i am considering an upcoming vacation -- i've already been to italy (north of rome -- i'd also like to visit the mezzogiornio region someday as well), and i am considering sardinia. one doesn't hear much about the place from the usual tourist sites, and as far as italian islands go it doesn't loom as large as sicily. but i've looked over some sites devoted to sardinia as well as its wikipedia page, and it seems like it has a lot going for it -- lots of interesting ancient sites, lovely beaches, a culture and language very distinct from mainland italy or sicily, and even a throat-singing tradition (!)
