Are you Nice?

Presume the answer is yes.

What is the nicest thing you've ever done for someone. Shamelessly promote yourself. Also if you had an ulterior motive like wanting to snog the person that would be funny too.

And what's the nicest thing anyone's ever done for you?

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New answers and I'll buy you all gold clocks and fish tanks.

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, I'm pretty nice (though I can be nasty on a whim). I understand that being nice is not always a good thing, but I'm kinda stuck in the cycle.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i let ppl live

dave q, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But until you get your guns this is surely more a matter of convenience than morality, dave?

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I try to be nice, but I don't really go in for the showy I've done a nice thing, thing.

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean you give a lot of money to charity but don't like to talk about it? You don't have to answer that.

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, what I mean is, I try not be nice, but if I think about it, I'm probably not overly nice.

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually more Cannes.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus Pete taoism was one thing but you've trawled a new sewer like low this time.

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"i try not be nice" - grrrr...I am making no sense. I retire gracefully from this debate.

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Join me on my Journey To The Centre OF The Earth.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but they never GET to the centre of the earth!!??

mark s, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! Hollow Earth! Oh no!

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why it's about the Journey.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you implying I'm fucking not fucking nice? Are you looking for trouble?

In real fact, I am very nice, and I do all sorts of nice things. I'm spending lots of my spare time these days writing to this severely depressed, even suicidal, person I don't really know - we only met through a web group, and have never met in real life or even spoken on the phone, but she's starting to take up a lot of my time and emotional resources. I'm not a good person to be doing this, I suspect, and I'm not optimistic that I can really help.

I've always given more than I get, in pretty much every area, I think, but that suits me - I couldn't stand to think that people gave me more than I give them. People do lots of nice things for me too - I am naive enough (after 42 years that largely prove me right) to believe that you will get a lot of good treatment back if that's how you act to others. I have rarely been treated nastily.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am Nice and giving and stuff, yeah. But sometimes I worry that I'm only nice because I fear confrontation so much and have NEVAH had a raised voices type argument with anyone outside my immediate family. Therefore I am probably not actually nice but a COWARD and a HYPOCRITE who will happily bitch until the end of time behind someone's back but will still lend them money to buy breakfast. (Real example.)

Archel, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and they never paid me back, of course. Grrr.

Archel, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I am that nice. I can be, but I'm not always. And I should work on it.

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am nice, but not as nice as I used to be. I think I used to be nice to prove a point, which isn't very nice at all.

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I am nice in a crowd of people in the sense that I am good humoured but is being nice to people you don't like meaner than being mean to people you don't like or avoiding them? I can be quite surly when I bump into someone on their own around town or college because I have a distaste for small talk with people who, truth be told, I have nothing in common with.

I am nice to my friends and try and show this but I've been too broke for months to make nice gestures like pint buying etc as regular as they should be.

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I got voted the nicest person on the board and all -- and I do thank everyone who did vote that! :-) But I don't feel very nice a lot of the time -- I'm not putting on an act, I just sense my faults more than my successes when it comes to self-analysis. But then I have to avoid false modesty, I guess. D'oh!

So no shameless promoting, but I think -- I hope! -- I've done some nice things for folks, and I'm sure ulterior motives helped more than once. The nicest thing anyone's done for me? If we're talking long term, probably my parents for raising me well. :-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would hope that others see me as nice enough although I can be a rotter. On the whole I try to be nice and think that I succeed by and large in this. Any not nice thoughts I have I try to conceal behind a sinister smile.

Jonnie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can be very very nice sometimes, but no one seems to care (do they?). The best thing I've got back is a nice hug, which is nice.

(Suzy is nice. ISN'T SHE?)

Graham, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy is very nice. :-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am only nice to people I want to be nice to. I decide this on totally arbitrary grounds. Sometimes I am not sure if the people I am being nice to realise that I am being nice to them. I also worry that I might be inadvertently being nice to someone I actually wanted to be mean to.

Emma, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This morning on the Tube it was packed as usual. An old woman with regulation tablecloth-battered trainers-Tesco carrier bag (probably full of catshit or 'lucky heather') combo, and all the years of frustration and bitterness written on her pinched, ossified face, was eyeing a seat, so I moved really fast using the ole hipsway and the seat's mine, even though she started off from 4 inches away and me from about 4 feet! This made me feel really good all morning

dave q, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice one, Dave!

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any rules of niceness vanish on the tube though. It's like Lord of The Flies with Cadbury vending machines.

Except for on the tube I am usually very nice, I think. I try to be anyway. People have done nice things for me without expecting anything back, so I try and do nice things for others.

Anna, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People tell me I'm nice. Generally, I chuckle and tell them that they don't know me well enough. (Of course, if something I've done is interpreted as being truly malicious as opposed to comedy malicious, I spiral into paroxysms of self-loathing. I suck at being mean.)

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am definitely nice, and think I've got nicer lately. However, I have no problem with conflict, and very little patience with ignorant or selfish people. So I can bitch with the best of them, argue like a motherfucker and end up apologising for my behavious far more than most.

I just want to be loved.

Mark C, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm nice, but...given to outbursts of sarcasm and sardonicism nevertheless. But I get mean FAST if anyone disses my friends.

suzy, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have given all the love I had in me

Queen G Deneuve, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am unfailingly nice, even if I don't like people much. This isn't really a good thing, always. On saturday a band came all the way from London to play at my club night and they gave me a symbolic bagel and bought me breakfast the next day! That was nice.

Oh and my friends bought me a guitar for my last birthday. That was really nice.

Ally C, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am not nice. I'm really not. It's bad.

Maria, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

umm the other day i sent away my kimber doll, which i'd had since i was a child and loved dearly, to a friend of mine who collects jem stuff. admittedly it was a trade situation but it was very hard to give away, but worth it cos she loves it very much and went around showing it off to the whole of auckland. yay! thats probbly not the nicest thing i've ever done, just the most recent.

nicest thing ever done for me? couldn't pick. people do nice stuff for me all the time, like menelaus is making me a white crimplene dress. ned sends me lots of great cdrs. i have a bunch of friends who brighten my days by giving me tapes they recorded for me. yay!

di, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about "nice" biscuits? I like them.

jel --, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i try to be nice. sometimes being nice is the easiest way to be misanthropic. btw, dave q - have you ever met the church of euthanasia people?
