i kind of lost enthusiasm for this thread in the middle of starting it

HELLO
i don't care about football but i like parties and work in marketing so i think ads are kinda intersting. the end.
― tehresa, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:12 (seventeen years ago)
I think the Steelers are gonna win, and they're gonna win early.
― "Buri" Al Yankovich (Dom Passantino), Friday, 30 January 2009 14:13 (seventeen years ago)
Dud. But sympathetic dud. I understand that some people don't enjoy sports. I don't know why they don't, but I get that they don't. Yet there's still this monolithic cultural moment in the United States that revolves completely around the playing of sports. It's almost admirable that people have somehow decided that they can enjoy commercials - the most inane, annoying aspect of Capitalism - just so they can participate in the Super Bowl. I think even the Puppy Bowl (or whatever it's called?) is better than watching the Super Bowl for the ads.
― Mordy, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:13 (seventeen years ago)
the most inane, annoying aspect of Capitalism
I realize this may be challopskies.
― Mordy, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:14 (seventeen years ago)
it's not that i don't enjoy sports! i love watching basketball.
― tehresa, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:15 (seventeen years ago)
what about the nerds who just look forward to the unveiling of big summer movie trailers?
― Gukbe, Friday, 30 January 2009 14:15 (seventeen years ago)
wouldn't actually be annoyed by this except the ads fucking suck & are so cloying in their "do I get to be viral yet? hey, this'll sound great at the water cooler amirite?" way
concept of watching a sporting event for the ads = fine, but watching the superbowl for the unimaginative groveling-for-your-approval ads = dud
― J0hn D., Friday, 30 January 2009 14:21 (seventeen years ago)
he most inane, annoying aspect of Capitalism
couldn't you throw the televised game into this category as well, with the various logos flying across our screen as they sponsor various stats?

advertising is one of the few things I hate more than the NFL
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:09 (seventeen years ago)
the superbowl is our nations most important holiday therefor people are welcome to enjoy it in whichever way they please whether it be by food commercials booze fellowship or sporting pleasure because this is america which is also the greatest nation on earth. however i prefer to have those who focus on the commercials at a different superbowl party than the one im at because theyre wicked annoying. lock thread.
― ice cr?m, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:14 (seventeen years ago)
super bowl commercials are sometimes lol but usually they try too hard
― every little thing she says is custos (Curt1s Stephens), Friday, 30 January 2009 15:17 (seventeen years ago)
I feel the same way about pro football fwiw
I used to this person and now I'm a huge football fan and don't give a damn about the stupid beer ads.
(I also don't give a damn about the Steelers vs the Cards though)
― iatee, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:37 (seventeen years ago)
i love superbowl ads and i basically expect them to be better than the game this year
― max, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
do they still do the bud bowl?
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
i think the ads, parties etc are a bigger deal this year because the game is so horrible
― mad loli vamp bone (cankles), Friday, 30 January 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)
i find it hilarious and heartwarming that small five minute sales pitches are considered a mass cultural event
― max, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)
i've never understood why more eccentric millionaires don't spend $10 mil or whatever to run crazy vanity ads during the superbowl, like just one long take of them spouting off about the right way to make toast
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)
also i am very impressed with the level of skill & artistry demonstrated in many of these advertisements, and simultaneously confused and reassured at the fact that most of them are of greater artistic than the academy award nominees for any given year
― max, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:41 (seventeen years ago)
greater artistic merit
ads have specific and tangible goals
"generality is the enemy of all art"
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:45 (seventeen years ago)
im not going to get in an argument about this unless we can agree that the terms of the argument are: each one of us prepares a 30-sec. video that represents his views on the matter, and then we take a vote
― max, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:46 (seventeen years ago)
bringin respeck for whoredom
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:46 (seventeen years ago)
football games also have specific and tangible goals, indicated by chains, lasers, and giant painted grassy areas, ergo football is better than movies
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)
lasers?!
― max, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
isn't that how tv wizards put the big bright line on the screen, indicating the first down?
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:56 (seventeen years ago)
i didnt know that!
― max, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:57 (seventeen years ago)
they should have put it in an ad
will SB run an ad for Joe Torre's book?
― Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 January 2009 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

― Badder Meinhof Syndrome (libcrypt), Friday, 30 January 2009 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

last year in the UK the superbowl was on BBC2, i.e... no ads!! all the millions of minutes of ad time were filled instead with chat and hilariously inept analysis
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 January 2009 16:24 (seventeen years ago)
^^^ sounds like an ad for ads, if you catch my drift
― max, Friday, 30 January 2009 16:25 (seventeen years ago)
yeah for sure. channel five, a commercial station, broadcasts live mlb games on sundays and wednesdays from approx 1am-5am with no ads, but the only reason there aren't any ads is because there are literally no advertisers who feel that it's worth it. instead we get unbelievably poor studio chat from this british jackass who still says "an innings" from time to time and a know-it-all american guy who can barely disguise his contempt
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 January 2009 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

(actually not true, i haven't watched the super bowl in years)
Jonny is a passionate fan of the Atlanta Braves, and will defend them to the hilt, with regular calls of "G'won the Braves" when they win; his favourite player is Chipper Jones.

Yeah, I won't be happy until flames engulf the earth, I know, I know...

i remember this amazing ad where these dudes were trying to get (wait for it!) a super-homely girl to get up off the cooler she was sitting on, urging her to dance with them, so they could get to their bud light! rofl!

logged into youtube today and accidentally clicked the main icon not realizing that ADBLITZ is a separate section of the site just containing superbowl ads. there is a gallery of ads and here's a selection of promoted thumbnails:

we have reached a future of people watching TV on their computers where ads are more or less optional* yet 16 million people voluntarily wanted to see the new Budweiser commercial wtf
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 4 February 2018 18:36 (eight years ago)
*optional in that yes there are still ads you have to sit through, making the choice to sit through those involuntary ads to voluntarily watch ads a puzzling one
