Get Yr Creep On

An old friend of mine just e-mailed to say she was feeling "CREEPY" about liking a younger guy. (She is not at all creepy, by the way). Then I check out ILE and ILM to find a fungi of alleged CREEPINESS creeping around, creepily...

What does CREEPY mean to you?

Can it ever be a good thing? Sure it is in comics and butthole surfers songs, but in real life?

You have removed her face. That is surely creepy.

That'll be the sun, N.

Graham, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

say what you will about creepiness itself, but the words "creep" and "creepy" are just about the perfect sounding words for their meanings.

"freak" and "freaky" are good like that too. damn. I should've called this thread "creepy trigger" for maximum in-jokery.

fritz, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

could this recent rash of creepyness have anything to do with SPRING FEVER?

jess, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I pre-emptively ask that this thread be about the word "creepy" and the perfection of its sound:meaning ratio and that sort of thing, not a meta-thread about anybody's real or perceived creepiness on ILx?

fritz, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's what I was doin.

Graham, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant:

top five songs about creeps
(in order of coolness = reverse order of excellentness):

1) Memphis Creep - The Oblivians
2) Creep in the Cellar - Butthole Surfers
3) Negative Creep - Nirvana
4) Creep - TLC
5) I'm a Creep I'm a Weirdo - The Radioheads

I think I have managed to creep jess and graham out with my anti-creepiness fatwah - sorry - creepiness is apparently quite hard to contain once its let loose

fritz, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bummer...I saw the thread title and thought you were referring to some hot new bootleg remix.

j.lu, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you should read 'the gift of fear' : if it feels 'creepy' to you, it probably is. stay away, and you'll survive.

"Alvin "Creepy" Karpis was the lone survivor of the close-knit group of thieves who terrorized and intruiged America. Only four men held the title of Public Enemy #1 during the infamous 1930 era. The others - Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd and John Dillinger - all died violently. J. Edgar Hoover claimed to have personally put the cuffs on the notorious Karpis, but during this interview Karpis reveals the truth about that event, as well as many other adventurous accounts of his days of robbing and kidnapping. When Karpis was placed in Alcatraz his cell mates were Doc Barker, Machine-Gn Kelly and Al Capone. Thirty years later a young convict - Charles Manson - persuaded the old gangster to teach him to play guitar. Karpis's real, first-hand descriptions of crime legends often conflict with our mythical images."

That's from some video box cover.

I don't know, he doesn't look all that creepy to me. Apparently the cops gave him the nickname.

Arthur, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham has just put a picture of my cousin on the net. Or rather one that looks like her. How very creepy.

cuba libre (nathalie), Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Would she have been travelling North on the Metropolitan line on a Saturday afternoon in late March?

Graham, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is it deliberate that the graffiti "de" in CdeB above looks like a graffiti nob?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no, Arthur, I think you'll find that creep by Radiohead is quite possibly the worst , whingy, whining song of all time

chris, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
I just thought it was time this creepiness continued. Is it creepy to google old creepy threads?

Nice one Nick! I recall intending to mention to Alan that Chris DeB had found a graffito by Cabbage, but I forgot.

An old friend of mine just e-mailed to say she was feeling "CREEPY" about liking a younger guy... What does CREEPY mean...

Relax, fritz. All your friend was trying to convey was that she feels like a demented clown who exposes herself to children. That's all.
