You missed one movie in the Wayans brother's parody: South Central. Then there's Sugar Hill, etc. Compare these movies to the mid-late 90s hip hop movies: Phat Beach. I Got the Hook-Up, etc.

I'm not guilty. You're the one that's guilty. The lawmakers, the politicians, the Columbian drug lords, all you who lobby against making drugs legal. Just like you did with alcohol during the prohibition. You're the one who's guilty. I mean, c'mon, let's kick the ballistics here: Ain't no Uzi's made in Harlem. Not one of us in here owns a poppy field. This thing is bigger than Nino Brown. This is big business. This is the American way.

Dunno about that. I give Singleton credit for sort of founding the genre & generating a lot of needed conversation at the time of its release, but was it really that much more than an ABC after-school special with lots of guns and cursing? Seems to me the Hughes bros. took the formula & made a more realistic, less didactic, & generally better film. And Friday is just good, well-written comedy - tho its legacy has been a bit tainted a bit by the legions of bro types who quote it endlessly, sometimes with quasi-racist inflection.

In keeping with our dorkish & increasingly domestic lifestyle, my girlfriend & I sometimes procure and watch DVDs in thematic sequences, genre-based or otherwise. This past spring, we watched NJC, Boyz, Juice, Menace & SC within the span of a week or so.

i like Menace II Society best, but mostly because it has such a fucking awesome OST that i've had since it came out-- don't know how i slipped this one past my parents, think i had it on cassette originally.

I considered an 80s equivalent, but could only come up w/ shortlist, mostly Spike Lee :

1985 - The Last Dragon
1986 - She's Gotta Have It
1987 - Hollywood Shuffle
1988 - Action Jackson
1988 - I'm Gonna Git You Sucka
1988 - School Daze
1989 - Do the Right Thing

BAROQUE AS A JOKE! (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

70s Blaxploitation list can't be trimmed down enough!

Considering this:

1971 - Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song
1971 - Shaft
1972 - Blacula
1972 - Shaft's Big Score
1972 - Superfly
1972 - Troubleman
1973 - Hell Up in Harlem
1973 - The Mack
1973 - Shaft in Africa
1973 - Black Caeser
1973 - Cleopatra Jones
1973 - Coffy
1974 - Sugar Hill
1974 - Three the Hard Way
1974 - Truck Turner
1974 - Uptown Saturday Night
1974 - Black Belt Jones
1974 - Foxy Brown
1975 - Dolemite
1976 - Sparkle
1976 - Dolemite 2: Human Tornado
1976 - Car wash
1977 - Peaty Wheatstraw (The Devil's Son-in-Law)
1980 - Disco Godfather

BAROQUE AS A JOKE! (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

i could watch Peaty Wheatstraw right now.

mainly for

1.) his "act" (insulting people for about 5 minutes)
2.) later telling people he doesn't have time for this shit since he has to rehearse for his act

BAROQUE AS A JOKE! (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

For 80s, Wild Style? Beat Street? Superrappin? Was Straight Out of Brooklyn 80s or 90s?

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song should win, although Black Caesar is pretty awesome. Larry Cohen used to be able to do no wrong.

South Central
Mi Vida Loca
Laws of Gravity

Whoops, scratch Mi Vida and Laws if we're sticking to "black."

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

Menace II Society has an opening or near-opening scene that is one of the few times when I've been completely distracted by the artificiality of the design. It's so clear that they're not outside but on a soundstage, with stage lighting; it's so fake. (This is the scene where two guys are sitting on the stoop of an apartment building.) Then again, the other time I experienced this was with Eyes Wide Shut.

so the BFI is doing a MASSIVE black film season in october.

http://shadowandact.com/2016/07/13/bfi-launches-black-star-the-uks-largest-ever-celebration-of-black-actors-on-screen/

should be interesting. ashley clark is a great person to curate. BUT, why boyz in the hood as the film they are re-releasing? (i know theyre also doing in the heat of the night, i wonder what the other will be). idk if its held up.

also, is this just black film in the west? (ie US and UK?) cos if it doesnt include any african film thats going to be weird.
