Are you going on a holiday this summer?

I hope this hasn't been asked already. Also as a meta question:do you go on holidays on your own/with friends/with big groups of friends.

I prefer the idea of going with a small number of people, 5 or 6 at the very most. It eliminates the risk of finding out mates who become intolerable assholes when tired or forced to travel for any kind of lengthy time spell.

Ronan, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also beaches, classic or dud? Sun holidays versus other holidays.

Ronan, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to Glasters... ur, and that's about it :(

Although me and C____ have talked about going TRAVELLING at some point in the year but when I will be able to afford that is another thing entirely...

Sarah, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like going on holiday with enormous groups of friends. That way there's got to be someone who isn't an intolerable asshole. Also, economies of scale.

I have no summer holiday planned except for Glastonbury.

N., Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to go to Alaska but that proved to be very expensive at the times we could have gone so that is now on the back burner. No fresh plans have yet been made but I might try to go to Spain in September therefore avoiding all the grockles.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed, the more of you there are the more diluted everyone is and the better everyone gets on e.g. the groke gite holiday of 10 people was marvy. Though I did throw a hissy fit mid-ping pong cos I am crap at it and resented being forced to play / succumbing to peer group pressure to play so maybe I was the intolerable asshole of the whole holiday. Oh dear.

Emma, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not and I'm not even going to Glastonbury unless I get hold of a ticket soon :(

RickyT, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to Glastonbury and I already have my hat & daft sunglasses which were trialled for the first time today. Well I am going if our tickets arrive. If not Ptee is in trouble.

Emma, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the fear that my tickets are never going to arrive and they won't have been sent registered post and they will say they did send them and I will scream into an uncaring void.

N., Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i was supposed to be in new york at the moment, but life got in the way. so, hopefully i'll have a new york holiday a bit later on. i am going to ask a girl i know if she will come to the isle of sheppey with me (insert sarcastic "sheesh, gareth, you sure know how to show a girl a good time" comment below)

gareth, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We're kind of toying with various ideas at the moment. One of them is going to Ibiza in September, just me and one other friend. The other is going to the Czech Republic for CREAMFIELDS Czech Republic. This second idea is very tempting because tickets cost ten pounds and everything else over there is so damn cheap. Also we've been there before and boring as it may be to go to the same place two years in a row, it is a great old city is Prague.

I agree with the theory of going with ten or so mates but I don't know if there's ten of us who'd all agree on where to go. Last year I went with two other people and me and my best friend got on fine, but the other guy became an intolerable asshole who we haven't talked to since. It felt like some sick fantasy world where we were his parents. He used to moan at the restaurants we went to and all. Jesus.

Ronan, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sheesh, gareth, you sure know how to show a girl a good time!

N., Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sheesh, Gareth, you sure know how to show a girl a good time...

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

apparently drugs are legal in the Czech Republic so you should be sorted.

I'm off to Glasto as well. anyone for an IL* Glasto meetup, or will we all be at the Sinister one?

I'm also hoping to go on holiday to Lebanon in the Autumn.

and for the big group/small group/solo holiday thing - I never go on my own, nearly always holidaying with my special friend. once though a load of people I know went to New Orleans for a wedding. That was G*R*A*T*E - a big gang of people all staying in different places meeting up in the evening for BOOZE and bumping into each other in the streets during the day. RoXoR.

DV, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As Pete is going to be in Japan and thinks the tickets are coming spesh delivery I will have to stay in until the post arrives every morning while he is away so I can get them from Mr Postie. I will have to figure out how to explain my tardiness to my boss.

Emma, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Looks like Glasto is the summer. bigchill looks unlikely. and the few places i feel like seeing are bleddy expensive

One for N. perhaps: why am I fab at finding stuff on the net EXCEPT cheap plane tickets? seems everyone was on about "oo and i flew to nice for 2p" a month or so back. and now when i fancy a short break to Vienna, i find i can't do better than a couple hundred quid. nyargh.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sheesh gareth you...

Actually, this is as good an opportunity as any to ask: DAN PERRY - CAN YOU GET ME TIX FOR TANGLEWOOD THIS YEAR? Doesn't really matter what - anything that looks good. Is your better half performing?

Jeff W, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a staying in sunny old West London. If I went on holiday with 5 or 6 people, that would be all my friends!

jel --, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whats going on in glastonbury?

jel --, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

though i do consider going to norway and sweden every year. the emmaboda festival sounds cool.

jel --, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan, the thing with cheapo plane tickets is that Ryanair, Go, Buzz and Easyjet can all be like 2p a flight at times but it just depends on when they choose to run their promotions. Otherwise they're just, y'know - quite cheap.

N., Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would like to go somewhere. i have some sort of 3 month probationary period at my job where i guess i can't take off, but once that's up (13 august) i might take a week off. unfortunately since i'm on contract i can't get paid ofrmy vacation, booo hiss.

i'm planning, once my contract is up, on buying one of those 30-day train tickets and going around the us and canada.

maura, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hank and I hope to go to San Francisco at the end of the summer. If not that than to west Texas to visit Marfa and camp in Big Bend.

He just came back from a few days in Memphis where he had a blast.

S., Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone should visit me. There, simple! :-) As for my own summer trip, I've already gone on enough about that...but besides the Antipodean jaunt, I'll be in SF for a couple of days at the end of June, and we'll see what else turns up.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HONEYMOON TO BERMUDA IN SEPTEMBER.

Chris, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Winnepeg Folk Festival! I like folk music for exactly four days out of the year.

Dan I., Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually i'm pretty sure I have an invite to New York for a wedding later this year. Hmmmmmmmmm?

Alan T, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheap flights, Alan? You wanna look on Ceefax.

P. Ackedit, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Glastongbury HO!!! can i suggest that we hold an ILE meet-up OOH SAY OUTSIDE THE NEW BANDS TENT??? hmm? :)

katie, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my fave camp site is on the slope between new bands and dance tent. can be annoying as near cinema, but it always seems less crowded than other places (first two years i tried were hellish locations that i can't recall)

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can one of you lot get famous/kidnapped/fall ill and have to sell me your glasot ticket for like, 10p?

I am off to my holiday home in Rye which will be most delightful, though v.v. boring and I will probably be forced to get a job.

Graham, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Glastonbury and Barcelona. Barcelona was the compramise between those who like beaches and thos ewho like cities.

Anna, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can one of you lot get famous/kidnapped/fall ill and have to sell me your glasto ticket for like, 10p?

I'll quite happily pay £100+ for one! I'll even be Tompaulin's roadie if they'll let me.

RickyT, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Since when did anyone pay to go to Glastonbury?

badarsekiwi, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Er, since they cancelled it last year because of all the people who sneaked in without paying?

Emma, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Since they filled the inter fence gap with packs of rabid dogs.

RickyT, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to Lisbon to see Radiohead in July - the gigs are on monday and tuesday so we're going over on friday and returning on wednesday to make a holiday out of it.

Leigh, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alang, you are OTM, this is clearly the place to camp, although I've always been next to second stage before.

right who's making the big banner so we can find the tent then? does anyone have a spare sheet (NOT FITTED!) and a big collapsable pole (ooer, fnar, etc)

CarsmileSteve, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll fight you for it RickyT.

(or you could help me construct a giant catupult)

Graham, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To the fair beaches of West Michigan! I'm going home in June to see my youngest brother graduate high school. All together now: AW. Can't wait to see the open water, my mom's gardens, everything bloomy. Home Sweet Home.

Pyth, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was talking about this today. I went on hols as a kid with family; then I got together with a girl when a teenager, and we went on holiday several times over the next 23 years. I've not been outside the M25 (London orbital motorway) since we split up last summer. We had planned a holiday in Thailand and Cambodia for the Winter. I think I should make myself go off on my own, like to Paris for a few days or something, before it gets to be a big thing. But I do prefer good company, I must admit.

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 16 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Somewhere in the middle of summer--we don't know where yet--but somewhere. Plus, as is now traditional, Burning Man at the end of it.
