nonetheless, who are the famous people who are from (that is, raised or born in) your immediate neighborhood?

funny thing is that i only have one: Jerry Garcia was born and raised two blocks away from where I live.

Ma$e went to Lee High School, supposedly.

I lived most of my adult life in Riverside, two blocks away.

i'm close neighbours (one next door, the other eight house numbers up the street) with members of two very prominent aussie indie bands, but to call them famous would be a bit of a stretch

Jad and David Fair from Half-Japanese are probably the only remotely "famous" people from around here. My friend worked at the local library with David a few years ago without knowing who he was. Apparently he's a super sweet guy and he did story time for the children.

In 1980 Bon Scott, the lead singer of AC/DC, after a night's heavy drinking, was found lifeless in a car outside 67 Overhill Road, East Dulwich. He was rushed to hospital but was dead on arrival at King's College Hospital.

Counting the whole DC/Silver Spring/Chevy Chase/Gaithersburg area as "immediate neighborhood" is stretching things quite a bit. Having sat in the DC - Gaithersburg traffic for more hours than I care to count, I'd barely count them as "adjoining neighborhoods," let alone immediate!

But, if we're going that way, then the members of Bone Thugz n Harmony, along with famous track & field guys Harrison Dillard and Jesse Owens, all grew up in Glenville, an East Cleveland neighborhood about 15 minutes from me.

Didn't mean to include the Gaithersburg dude, but yeah true. Silver Spring, Chevy Chase and Bethesda were suburbs immediately abutting my neighborhood, like I could walk to them. Rockville might be a slight stretch but it was where I went for the mall, haircuts, etc. I lived on the DC side and my neighborhood didn't have a name. Arlene Sorkin is the only one I knew of who lived in my immediate vicinity.

Zero in current hood. Old hood was rife, but: John Logie Baird; Deborah Kerr; Johnnie Beattie.

If I wanted to do my current hood (Brooklyn Heights) I think there's a pretty long list of people within a small area.

My mom would like to point out that when she was a kid on our same street, her neighbour was Harry Reasoner, cub reporter - she babysat his kids - and the Papandreou family (including George, Greece's current prime minister) lived a block over because that's where Andreas lived when he was a U of M prof in the '50s. A little further away was John Denver (he invited my mom to a giant party at his absent parents' house). He lived in Morningside, the part of Edina that starts a block or two from her current house, not far from where Judith Guest lives.
