Battle of the bought-back sci-fi.

I really love Nu-who. But gfriend just got me into nu-BS - I've nearly finished Series 1 and it's seriously blowing my mind how good it is.

Adama vs Doctor
Starbuck vs Donna
Cylon vs Dalek
Viper vs TARDIS

2-all draw by my reckoning.

NotEnough, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

Both kind of great. Both really flawed a bit too often.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

Can I vote for both?

Both extremely silly while at the same time managing to be very affecting.

Although in the case of BG I’m still not sure if the silliness is frakin’ intentional or not.

Pop vs Indie

and both make attempt at mediations on life/death/whatdoesitallmean without show-horning the references in (too often).

Less running through corridors in BS as well.

dunno about that

Less running through corridors in BS as well.

Lots of walking through corridors though.

Okay, if Dr Who wasn't on 'ordinary' TV I probably wouldn't buy the DVD box-set. Battlestar isn't on 'ordinary' TV and I bought the box-set's, so it wins! I like both though.

i don't know many americans who are into dr. who, i'm guessing that's going to be a big dividing line

I don't know many Brits into BSG really.

I am the exception to the rule!

I actually find myself getting really angry at President Roslin, and shouting "listen to Starbuck, you fools!".

This is a horribly unfair and nonsensical poll! I guess I'd have to go with BSG, considering how much it improved on its source material.

BSG by a country mile. Nu Who is occasionally very good indeed, but has nothing like the scope or ambition of Galactica. BSG has definitely had its longeurs over the seasons but the number of great episodes and great stuff in mediocre episodes vastly outweighs Dr Who. Plus it has a terrific ensemble cast; I recognise that Who is *obviously* about the Dr himself, but the supporting cast are rarely much cop compared to BSG.

I dunno about the US/Brit divide in terms of BSG/Who love; I'm a Brit but I do know that amongst my friends BSG has many more followers and appeals much more to those who would in no way self-describe as Sci-Fi fans, but certainly Dr Who is vastly more popular with the British public. I'd say BSG's failure to make much of a splash here is probably due to its only being shown on a satellite channel, although lots of great US imports have festered with poor scheduling on the terrestrials too.

these shows have pretty much nothing in common

dr who is also a family show

Gukbe, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

Doctor Who is of course big here bug BSG never took off terrestrially. That said I don't watch much FTA anyway because it's shit.

So Doctor Who, for longevity and endless possibilities.

Bondzilla vs Mechaholmes (blueski), Friday, 23 January 2009 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

So Doctor Who, for longevity and endless possibilities.

The exact opposite of BSG, judging by how the final season is going to end.

James Mitchell, Friday, 23 January 2009 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

I've only seen the first series of BSG, and while it works as a drama, I'm going to risk controversy and say it's not very good sci-fi. While it has some good ideas, the details of the universe are muddled and inconsistent. Not that Who hasn't had more than its share of inconsistencies over the years, but the central conceit and the length of its run makes that more forgivable. At heart, Who is an anthology show with a recurring central character to anchor it, which is why any conscious attempts to create a continuity almost always fall flat.

Don't really know what my point is, but Who is much closer to my heart and I think it succeeds better on its own terms. But as someone pointed out, the two shows aren't particularly comparable.
