is this the best fast food place ever?

kevin enas, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. I am eating it right now. So good.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Walter: "He lives in North Hollywood on Radford, near the In-and-Out Burger..."
The Dude: "The In-and-Out Burger is on Camrose."
Walter: "Near the In-and-Out Burger..."
Donny: "Those are good burgers, Walter."
Walter: "Shut the fuck up, Donny."

Josh, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Crazy, I'm eating it right now too. Just had an earthquake, and it made me hungry for In-N-Out. Same thing happen to you, A in SF?

Kris, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I need my fix every few weeks or so -- happily, there is one right across from UCI.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Silicon Valley gets poked indeed.

Animal-style grill cheese sandwiches at In-N-Out are great... I made sure to stop by the In-N-Out in Kings County off I-5 to get me a couple of them for the road... unfortunately, those grilled onions are like canned corn in the sense that they are sturdy all the way through your digestive tract. And the fries suck after 5 minutes.. otherwise, classique.

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are we gonna get these things on the East Coast sometime?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris, I was actually in the car driving to the In N Out in Fisherman's Wharf and listening to sports radio and there was a break and voila. . . Maybe my hunger was caused by shifts in the tectonic plates or maybe it was just the fact that those are good burgers. I'm not sure.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't it a religious conspiracy?

Honda, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also... the earthquake made me eat pizza.

Honda, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah the crazy Christianity thing is the one super DUD thing about In N Out. Oh well.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

are we gonna get these things on the East Coast sometime?

Didn't you guys just have one in upstate New York that took out a road or something? Do you want more?

Do you want NOTHING SHORT OV TOTAL WAR?

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

u can get things 'protein style' no bread wrapped in lettuce.

chaki, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The earthquake made me call the cute boy I'm kinda seeing and say some silly stuff and now I'm really embarassed. I spoiled everything! No I didn't. Yes I did! Ok, I didn't but he thinks I'm silly. Which I am. I'm certainly pent up and horny. Gothic onanism rules! I'll tie this all in to In-N-Out some way... acutally there's a pretty easy way.

Sean, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never in my life do I recall seeing one of these, even when I was in California. Is it one of those weird chains that are only West Coast, like the slightly sinister Carl's Junior (if that's even how it's spelled, I don't remember)?

Nicole, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We have Carl's Jr. in TX but sadly no in-n-out

S., Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You never saw an In-n-Out around here, Nicole? We were remiss in showing you the full California experience. :-) Yeah, like Carl's and Coors, it's run by a bunch of fundamentalists who disturb my soul with their little Biblical verse citations on the packaging. Thankfully it's subtle.

I'll tie this all in to In-N-Out some way... acutally there's a pretty easy way.

One of the odder things in high school was the guy who didn't get what it meant when people took 'In-N-Out Burger' bumper stickers and trimmed off the 'B' and 'R' in 'burger.'

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thinking that Carl's Junior is "slightly sinister" gives it an appeal it never had before! What I want to know--really--is why it's Carl's Junior and not Carl Junior's.

Sean, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We don't need no ficken' In-N-Out, we got...

DICK'S!

Brian MacDonald, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't In-N-Out the sole Eric Schlosser-approved fast-food model? (Albeit based more on labor structure than product?)

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

are we gonna get these things on the East Coast sometime?

There is an excellent In-N-Out style burger place in the East Village called Blue 9 Burger. People here don't know what In-N-Out is so they don't market it as such and of course it's not quite as good but it is the same basic idea: super fresh, simple, limited menu, hand-cut fries, real shakes etc.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna talk all crazy here: I think In-N-Out is overrated. It's like this weird received wisdom that I just don't get. The burgers are way better than McDonalds, but the fries are a little boring. Actually the burgers are really good, but not so good that I'd put a "In-N-Out Urge" bumper sticker on my car or anything.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never once eaten at or even seen an In-N-Out burger and I'd put that sticker on my car.

Hah...who needs those guys when the DC area has Five Guys? Mmmmmmm, Five Guys' burgers...

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with spencer on the fries; that being said, i think the fries are MUCH better south of bakersfield than north (hi, i used to drive a lot).

i think the key to in n out burger aside from the obvious (fresh, unfrozen meat/produce) is when you order the burger with grilled onions, the way the grilled onions and cheese blend together is very pleasing to the taste.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's the packaging. It's really cute.

I can honestly say, from back in my carnivorous days, that Five Guys is insanely good.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

This is my main motivation for going out to the west coast. Seriously.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

In N Out has an economic advantage over the other places mentioned upthread (Five Guys & Blue 9) seeing as they're both about double the price of In N Out for the price of a hamburger. Even a double double (2 patties, 2 cheese) at $2.65 is still about a buck something less than a plain hamburger at those establishments.

i do love how how so many restaurants have to have a "thing" though. in-n-out's got the secret menu, five guys has their "fill your bag to the brim with fries" and peanuts, etc.

too many food shows on tv with "it just wouldn't be a meal at Big Ed's without their signature two steamed artichokes and boot filled with home brewed chipotle horseradish sauce!".

circa1916, Friday, 2 April 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

If we are going to bring the 909 into this, I should point out my ridiculous yet strongly-held belief that the In N Out on Garey Ave. in Pomona (one of the old ones without indoor seating) has the best milkshakes of all the In N Outs. Similarly, I rep for the fries at either of the two locations in the San Fernando Valley on Van Nuys Blvd. (Sherman Oaks and Panorama City), which are usually a lil' crispier (but not overly so) than the locations that were closer to me when I lived in West LA. I will still take the softest of In N Out fries over Five Guys (although there is a way-too-expensive mini-chain out here in DC called BGR that has some amazingly great Yukon Gold fries, which I will admit are better than either In N Out or 5 Guys). My usual routine at 5 Guys is to not order any fries, and save more room for free peanuts.

Basically I think I have been to In N Out so many times that I came to believe that each individual location is like its own unique, slight variation on the theme. This probably isn't true, but it did enable me to justify going to every new In N Out I could find, in the name of science.

C-L, Friday, 2 April 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

I salute this noble effort.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 April 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

PN I've seen people commenting on fry recipes say to soak your fries in sugar water overnight - supposedly helps with the overall crispiness

Yeah adam get the grilled cheese.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 12 September 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

i once tried negotiating with a vegetarian to order a cheeseburger, but order it with a burger on the side because it was equivalent to a grilled cheese, and about the same price, so i could have the extra patty. this burger arbitrage didn't work out.

if you can get grilled cheese maybe you can also get animal style fries?

> 5 Guys started with just a few places in Northern Virginia, outside Washington DC, then they began franchising...I liked the original pre-franchising locations

I thought it was just me! The burgers at the two recently-opened Five Guys near me not as good as what I remembered from 10 years ago. Even then, the fries were too greasy, but the burgers were good. It's still a great value though - their "little" burgers are the size of everyone else's regular ones. And of course the free peanuts while you're waiting are awesome.

I've heard raves about BGR: The Burger Joint from several of my friends but haven't made it to one yet.
