i can't believe that posters of that painting aren't more widely available for students.

Gukbe, Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

I think these movies represent a generational shift: younger audiences associating with Scarface's maverick, independent quest for success (much like the recent past's rockstar hedge fund managers), and Goodfellas appealing to the older crowd with its focus on kin relations

my heigl-lohan girl (who's also latina and half-jewish) (cankles), Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:44 (sixteen years ago)

J0rdan will be the bellweather for this - there's a lot of young cats for whom Scarface is almost totemic in its What We Mean When We Say "Great Movie" status. I love De Palma, but then again, I'm a guy who loves slasher movies and prefers cheap candy to expensive chocolate. People who give a shit about, y'know, good direction & scripts should vote Goodfellas. People who're drawn to I'm-gonna-carry-this-movie-on-my-back actor-as-auteur shit aren't gonna be able to resist Pacino.

close bet for me 'cause I like the operatic violence of Scarface plus love Pacino from Dog Day Afternoon through Scarface but c'mon can anybody actually make the case for Scarface as a better movie? I'm guessing "no."

J0hn D., Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

goodfellas is just a better, funnier movie, scarface has plenty goin for it but it lulls in a lot of places

my heigl-lohan girl (who's also latina and half-jewish) (cankles), Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

I have issues with Al Pacino's acting. It grates on me even more than DeNiro's acting, which also grates on me, but less gratingly. Therefore, Goodfellas, by default.

Aimless, Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

im the biggest pacino defender on this bitch and im still voting for goodfellas

s1ocki, Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

also deniro's best perf i think

s1ocki, Saturday, 7 February 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

i'll go with goodfellas.

personally, give me the '32 scarface any day. it's not on every dorm room wall, for one thing.

i dunno dom, is this even a thing? (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 7 February 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

"give me the '32 scarface any day"

OTM. The Pacino Scarface seems almost on a level with Sin City. Goodfellas is Scorsese at the top of his game.

Soukesian, Saturday, 7 February 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

"give me the '32 scarface any day"

boo, groan.

special guest stars mark bronson, Saturday, 7 February 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

C'mon!

Scorsese or DePalma?
Karen Hill or Elvira?
Paul Sorvino or Robert Loggia?

of course, in one of those Lincoln/JFK things, the protagonist in Goodfellas is arrested after visiting Miami (and avoids certain death by not going a second time) while the protagonist in Scarface begins his eventual downfall after a trip to New York.

•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Saturday, 7 February 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

it's funny, the original scarface used to be considered one of the best movies ever made in america — godard called it one of his biggest influences. it's totally vanished off everyone's radar since the remake. obviously it's not particularly shocking anymore, but in some ways it seems more contemporary and exciting and relevant (fast-paced, funny, non-preachy) than the de palma/pacino version, which lasts at least an hour too long and really isn't even a 'good' movie by any reasonable standard.

xpost yeah whatever nrq your 'old movies are boring tosh' routine is drearily familiar at this point, thanks.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Saturday, 7 February 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

Goodfellas for these reasons:

-The Edward G. Robinson version of Scarface is better
-When I saw the DePalma I didn't get any joy out of it, not even any schadenfreude. It was a self-important slog.
-While I understand J0hn's point about Pacino carrying the movie on his back, that's a problem for me: you can see him working as he spends the whole movie going I AM ACTING!!
-"Am I funny to you?"
-Save for Terminator, I hate most things set in the 80s

Somebody called me out on some other thread for hating the music in Scarface, but I remember it really annoying me when I first saw it. Whereas Goodfellas has a like three of my favorite music/film scene combinations ever - the end of Layla with the killed heist people, the coked out "Jump Into The Fire" helicopter paranoia, and the first date at the Copacabana scene with the Crystals which might be my favorite scene in any movie ever. I haven't seen Scarface in ages though.

☺♑ (joygoat), Saturday, 7 February 2009 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

Also when my friends and I invented the "Make A Dirty Wish" foundation for fulfilling the fantasies of terminally ill adults, I decided that mine would be to wear a cheesy 80's suit and shoot up a mansion with M16s and grenade launchers with occasional breaks to snort from big pile of coke.

☺♑ (joygoat), Saturday, 7 February 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

watching Scarface tonight because of this thread - I gather that the rare-air cinemaphiles won't have any of DePalma at all, but I have to say, for tone he's worthwhile. The zoom after Montana picks up Elvira in the Cadillac - she's just gotten in, he walks around the back and gets in while she's doing a line - it could as easily be Dario Argento as Brian De Palma. Which is when I like De Palma, because I love Dario Argento. The whole movie is full of long segments that build almost musically - a soft tense moment opens up into a greater tension, and then half-dissipates but not entirely - it's good work. I don't think one needs to call Scarface "a cartoon" when saying that Goodfellas is (as I think it clearly is) the better film. De Palma did something worthwhile with it, I think. Although what he didn't do - and what I think he imagined he would do - was make some great point about American government or society or culture or whatever. His strengths aren't in articulating a message. Really, a berserker De Palma who'd just embrace chaos might make great films.

J0hn D., Sunday, 8 February 2009 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

Goodfellas, in every conceivable way.

The secret to Scarface is seeing it in a theater with Giorgio Moroder's soundtrack blaring out at you. It's a great movie and berserker chaotic De Palma is a heck of a lot of fun.

Still, I voted Goodfellas in a heartbeat.
