Arranged marriages involving under-age girls are not uncommon in the rural farming community, police say.
Both men, who are from Mexico and apparently do not realise they have done anything wrong, now face the possibility of being deported as illegal immigrants, according to the local sheriff.
Police chief Joe Grebmeier said the case has brought mixed reaction.
"Some portions of the community are outraged, including the Mexican community," he said. "Some portions feel: What’s the issue?"
"I’m trying to be culturally sensitive but I also took an oath to enforce our law," the police chief said. "We have to send a message to the entire community this behaviour is illegal."
