no potioned-up Asterix :(

but if Vader could trumph in round 1 he's gonna have no problem with any of THESE guys

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2009 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

Potter would win, he's flukey bugger.

jel --, Sunday, 18 January 2009 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

how big is Ms Pac-Man supposed to be? were there any humans in that terrible Pacman cartoon?

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2009 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

I went down the list and was actually going to rep for Lex, I figure he could definitely wipe out all these kids, but James Bond is built to ruin a dude like Luthor - LL would turn all the others on the list against each other, wiping out the bracket, but 007 would suss out his scheme and wind up kicking him off a mountainside or something

TOMBOT, Sunday, 18 January 2009 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

Ms Pac-Man could be like the size of a planet compared to the rest of them

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2009 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

If Batman can figure out a way to kill everyone in the Justice League, I think Sherlock Holmes or Lex Luthor could figure out a way to kill Darth Vader. I'll go with Lex Luthor because he's more technological.

fwiw (rockapads), Sunday, 18 January 2009 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

As long as Omar keeps feeding Sherlock drugs, those two can probably take care of the rest. When it's down to two, coin flip.

Ninja turtles all the way down.

ledge, Sunday, 18 January 2009 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

Holmes is not a killer. He'd just be walking up to bodies as they perish with magnifying glass going "ah yes, notice the slash marks - clearly the work of that disfigured chap in the hat"

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2009 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

xposts. Omar would never feed Sherlock drugs, a man's got to have a code!

Was tempted to go with Omar, but since he can be killed by a child he's shown himself as quite vunerable. John McClane has destroyed both a helicopter and a plane, in addition to having his back watched by Sergeant Al Powell in case anyone tries to pull a sneaky on him. So McClane.

Ripley from "Alien" or super-Ripley from "Alien: Resurrection"?

kate78, Sunday, 18 January 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

I think it would come down to Robocop vs. Luthor. I don't think Jedi mind tricks would work on either one of them, and they've got the hardware to fuck everybody else up. Luthor's quicker-thinking and quicker on his feet, so I'll vote for him.

Not trying to hate, s1ocki. A fine list it is. Perhaps anthropomorphic status is one of your criteria?

Pillboxxx/The Lol Belol (Pillbox), Sunday, 18 January 2009 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

Vader basically has more brute force (or brute Force) than any of the others here, but he never seemed super-smart or anything, so I'd say he can only be won by wits and cunning. Out of these characters I'd say only Luthor and Holmes are cunning enough to win Vader, but besides his wits Luthor also has the advantage of his technology. Also, Holmes mostly used his wits to solve mysteries and not to fight supernaturally powerful enemies, whereas Luthor has done that countless times. So I call Luthor.

Tuomas, Sunday, 18 January 2009 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

Vader takes it again.

If Vader was disallowed, there'd be some real room for discussion IMO.

YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS (dan m), Sunday, 18 January 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

Luthor's a tough, smart guy but hubris always gets the better of him. You always gotta go with the smart, humble guys who know how to lay in the cut and let the egomaniacs play themselves out. So I'm sayin' dudes like Omar and Holmes, and for that matter James Bond, Indiana Jones and Buckaroo Banzai are going to get their asses kicked a little bit by the villains, but have the respect of less experienced and self confident heroes like Spiderman, Ninja Turtles and Harry Potter.

Vader is made like Cheese - he'd end up bitching to Palpatine like "Shit was unseemly!" making excuses for not having his shit together.

Tony Soprano is the odd man out here - the hubristic, ruthless asshole who can actually win, but that's largely because he never tangles with a genuinely good person, it's all other mafiosi and corrupt FBI dudes. McClane would shoot him through a plate glass window and into a cement mixer or something if they faced off, and McClane is just a guy with fucked up luck - he's always in the wrong place at the wrong time and gets his ass kicked to just this side of dead, but also always manages to (barely) do his part to save the day.

why do you all think darth vader is invincible when a straight-up girl like luke skywalker was his downfall? i know he looks cool and all but there are really serious emotional issues and failings that vader has that no one seems to properly consider -- i mean, for example, raphael the ninja turtle only has one emotional weakness, pizza, versus this lifetime movie landmine that is vader's psyche.

On the other hand, without a physical body he's pretty hard to kill. (Maybe Potter could do that with magic?) I think Krueger doesn't really belong here, since he's on a different level than the rest of these people. There should be a special round for incorporeal characters only.

Tuomas, Monday, 19 January 2009 08:03 (seventeen years ago)

Dr Manhattan would pwn all these superheroes.

NotEnough, Monday, 19 January 2009 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

I don't want to go with another Vader shoe-in but goddamn it is difficult to see how any of this bunch would take him down (although I do think there has been some serious hyperbole regarding Vader's abilities). Discounting the obvious joke choices, the contenders, aside from Vader, can be boiled down to:

Robocop
John Mcclane
Ellen Ripley
Spiderman
Lex Luthor
Omar Little
James Bond

with maybe Harry Potter as a wildcard (I really have no idea what he is capable of).

Mcclane, Ripley and Omar all have exceptional levels of survivability particularly against hopeless odds. Omar in particular has strengths as a tactician, but all can operate effectively at the tactical level. Ripley would not do anything stupid and would have no qualms in using the maximum available force to take Vader (or anyone else) down. Mcclane would take a shitload of killing. If they worked together I could see them going far if not all the way, simply because they all have smarts.

Robocop and Lex Luthor obviously have decent shots, although again I think Lex Luthor's wits and technological resources are going to be the deciding factor. A guy who regularly goes up against Superman has to be worth a punt.

Spiderman: I've never been a fan really, so might be prejudiced, but I don't think he has that killer instinct. Robocop would do him no problem.

James Bond: despite his gadgets, I think he'd come up short against Luthor.

Out of the rest:
Sherlock Holmes is not a fighter. Deckard is a non-entity who lacks control over his own fate. Indiana Jones doesn't have enough in his arsenal. The rest I don't know enough about or are pretty obvious losers in this scenario.

ears are wounds, Monday, 19 January 2009 11:08 (seventeen years ago)

So in the end I see a Ripley victory. Bond does Robocop with his gadgetry and heads off in pursuit of Lex Luthor. Luthor is holed up in his orbital space station, having defeated Spidey without too many problems. Vader turns up in a Super Star Destroyer and tries to take over the base = many dead Stormtroopers and temporary draw between Vader and Luthor. Bond uses some of his moonraker moves to get on board as well.

Meanwhile Mcclane, Omar and Ripley are also on board (for reasons that are unclear but probably to do with inter-dimensional portals created by Luthor's experiments). Mcclane was in pursuit of Omar when they were transported on board but they decide to put their differences aside for now. They run into Ripley and all decide to wait, observe and come up with a plan of action.

In the end they lure Vader into an airlock. Omar gets unexpectedly punked by a Stormtrooper. Mcclane gets choked by Vader, but manages to hold out for longer than any other human and while Vader is distracted, Ripley blasts him out into space.

Meanwhile Bond has avoided all Luthor's traps and tricks and meets hims for a final showdown in the station's control room. They beat on each other for a while, until the control room is wrecked. While this is going on Ripley sneaks into the room and sets off the auto-destruct, before legging it back to Bond's shuttle. She touches down in the Atlantic, whilst Luthor's space station breaks up in the atmosphere taking Luthor, Bond and all the other remaining characters with it.

Altered Beast will pwn everyone. If anyone does get to the Beast, it can just RISE FROM ITS GRAVE until the job is done.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Monday, 19 January 2009 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

in my head i'm imagining it as a cage match.

Nah this is a Royal Rumble and short unstable alliances are a key factor.

It would take Holmes and Luthor all of 10 seconds to work out that Vader needs to be taken out early and that all you need to do is knock his hat off when he's distracted. Spiderman and Raph would keep Vader busy long enough for a nutcase like McClane or Tyson to jump on his back and rip his helmet off.

i think you guys are seriously underestimating holmes. he almost took out captain picard a couple times, just to start with.

Use of weapons and martial arts

On occasion Holmes and Watson carry pistols with them; however, these weapons are only used on seven occasions.

1. In The Sign of the Four, they both fire at the Andaman Islander.
2. In The Hound of the Baskervilles, both Holmes and Watson fire at, and between them manage to kill, the hound.
3. In The Adventure of the Copper Beeches, Watson fires at and kills the mastiff.
4. In The Adventure of the Empty House, Watson pistol-whips Colonel Sebastian Moran.
5. In The Adventure of the Three Garridebs, Holmes pistol-whips Killer Evans after Watson is shot.
6. In The Musgrave Ritual, it is revealed that Holmes decorated the wall of their flat with a patriotic "V.R." (Victoria Regina) done in bullet marks.
7. In The Problem of Thor Bridge, Holmes uses Watson's revolver in a reconstruction of the crime.

Holmes brandishing a weapon.

In four stories Holmes has a pistol but does not fire it: The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet, The Adventure of the Final Problem, The Adventure of the Dancing Men, The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist.

Besides a pistol, Holmes twice uses a riding crop/cane as a weapon. In "The Red-Headed League," he uses it to knock the pistol from John Clay's hand, and in "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" he uses it to lash out at the snake. In "A Case of Identity," Holmes comes close to thrashing Windibank the swindler with a riding crop. In A Study in Scarlet, Watson remarks on how Holmes is a expert in fighting with a singlestick and a sword-yet in none of the Doyle literature on Holmes is Holmes directly portrayed using either weapon.[6] Holmes does employ a singlestick to defend himself in "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client"; however, this occurs while Watson is not present, and the reader only learns of it after the fact.

Holmes is also reckoned a formidable fist-fighter, though his prowess is only reported second-hand. In The Sign of the Four, Holmes introduces himself to the prize-fighter McMurdo as "the amateur who fought three rounds with you at Alison's rooms on the night of your benefit four years back." McMurdo responds by saying, "Ah, you're one that has wasted your gifts, you have! You might have aimed high, if you had joined the fancy." In The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist, Holmes gets the better of Woodley with a straight left; in "The Adventure of the Empty House," Holmes remarks how a criminal named Matthews had knocked out Holmes's left canine tooth at Charing Cross Station.

In "The Adventure of the Empty House," Holmes recounts to Watson how he used martial arts to overcome Professor Moriarty and fling his adversary to his death at the Reichenbach Falls. He states: "I have some knowledge, however, of baritsu, or the Japanese system of wrestling, which has more than once been very useful to me."

"Baritsu" was a drafting error on the author's part who meant to refer to the real martial art of Bartitsu. Despite this, for a while at least, it still acquired some notoriety all of its own.

Since Freddie Kreuger has no corporeal body (as noted upthread) he can only be killed in dreams. Therefore, whoever wins the melee will have to eventually fall asleep, at which point Freddie pounces for a one-on-one. Then again, does Ms Pac-Man actually sleep? We could end up with a stalemate here. My vote's for Fred anyway.

Matt #2, Monday, 19 January 2009 20:25 (seventeen years ago)

In The Speckled Band, *spoiler* Holmes kinda kills as well, as he misdirects the snake to kill the dude and doesn't think twice about it.

I'm still not sure who to vote for. Early thoughts make me think Omar though.

Darth Vader - is supreme badass, but is troo villain, therefore loses in the end
Robocop - has bullets plus is bulletproof, moderately clever: no biscuit
Sherlock Holmes - super genius but minimal fite skills, prone to dying: long shot
John Mcclane - puny, but with Batmanlike powers of overcoming long odds
Deckard - beaten to a romantically mournful pulp
E.T. - is chilren's hero, thus cannot be harmed, but can't really win either: disqualified
Ellen Ripley - hero-type, but low-level and only good against bugs
Spiderman - legit badass, could probably take most other protags on list
Raphael - aced by Spidey for comedy purposes
John Glenn - smeared round 1
Freddie Krueger - a villian, so should be out of the running, but has crazy powers, is funny and seems unkillable: dark horse
Mike Tyson - this is not a raping contest
Ms Pac-Man - only interested in dots, fruits and ghosts
Buckaroo Banzai - comedy hero, second-string
Lex Luthor - like Freddie + Vader, a villian with a serious shot: could not win, but would place high
Harry Potter - not in the running, he's a get beat now and come back later type dude
Indiana Jones - played by Harrison Ford, thus likely to endure a beating
Tony Soprano - fucking joke
Omar Little - WTF, dude?
Bond, James Bond - serious chances at the Sherlock/McClane/Spidey level
Altered Beast - FTW!
