You are kicked out of your apartment...

So I'm sitting here waiting nervously to find out if I can get a truck to move my junk from here to St. Paul, MN. My rental agency completely flaked out, they are a bunch of fucking cockfarmers. I have to be out by noon tomorrow. So in one of my idle moments, most of which have been full of anxious slow-simmering panic, I thought: if they kicked me out, starting tossing my junk out on the sidewalk or whatever, what would I try to grab to make sure it was safe, wasn't stolen by passerby on the sidewalk, etc.? (Of course, I would be forced in actuality to sit on the sidewalk with my junk and then never leave because I wouldn't be able to get to a phone to get someone to watch it.) So, thus, I put the question to you: what would you save? Note subtle difference from similar burning-house question, because you have a chance, I guess, that a lot of your other junk would be OK somehow, if in danger of theft/hailstorm/driveby/etc.

My pictures, my clothes, my hair stuff, my makeup, my Manics albums, my walkman.

Josh, don't give yourself hysteria. They won't touch your stuff.

Check in when you get to St. Paul! Might be able to point you in the direction of cool places and fun things but I have bad news: many of them are in Mpls.

Yea! Our cataloging and accounting system is down this afternoon, all of my busywork is done, which means it's Fuck Around on the Internet Day!

If this happened to me, I'd run immediately to the corner and hitch up my skirt and thrust my leg out toward traffic so that I could earn the thousands of $$$ I would need to buy everything back. Because I don't have it in the bank. My arms would be full with my two cats, and I would have to take my bike, since it's my transportation, but all of those CDs, my computer, my two stereos...I would have to risk losing them.

Something like this happened to my sister, whose ex-roommate was something out of "Single White Female", and yes, she got her through a roommate service. When my sister moved in with this witch, she was told to have her rent in "by the first" or be penalized. So, she turned in her rent on the first, *at night*, and her roommate said, "I'm sorry, you can't live here if you can't pay your rent on time." My sister said, "this is bullshit", went in her room and slammed the door.

The next day, my sister came home to find the cops waiting for her so that they could charge her with "assault" and serve a restraining order against her. This bitch lied just so she could get rid of my sister. So after she was bailed out, she had less than an hour to gather her things and find a place to live. Over the next couple of weeks, my sister fought with the cops trying to arrange a visit so that she could pick up the rest of her stuff. Eventually, a lot of it was stolen: jewelry, CDs, some electronics. As it turned out, when my sister moved in, this roommate tried to sell her a whole bunch of the *old* roommate's stuff at inflated prices. So she had this little racket going, and she dropped the charges when it became clear that we had it all figured out. But my sister lost so much money from it *and* a job, because she had to move back home which was far from her job.

"Only" your music collection, or clothes? Heh. See, I didn't quite mean that. I don't think Ally could take her clothes. (I could: except for winter buttondowns I fit all my current clothing into a small shoulder bag.) Like, more carryable stuff, please. For instance I could cram about 150 CDs into my carrying cases, but carrying more than a box or two of CDs (out of the four million fucking boxes that seem to be here) would be prohibitive. So the spirit of the question is kind of a desert-island thing. Like, obviously I would grab some books - but which? Sorry, Kant. Dumpster for you.

(oh, and suzy - it's all close enough together anyway. I am working/studying in mpls - my castle is in St. Paul.)

I of course will wait to answer this question until I see if I have any practical experience to draw on.

My art ( a huge amount) pictures and our marriage certificate.

I could to take my clothes, it'd be very easy. They're all small and easy to shove into my duffel bag. I regularly do it when I go away for a weekend, ask anyone. You open my bag and I have about 40 different outfits for 2 days worth of vacation. The one time I DIDN'T do that I ended up dressing like a damned hippie and not having my hairdryer cos I assumed EVERYONE has a hairdryer and they didn't, so I was like a fucking hippie with my wet hair. Argh, it was the worst experience of my life. I could easily pack every item of clothing that I truly like, which is like about 100 things, plus shoes and all my underwear, because I regularly do. My makeup amounts to Stila Ebony eyeshadow and an eyeliner brush (I'm against pencil), mascara, eyebrow pencil, one single blusher, chapstick, and foundation that I use to cover spots. It fits into a tiny bag. My hair stuff is a tube of shampoo, a tube of conditioner, and a few tiny hair balms and thickeners.

In fact, the only thing different from what I claimed I'd take with me in this weird circumstance is the Manics albums - I generally only take two or three on vacation, not ALL of them. Otherwise, this is ALL stuff I regularly "toss" into my bag and bring with me everywhere. It might very well be disturbing but it is the truth :)

I don't know if this is because I'm just plain lazy or just not very attached to my possesions, but I can't think of a single thing I would take. My computer is too big to carry, so feh to everything else. I find the idea of starting anew and leaving all of the old baggage behind exciting in a way.

Josh, hopefully you've been able to find a moving truck by now?

Nicole, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my music, my books, my coputer, my antidepressants and ventolin, my carton of camels and my copy of hard core logo.

Geoff, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

According to his handy-dandy website, Mr. Kortbein is safe & sound in St. Paul. Raucous.

What would I save? Ah, probably nothing. I chalk up this apathy to my general state of apathy, mind you. And I know that if I had to choose various CDs over others, I'd regret it terribly.

Amendment: I'd save some books. And my many journals. And my PC, naturally. And clothes that actually fit me. (Where's my mumu?)

David Raposa, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, I actually did not find a truck. My roommate drove down in his jeep, and we moved two jeep-loads of things into my office (which I thankfully still have the keys for), and then drove the third load up to the Cities, arriving at about 6 AM. We'll go back for the rest this weekend.

To answer the question: I don't know why I would, but I would take my Powerbook. It's old and slow and most of the important things I need on a computer are actually on machines out on the internet, so I guess it would just be for comfort. Past that, I would've taken just my shoulder bag full of clothing, and my backpack which had my CD player, some CDs, and two books: Gravity's Rainbow and Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project. I don't really know why I'd pick just this stuff, because I own other things I would miss a lot. But I agree with Nicole - the possibility of starting over is exciting. Did I really fucking need to bring those three Dickens novels up here? I don't even fucking like Dickens. etc.
