I just had an interview

On the work theme started by S and Chris. For a different job. It went okay, but I don't think I've got it based on the fact that the woman interviewing me finished off with:

"Well we only asked seven people in out of all those we interviewed, so you've done very well to get this far."

I feel a bit relieved and a bit sick and God I need a drink.

Hooray.

Well we only asked seven people in out of all those we interviewed

Was this in some inner chamber?

Good luck, Anna, but it doesn't sound terribly promising.

One time when I knew I didn't get the job: I was 40, just graduated, a First, great placement ref etc.: the interviewer said "This is quite a young company - don't you think you'd find it difficult to fit in?"

I tried pointing out that I'd spent the last four years with young people, at university, with no problems, but I knew they weren't going to give me the job. Age discrimination is evil, etc., except I do it too and we all do, I expect.

It's definitely better than nothing to get an interview. I have my first one (after about 15 rejection letters) on Friday. I don't think I'll get it though since there is a test on something I'm not very good at. This may seem trivial but I don't know what to wear. I don't own a formal suit. Should I buy a cheap and nasty suit or wear nice average-formal clothes that I feel comfortable in?

isadora, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just had an e-mail. I didn't get it.

"Unfortunately, we have chosen another candidate who had more experience (she's actually been an editor), so I hope you're not too disappointed. The applicant pool was absolutely outstanding and you did incredibly well to get as far as you did. If you ever consider going freelance, do let me know. We'd love to have you write for us in the future."

Fair enough, at least it's a nice rejection.

Good luck Isadora. Clothes would depend on what the job is.

Yes, in interviews for jobs as stripper / lapdancer clothes are considered to be a minus.

Anna, that's a lovely rejection letter!

alix, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed it is. Years ago I had an interview at Euro Wnek Gosper and the first bloke I saw LUVVED me, he practically said he would give me the job, I was the most mature candidate he'd seen, he thought I was great & would fit in really well (with a bunch of advertising wankers, oh dear, still it was years ago), would I have his babies blah blah blah. Then the second bloke was not so keen & I got a rejection letter saying 'you would not fit in here'. Bah. Anyway a few days later I got a letter from the first bloke apologising effusively for all this & for getting my hopes up. Cursed lying advertising people.

six years pass...

I just had an interview in which I showed the interviewer some writing I'd done, discussed my CV for a bit, and then halfway through he suggested going for a pint.

Then had a chat about John Cooper Clarke and Underworld and Brian Eno.

Am v hopeful for this job.

woah! nice :D

yur twit (tehresa), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

I know, the job sounds amazing too. He said after 6 months the company would be changing from environmental expeditions to a "loose think tank". It's funded by an uber rich family.

The annoying part is that now I'll be really annoyed if I don't get it, seems a great place to work.

Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

Damn, sounds pretty great! Good luck but it already sounds like you're well over the major hurdle.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

it'll be a second round of interviews but I'm hoping I've got a good chance of that

Local Garda, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

four years pass...

so i've been interviewing with a big broadcaster lately for a role, and it kinda became apparent to me in the second interview that the role is probably a step to the side for me, and not maybe where i should be going with my career.

but it went really well and obv i decided it was no harm to try and knock it out of the park for future relationship with this company.

anyway today they rang me and asked if i want to go and meet some senior person tomorrow, which essentially sounds like a formality.

then suddenly they're discussing money and an offer - and i essentially say i think that "if this offer was made" (this is now way beyond hypothetical) i would say no as i felt the role wasn't right for me.

then i sort of said if there was a ludicrous offer (not using that word) i'd consider moving, but that essentially i felt i was over-qualified and that i'd want to be remunerated properly as a result.

i now feel sort of arrogant - like, how do you play these things? i've never had such a phonecall turn into negotiation like this, it was so odd.

is it bad to be honest in this scenario?

i was expecting email or a way to craftily spell out my position but they just forced my hand on the phone while i'm trying to do my current job

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Monday, 28 October 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

I personally would have kept my cards a bit closer to my chest on that one and waited to see what they offered. Honesty isn't terrible in this context but they might not take the risk of appointing you if there's a chance you're going to be under-utilised and considering your next move from the start.

On the other hand, your honesty could mean that they consider you for something more senior if it becomes available.

Matt DC, Monday, 28 October 2013 18:21 (twelve years ago)

Ah they did give me all the details of the offer in the end, it was an offer at this stage. I said I'd let them know tomorrow, not going to take it.
