What is your middle name? Has it ever been a source of embarrassment?

MarkH, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine is Denise. I did find it kind of embarassing when I was a kid, because it seemed like every other girl had Anne or Lynn as a middle name.

Nicole, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I could never understand why some parents choose such awful middle names for their kids.

MarkH, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i do not have one! (sometimes i think i'm the only human extant without.)

jess, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have two obv. Michael and Kevin. Not so much embarassing as generic.

Ronan, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine is Edward, which is after my father, who is always known as Ted. My mother is Pamela Irene. Her mother's first name was Irene. I think that the tradition of giving a child the first name of the parent as a middle name is a good one.

MarkH, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

James. When I was 8, I tried to get people to call me Jim instead of Dan. That didn't go over with anyone except my father (who calls his kids by affectionate versions of their middle names anyway when he's feeling chipper).

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a friend whose middle name was Morrissey. Arf.

Matt, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Edmund. I like it.

jel --, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My mother had an aunt called Constance. her middle name was Norah. Say them together quickly.

MarkH, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine is Macdonald after my mums maiden name. Reminds me of my Highland ancestry.

mms, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This has definitely come up before....

Emma, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Jess, I don't have one either.

Anna, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I also live my life without. Let's form a discussion/support group.

Graham, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew, which I actually rather like.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mikolaj! Much nicer than the English translation ("Nicholas").

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyDavidT, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine is Ann (without an E - sob). But for some reason when I was about 9 I told all my friends it was Hermione.

Archel, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Matthew. No.

stevo, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My little brother's middle name is Andrew as well & his initials are JAH. Mine are ECH = boring boring boring middle name. My cousin's kids have fantastic (or fantastically silly?) names incl. Bianca Daniella, Paige Saffron & Declan Scott (NB they are not from Italy, Essex or Ireland).

Emma, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's because I was going to be Sophie Anna Fielding, but the Sophie got lost along the way. I still use it if I need an alias.

Anna, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My first name has caused far more embarassment than either of my middle names. My last name is no picnic either, "FIIIIIIIIIIIIIITZY!"

Ronan, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Richard

Tom, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of mine is Charles. But which one?

Jeff W, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot to how to spell my middle name at one point because I hadn't used it in so long. It's Philip.

Jordan, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a Vietnamese-American roommate in college whose middle name was Phuc. We really thought that with that middle name, he should have scored A LOT MORE.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes i forget how to spell my middle name too.

nancy b., Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Michael" and "Luke" - the latter as in "Skywalker" as a matter of fact (thank you sis!)

Tim, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My middle name is my father's first name; my wife's middle names are her grandmothers' first names. Lucky me: my father is called Philip. Unlucky she: my wife's grandmothers are called Hildegard and Hedwig.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mine is ambrose, although its peter. my paretns thought they'd put my middle name before my first name. so when people who know me as ambrose, see 'peter ambrose samuel', they say 'why dont you like the name peter?'/ I OVE THE NAME PETER ITS JUST NOT MY NAME NEVER HAS BEEN. grrr bastid parents - will give me grief for the rest of my life eg filling in official forms. although i knew someone with TWO names before his er...real name. thats even worse.

ambrose, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh no! Repeated thread! Oh no!

Though, I'm glad to see my opinion on this matter has not changed.

jel --, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony, same as my Dad.
Apparently My Grandad had a thing about initials making a word (or at least a pronouceable sound)

Simeon, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also not sure whether mine is Anthony or Antony. I like Anthony cos it makes me sound posher. (Am not posh, Am Northern scum)
Like Ambrose, my partner has crazy mixed up middle/first names.

Simeon, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HA (it has traumatized me)

Honda, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Matthew, which I'm not fond of. When I was young I used to tell people it was Vinnie.

Chris, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose all the people with genuinely embarrassing middle names have kept quiet until now. I may as well admit mine before Andrew L outs me: Herbert. It has caused me frequent mild but amusing embarrassment. Highlight: my wedding was the first time the bride's family had heard it. Extended muffled giggling ensued.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lydia.

Ally, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil.

Ally C, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend (who has no middle name) put "NMI" on her college application. Months later, when she was enrolled, she went to the office for something and the staff said "Oh YOU'RE the girl with the funny middle name. Tell us, how do you pronounce that?!".

We called her Nimmy for the next 3 years.

Pyth, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it is a constant source of embarrassment and so it will remain secret! (unless i already said it somewhere in ile but yeah let's hope not)

Maria, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maria: is it Flibberty-Gibbit?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm SPEECHLESS. i cannot come up with a witty reply so forget it

Maria, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lynn. This was something I loathed for the first section of my childhood...now I kinda like it.

jen, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
lol...Francisca. its weird. and i loath it still..

Jeanneth, Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Richard.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry, which is my dad's middle name (the name he goes by) - a name I like more now than I used to, and Walter (my grandfather's name) which I love.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul (what I could've been) and Matthew (my dad).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Charles, which was my grandfather's name. When I was little, for some reason this honestly genuinely seemed like the most humiliatingly awful name any human could be given EVER.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Optimus

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine is Garrett. It was also my father's middle name, passed on (despite the fact I am a girl) due to my mom's reasoning that I could always drop my surname and go with the middle. She has recently brought this option up again a lot despite the fact I'm quite happy with my name as it is.

When I had to have an operation several years ago, my surgeon's name was "R. Armour Forse" on his nametag. I thought that was a pretty rad moniker for a surgeon--even though the R stood for Robert and not, say, Robot.

sgs, Friday, 14 November 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

hanle y

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ruth; I don't like it but don't have a reason why.

Chevy.

rainy (rainy), Friday, 14 November 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Geoffrey.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I still have two. It is still a pain in the ass because official forms only ever have room for one. I still, however, like the fact that it makes my middle initials M.C. like I'm into hip hop or something.

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 14 November 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

eden - it's a family name (there's a choice of two that male stelfoxes have always had. the other's bernard, so it could have been a lot worse.) i hated it whe i was little, but i really like it now.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 14 November 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My middle names are Barbro Märta, both were horribly unfashionable when I was a kid, they're old ladies' names, and I was mocked endlessly because of them.

Now I like Märta a lot, I've even considered using it - calling myself Hanna Märta as a double name.

Barbro still sounds like a mean old guidance councellor to my ears though.

Hanna (Hanna), Friday, 14 November 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Christine

I always thought it sounded prissy.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 14 November 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

jackal.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

sphere.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron, which I like. Apparently doesn't have any meaning to the family. The two A's rock.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

simon.
me mum wanted it for me first name but me dad said no no he'll be called simple simon so they went for second name with it.

and i got called gaz the spaz.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Faith. And so I blame my mother for my present lack thereof.

mouse, Friday, 14 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It isn't Bloody, tragically. Be cool if it was. "I'm William Bloody Swygart, you bunch of fat fucks! SERVICE! NOW!"

(Pray children are never visited upon me...)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Kent. No.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I got 2 first names. The other one's Nana-Edusei. Cool or wot?

Barima (Barima), Friday, 14 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My middle name is Elise, which is a variant of a name that not only means "God is my oath" but is also the middle name of another member of the ILXiverse! But... yes folks, this means my initials are DEA. Bloody hell, people, I'm a governmental agency!

I've got a confirmation name, though -- Natalie (derived from Saint Natalia). I like what my initials are when I take *that* into consideration instead of my middle name -- it's DNA, so it appeals to the "oh wow, science is cool!" aspect of myself.

Combining these names together just produced DENA. Blah. Nothing. ;)

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and I haven't been embarrassed by my middle name. I like it a lot.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

My middle name is Jane. Plain Jane.

I always wanted it to be something nicer, like Annabelle or Chloe.

C J (C J), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course then my screen name would have to be CA or CC, which probably doesn't sound as good as CJ, which is a cool name.

Pls ignore me I haf been drinking. Actually I have been to the first CHRISTMAS PARTY of the year, hurrah.

I feel a bit sick now :(

C J (C J), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have one, but I tell everyone that I do and it's Francesco. I don't know why.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine is Whitmore, my paternal grandmother's maiden name.

Clarke B. (stolenbus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert. A proudly family name. Never the source of any embarassment. Shortens nicely to 'Bob'. Mikey 'Bob' Stuchbery. I like that.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

John.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My middle name is Gale.

gale, Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

athos magnani (Cozen), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

my middle name is michel, pronounced "michael". the weird thing about it is that it is my mom's name as well. yes, people call her "mike".

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

joseph. And if you ever see me wearing a white jacket you can call me A.J.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

aight a.j.

athos magnani (Cozen), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I go by JA at times (middle name Ann). I always though Anne with-an-e looked much nicer than what I've got.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

this customer at my work, her middle name is NEAT

Blackout Crew are the Beatles of donk (jim), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

hasn't caused me embarrassment but i have been made fun of for it.

Blackout Crew are the Beatles of donk (jim), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

fox

not a family name, my parents just liked it. did my best to conceal it into high school years, because it seemed weird to me -- my friends mostly had middle names like michael or james or andrew or whatever. but i started using it in my byline on my college paper, and found it made the name jump out. so i've stuck with it for professional writing purposes (however pretentious a 3-name byline looks). also, i've turned it into a family name by giving it to my oldest son (his first name is different, i didn't want to have a jr., but i thought "fox" was worth passing on).

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 01:01 (sixteen years ago)

my middle name is William, but sometimes I tell people that it is Wolfgang.

t0dd swiss, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 01:27 (sixteen years ago)

I'm the third member of my family to have this middle name and each one of us has hated it. We don't even say it out loud and we just use the initial on forms. It's horrible.

•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 03:55 (sixteen years ago)

fox is an awesome middle name

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 10:27 (sixteen years ago)

Mine is Shepherd. And also Lawrence.

Pete W, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

My grandmother's maiden name. Unfortunately this happened to be Thomas, which is already a common first name in its own right.
A generation earlier it would have been "Wilding". :(

JTS, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

I am dying to know PP's middle name!

Mine's Maureen. It was going to be my first name, but my brother decided he could not tolerate a sister called "Mo".

kate78, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

Fredrik, which I spent my entire youth try to spell more normally.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

(conventionally)

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

a girl in my high school had the middle name "theobald" -- it was a family name, but jeez. give a kid a break.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

Kai. Thank god for message boards, otherwise I might never use it. My parents had heard of jazz trombonist Kai Winding and thought it was a cool name. My brothers have less conventionally middle names too -- Jace and Eben.

lindseykai, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

mine is marie. boring.

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

it's kind of weird and uncanny to have this extra superfluous never-used other-person's first name just hanging there between your real everyday name like some vestigial appendage

fox and kai are cool though

See you dudes on the G train (rent), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

Mine is Nicole although my maiden name is now also a second middle.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

Mine is Elizabeth, as is pretty much every woman in my family, with the exception of my sister.. Elizabeth. Sheesh, guys.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:49 (sixteen years ago)
