Hello ILX
I haven't posted for a long time.
Tried to go to work today, but my manager told me to go home, so I had fun in North London instead...

Jordan, most of Britain gets as much as snow as the U.S. Pacific Northwest i.e. just enough to be a brief novelty every winter or so.
― System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 2 February 2009 20:12 (sixteen years ago)
but 2008/2009 WAS NO ORDINARY WINTER (for both regions, apparently)
What I found quite amusing is that the entire bus system in London had to shut down, even though there was a similar amount of snow a couple of years ago in Oxford and the buses were still running then...

Not as exciting but my back garden (as far as I ventured today):

Xpost: the news we get about GB abroad tends to be rather London-centric, you could easily think that the whole of Britain isn't used to snow. sorry for not thinking before posting :-(

It was kinda beautiful today. The only people crazy enough to be driving were smart enough to be doing about 15mph and the whole area was silent.

― The Unbelievably Insensitive Baroness Vadera (Ned Trifle II), Tuesday, 3 February 2009 09:38 (sixteen years ago)
Also, yes, snow cat, super cool.
Just went into work - quickest commute for ages, the buses have the roads to themselves and the schoolkids all presumably have another snow day - to find the office building is still shut. Still, Mitcham Common and Cricket Green looked awfully pretty in the dawning sunshine.

Exactly; there's no bloody infrastructure in areas of this country for snow. Of course everyone goes nuts when it snows.

OTM. What a surprise that Moscow copes with snowfall much better than London - they've only been getting it every winter for 10,000 years.

It was pretty mental up here in Glasgow for a few hours last night - about 4pm-6pm it was proper going for it. I cycled home along Edinburgh Road, which is a 6-lane 40mph main road, about 5-5:30pm and it was treacherous.

Changing the ISO alone isn't going to do that. Yes, if you keep aperture and shutter speed the same, you'll over-expose, but there are better ways of doing that than pumping up the noise in your picture with increased ISO. Just a little exposure compensation will do it. I prefer to shoot Raw, fix the colour temperature afterwards (AWB gets confused by all that white) and add a stop and a half in Lightroom.
Not that my two pictures above are remotely good examples of this! One is lit through a window by tungsten lamp, the other is deliberately vignetted...
― Michael Jones, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 13:54 (sixteen years ago)
(Ok, I'm contradicting myself in that opening para - YES, increasing ISO ALONE is going to over-expose, but only if you're shooting manual can you do that. Most folks probably shoot aperture-priority or some form of auto, where changing the ISO will change something else too).
― Michael Jones, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 13:56 (sixteen years ago)
And here is some proper white snow (lovely colours, Nick, btw):

Ned T3, now you know how Seattle, Portland, etc. feels when they get their city-life-derailing oooh-fun! few inches of snow every other winter, and everyone east of us in the U.S. goes "pfff, you can't even function in THAT?"
I feel like wrecking havoc on the NYC/NJ people who freaked out at the measly 3.0 earthquake they had the other day. keh keh keh.

http://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/news-articles/0902/iceball
UCL artist Martin John Callanan has documented strange alien sights in Victoria Park, East London.
In an email to colleagues and friends, Martin wrote:
“Here is some important news I must share with you.
Late last night I began hearing reports of strange icy objects in a part of east London commonly referred to as Victoria Park. It was too dark to investigate and the park was locked until this morning. At dawn I set out to investigate, having only just returned to my office, this is the first email I write. What I discovered was so strange and unusual the first step was to upload the documentation to my website and contact you as a matter of urgency.
Within what appeared to be a rather contained area of roughly 200 acres coinciding remarkably with the boundary of Victoria Park, I found and recorded more than 300 occurrences of what I refer to as “ice balls”. These are roughly spherical objects ranging from ~30cm to more than ~150cm diameter. For now, until more information becomes available to me, I must surmise these ‘ice balls’ are similar in origin to hail. Perhaps this exaggerated scale is the latest phenomenon associated to our rapidly changing climate.”
Martin – a UCL Slade School of Fine Art staff member – has created the mini-project in his role as Artist-in-Residence at the UCL Environment Institute. He explained: “These objects are indeed most unusual and unaccountable; we have, as yet, been unable to explain these unaccustomed icy spheres and demi-spheres.”
