Lawro Sans Tache

Mark Lawrenson has shaved off his moustache because Bolton were not relegated.

Does he look better or worse? Should he regrow it or not?

the pinefox, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

right after he shaved it off he sez-'not to worry, it'll grow back in 5 or 6 days'...neeearggh..

michael bourke, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Frankly whatever Thatch looks like, he still looks like a binman.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish they'd shaved Ray Stubbs' head off instead.

Andrew L, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The extraordinary thing is about this is that Lawro does not appeared to have been defined by his 'tache. Without it, he's still recognisably Lawro. It's the hair that fixes him forever in the early 80s.

Michael Jones, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To be fair I think it was only his hair to be shaved off.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I found it extraordinary. It's like your eye 'fills in' the moustache even though it isn't there. This could be to do with a big nose shadow.

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Co-worker Mike has turned up to work today with half of his left eyebrow missing because it was shaved off in a drunken haze on Friday night HA HA wot a nonce.

Jonnie Daniels' chest to thread!

>>> "Lawro does not appeared to have been defined by his 'tache. Without it, he's still recognisably Lawro."

Hm - I'm wary of disagreeing with an undoubted expert here - but... I think he looks very different without it. He looks somewhat like late George Harrison (say, post-1985).

He also looks, strange to say, more *serious*. It's as though Lawro sans tache is a real person, and Lawro with tache was a comedy figure all along - a cartoon pundit. (And a cartoon defender? Over to you, Mike...)

the pinefox, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course he looks better. There is nobody with a moustache who doesn't look better without one. The closest to an exception is when Maggi Hambling wears her fake one.

The tragedy is that he indeed still looks like an early '80s Liverpool footballer. Perhaps he'll bet his haircut against WBA or Birmingham staying up next season. Then again, that would be pretty safe.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's wrong with Lawro's haircut?

(Perhaps someone should post a picture to aid discussion.)

the pinefox, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite like Lauro, for all his fashion faux pas. The only one who really annoys is me is Clive "they're not going to do it are they Ron" Tyldsley. That's all rooted in my dislike for Man U though.

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lawro's fine on football focus but his limitations are exploited when he's co-analyst with the majestic Hansen.

Clive Tyldesley is annoying when commentating on Man Utd but bearable enough on other occasions I find. He's certainly far better than the other ITV commentating twunt who did the play off game yesterday.

Jonnie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Having read dangerhere.com I've really come to relish watching matches where Big Ron is commentating. He doesn't come out with Ronglish all THAT often but when he does it's always worth it "you need solid citizens at this level for the 90 minutes".

George Hamilton over here is more annoying than amusing in his mistakes but there's a certain pleasure to be had in hearing him actually lose the plot as a fellow Irishman as he did when we beat Italy and more recently, Holland.

, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In the play-off final yesterday Ron said 'I just think that the more Norwich give the ball away the more likely Birmingham are to score'.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only finally saw Mark L. for the first time the other day with the FA Cup final broadcast. Seems sorta sedate.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes he looks very down in the mouth. I wonder how happy his life is.

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing can ever compensate for playing, the dressing room banter, the practical jokes. He's probably missing that ;)

Jonnie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

where?

richard john gillanders, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
He never regrew it.

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is he married? Maybe his wife prefers him without it.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I always assumed he wasn't from the way he talked about some of the young players, but what do I know.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

N, i think you are confusing the real lawro with alistair mcgowan's "hilarious" skits...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

But McGowan doesn't play up that aspect, does he? - his Lawro is lugubrious but not lubricious.

the pinefox, Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Carsmile I don't think I am. I don't really watch that programme.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
It's now hard to remember what he looked like avec tache!

the pinefox, Saturday, 26 November 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

There is nobody with a moustache who doesn't look better without one.

Is this true?

the bellefox, Saturday, 26 November 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
It just struck me. He shouldn't have shaved it off. Or, if he had to, he should have grown it back. Really, he's not been the same without it.

That which is not slightly distorted lacks sensible appeal; from which it follows that irregularity – that is to say, the unexpected, surprise and astonishment, are a essential part and characteristic of beauty.
