Umbrellas (cont)

I find black umbrellas being used or carried by either gender dead boooooring, but especially irritating being carried by female yuppettes (when rain is unlikely any time before Christmas) in Collins St or Chapel St in Melbourne (or anywhere in Sydney) as part of their 'corporate image' to show their boss they're every bit as boring and anal retentive and conformist as their male colleagues. I have carried and used red or blue umbrellas ever since I bought a ladies size brolly to take OS not wanting to lug the golf brolly all over UK (down they're a pain in the butt for the poor sod who has to cart it about, up they're a bigger nuisance for everyone else) or use the black one because it reminded me too much of work.

Colored brollies are so much more cheerful.

What do others think?

a big black folded umbrella is stylish, a bit mod, rather dangerous looking... you could poke someone's eye out with one of those. i think it should be the next gangsta accessory, sort of like a dual (duel?) purpose pimp's walking stick.

i don't like colourful umbrellas or the small explosive ones. yuck, ken done prints and shuffly old lady tartan. they are hard to coordinate with your outfit too. some kind of colourful stripe like those suburban canvas blinds would be pretty swish though.

I go more for the solid colors, red, blue, green, I like some geometric designs (strong lines), but tartan's been overdone, Ken Done I agree totally, florals look too insipid and Laura Ashley, leopard print on anything but a leopard makes me heave...

I like either black ones or pretty printed ones, but not plain colored ones. Plain colored ones are ugly, somehow.

I have had a few of those Shelta umbrellas from the late 70s/early 80s (the ones that fold down into a mushroom shape) and it seems to me that they have a better, smoother shape when they're up, and the colors are brighter and more 'full'. The one I am using now is still bright red and it must be over 20 years old but the color still seems deeper than on a new umbrella.

It could be the all-over-the-place shape those 'exploding' umbrellas open into that makes them seem ugly, as well as the cheap dye. Also umbrellas today are made to last five minutes.

three years pass...
Well, that's OK, cause I tend to lose them in four.
