Amusement Parks: Classic or Dud?

Yesterday Joei and I spent most of the day at Six Flags New England with some college friends. (The new Batman coaster is LOVELY.) I have been in love with amusement parks for as loga s I can remember; in fact, when I was 5 and asked the question, "What do you want to be when yougrow up?" my first answer was "A roller coster operator!" On top of that, the food is unhealthy and wonderful (mmm KETTLECORN).

How do you feel about amusment parks? Do you love them or hate them? What are your favorite rides? Are you a "screamer" or a "laugher"?

dan!!

ethan, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never been much of a rollercoaster person. I always feel like I'm going to be thrown off.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Feeling like you're going to fly off the tracks = CLASSIC!!

Ethan: Heh.

Dan Perry, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love them, especially the white knuckle rides, and winning a cuddly toy when you have a woman with you is great too.

Martin Skidmore, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about winning a woman when you have a cuddly toy with you?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Back in '75, when I was four, I tagged along with my brothers on their tenth and eighth bithdays at Adventureland, and I had to suffer the indignity of not being tall enough for any of the cool rides.

When I was finally tall enough for those same rides, I wanted nothing to do with them. They were scary. I couldn't even handle the micro rollercoaster, so I settled on all the kiddie rides which were utterly beneath me.

I went to an amusement park in Rome, Italy as part of my European Teen Tour from Hell and the only thing truly notable about that was that several girls were goosed and robbed by employees in the obligatory haunted house ride.

There were also a couple of trips to Disneyworld/EPCOT, but I'm not sure they count.

Michael Daddino, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

now here's the critical question: what about eurodisney?

geeta, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Geeta: One answer: clone. OK, three: It can't compete;>

Wahey! I adore amusement parks, _especially_ the rollercoasters. Nothing like flying along in a seat at 100 mph, with only a strap holding you in (or in the case of the "Batman" ride, straps....but no floor).

Best rides ever? The water raft rides in the height of Summer: you get totally wet and splashy......

*ahem* I'll grow up now, yo.

Nichole Graham, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

im obsessed with disneyland. i go there by myself alot more than anyone should. in fact i dont like going with other people anymore. i take my work there sometimes.

chaki, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I found love,so don't hide it Life is a rollercoaster, just gotta ride it I need you,so stop hiding Our love is a mystery Girl, lets get beside it

Chupa-Cabras, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about winning a woman when you have a cuddly toy with you?

I'm afraid, Ned, that I've missed out on the stalls offering women as prizes. I'm clearly going to the wrong amusement parks. Do you have to have a cuddly toy with you to play?

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The best amusement park EVAH.

Colin Meeder, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thread devoted to Ned's cuddly toy?

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, like you didn't know I was going to do that!

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I DID NOT KNOW. Now I'm going to slump in a corner and cry for the rest of the day.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never heard that euphemism before...

This thread has gone off-topic in the worst way. Someone tell me about a park I need to go visit. I'm trying to get to Cedar Point this summer because I absolutely MUST ride Millenium Force.

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never heard that euphemism before...

And never shall again, for you imagined it, you 'orrible man. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's bring the thread back on track! Amusement parks = awesome! In the Virginia area we have Kings Dominion (great coasters) and Busch Gardens (good coasters, cool atmosphere) and I have a hard time deciding which is better.

Vinnie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We also have a Six Flags up in Maryland that I've never been to that has some variety of Batman coaster. I need to go there sometime.

Vinnie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

About 30 min. from here we have the original Six Flags Over Texas (I don't understand why they keep the same name in other states. . .) which every kid loved growing up. I haven't been since a HS senior class trip. We keep saying we're going to go but haven't yet b/c A. tickets are nearly 40 bucks B. it's too goddamned hot and C. the lines are too long.

I'm sure we'd have fun if we did though. I'd like to do some 'shrooms and then go.

S., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

King's Dominion is EXCELLENT! I was really disappointed the year we went, though, because Volcano was being serviced. *sigh*

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan, Volcano is the best ride in the park! :( I'm glad you still liked it though. I usually go with my friends twice a summer at least.

Vinnie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ADVENTURE LAND LOOKS FUN

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 8 September 2002 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad (all my dad anecdotes go like this) took us to Knott's while on vacation, grudgingly and we did montezooma's revenge......i was insane to ask him to do anything remotely fun......afterwards, he was clutching his heart and walking aimlessly, cursing loudly, and when I asked if he was alright he just glared at me and went "fucking bullshit....fucking shit"........well anyways, amusement parks are my favorite thing ever, they get my nipples hard......the scent of churros is inextricably linked with the scent of pussy for me, and the two scents are in abundance and grips at fairs and parks.......I always end up almost getting into a fight with some vato kid but it's a price I'll pay......knuckleheads everywhere, I just soak it in.......thugmonkeys being soft for a day, nerds being loud, it's all there......amusement parks mean this much to me: if i became president, I'd just send out an urgent national alert that every kid on earth should have his first kiss with cotton candy or slurpee breath at sundown at the mini-golf, because that's the only damn way to do it, and little buddy, the shithead that's extorting GameBoy advance gear from you will get his just desserts because he has no life skills, and then I'd blow up myself and the white house, because the world thereupon be problem free and self-governing.

Bitch.

Ramosi, Sunday, 8 September 2002 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, that's a rhetorical Bitch......now why would I call Perry a bitch? So damn you for thinking the worst of people if that's what you were thinking.

Bitch.

Ramosi, Sunday, 8 September 2002 06:01 (twenty-three years ago)

You like that sweet knuckling of blood and honey between womens' legs, don't ye?

david h (david h), Sunday, 8 September 2002 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Howiiiiiiieeeeeeeee.........how goes it you gerbil dynamo, it has been a long time.......i always liked you......you and gareth have the best attitudes, and i'd trust you with my playstation......oh hey, have you been walking your ferret regularly? Don't get lazy on me young man!

Ramosi, Sunday, 8 September 2002 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Cedar Point is fantastic - if you're a coaster buff, you must go. I haven't been there since they put up the new one, but I rode the Magnum there. I just went to Great America last week - they have this terrifying (in a good way) thing called "Vertical Velocity", where you shoot straight up, 90 degrees up this track, and it stops at the top. Then we looked up at it from the ground and saw that the track was swaying in the wind. I'm sure it has to, for some reasons of physics that I'm not aware of, but it looked scary.

Kerryx, Sunday, 8 September 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Next time we go to visit the folks in OH, we're going to both King's Island and Cedar Point. I remember a choir trip in high school that ended at Great America... SO MUCH FUN!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 September 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Hold on there's an amusement park ride called Montezuma's Revenge?! Please tell me it's not some sort of log flume.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Scary story--a friend of mine used to work at an amusement park, buckling people into the roller coaster. The roller coaster operator had a seizure, and my friend didn't know how to turn off the ride, so the people in the roller coaster just kept going, and going, and going...they went through the ride like ten times, or something.

Because of my friend's lack of roller coaster operation skills, it's now law in the U.S. that all amusement park employees have to be trained in emergency ride shut-off procedures.

But I still love roller coasters anyway.

nory (nory), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

(Montezuma's Revenge is a roller coaster, Tim. Alas.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

EuroDisney has an Aerosmith rollercoaster. I've thought about this but can't figure out why. No, I have not been. No, I will not go....though I would like to ride the mechanical bull they've got in the Disney village.

Our local amusment park is so old and rickety that there is kind of a thrilling element of danger involved.

I prefer the decrepit amusement parks. I wish I went to Sanrio Puroland.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I love amusement parks. Hopefully I'm going to Alt0n T0wers on Sat, woo hoo!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't been on the AIR ride yet at Alton Towers, anyone know if it's any good?

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

roller coasters are brilliant. really scary incredibly fast ones also cure hangovers.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well if the fact that I had my eyes closed, only opening them once to see nothing but sky & screaming loads, then yes, the Air ride is great!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Behold SoCal's forthcoming rides. For me, it's all about drawings like this:
