I don't think it's an indefensible statement at all-- it acknowledges the irreducible properties of an object which can't be altered or changed, only accepted and dealt with. Saying so allows those dealing with a thing to move from that point. Also used to mean, "It's only going to get to a certain point, because of its inherent limitations, so let's not worry about those characteristics." A useful, if overused, statement.
Apologies if post is repetive. IIWII.

Michael, what was the term you were using to describe Calvin & Hobbes -- "zen stoicism?" I think this phrase is like the Everyman / Joe Sixpack version of "zen stoicism."
― nabisco, Thursday, 29 January 2009 18:45 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, nabs, but I also kind of agree with M. V.'s "It's a cross between "shit happens" and "I hate you." There's definitely a hint of "I really have no interest in talking to you about this further" in it for me.
I'm kind of haunted by the French I cited above. Saying 'War is war' (essentially) belies a culture that has experienced enough of it to be far too cynical about it, though I think that's the kind of expression that originated before the 20th Century.

i have a grudging respect for sayings like this (and other businessese) cos they are useful. ppl talk like this because there isn't time or reason to get worked up or super detailed about whatever shitty situation they are stuck in.
ie "we have x to take care of before y date but z dependencies are being blown out of proportion and marge and dave from testing still haven't written their specs for the LAST thing..." "it is what it is"
it has a "who gives a fuck, none of this shit is real anyway, even if it's stressful"

Yeah, I see this used typically only in interviews with athletes who are being asked, "how did it feel to lose that big game?" and they're like, "it is what it is", which suggests the goal is stopping the conversation.
