i found the picture to be worth a giggle. one reasoni find it funny is because many of us have been there at that age trying to attach yourself to a look, a culture, a style, as a way of defining and protecting yourself. and we all know that in a few years these boys could be wearing black rimmed glasses and listening to the get up kids, or wearing black eyeliner and slipknot hoodies. because thats what a lot of kids do when looking for identity. and looking back and comparing it with my own teenage years, its funny, im as much laughing at my old self as at them

i think their perceived background (im guessing they are suburban, because of the leafy background and the cars, theres no inherent shame in that, i grew up in the suburbs myself) also has something to do with why i laughed too. when i was a kid, i knew i wasnt macho, whatever pose i tried to pull, and its quite a possibility that these kids arent particularly macho either (although maybe they are and im just wrong, i can't rule out this possibility)

but to say there is any inherent racism in finding the pictures funny is a dramatic leap of logic that does not hold up to close examination. im not denying that certain subconcious stereotypes, including racial ones, are involved in why i found that picture funny. we are all affected by them and to pretend to be perfectly unprejudiced would be foolish. but such minor subconscious prejudices do not make anyone a racist as i think most people would define that as involving a conscious prejudice as well.
