LA will have two NFL teams that no one cares about.
― earlnash, Thursday, 12 January 2017 18:01 (nine years ago)
Why didn't the NFL just buy the team like what the NBA did with the Pelicans?
― Mr. Snrub, Friday, 13 January 2017 00:33 (nine years ago)
Don't think it is because the Chargers itself are losing money, I think it is a move to make more money. Probably a similar deal to what happened with the Browns where the owner's personal finances are a mess and even though the club is profitable, it's more profitable to move.
This seems like a fairly hair brained idea moving without a stadium deal done and one that could end up an even bigger mess. I'm figuring Spanos is trying to force the NFL to get help get him a stadium deal.
I think the deal with the Pelicans is no one wanted the club and the NBA clubs had to basically buy it out or get rid of the franchise, not unlike what happened with the Expos in baseball.

this is going well
LOS ANGELES -- The Chargers' first public presentation in their new city didn't go over so well Saturday.During their game with the Lakers, the Clippers showed the new Los Angeles Chargers logo on the video screen and the Staples Center crowd promptly booed. After a few seconds, the screen cut to Chargers tight end Jeff Cumberland, who briefly waved but then was booed.

Simply moving the franchise to LA increases the chargers valuation by a billion dollars because of market size (but they have to pay the other owners a $550m relocation fee...
