i watched this and regular house hunters and a good chunk of HGTV before I actually found myself selling a house and suddenly those shows weren't so hilarious anymore.

still kind of love property virgins though.

i just like watching these shows so i can laugh at the spoiled americans and their real estate "needs" (honey, this walk-in closet isn't big enough)

as someone that is on the cusp of having to deal with adult problems like deciding which city to live in and where to live in said city, i can't decide which version of 'house hunters' depresses me more -- original 'house hunters', where pretty much every couple buys a crappy suburban home that they can barely afford, or 'house hunters international', where rich couples stroll around tropical paradises trying to figure out which house has the best view of the ocean

BIG SANTA aka the sleighdriver (J0rdan S.), Monday, 27 December 2010 08:55 (fifteen years ago)

south african trust fund girl in fiji episode was pretty jealous-making in a good way (she grew up in fiji i guess, cool girl, owns a dance studio, needs a bigger dance studio! pops got it covered)

tremendoid, Tuesday, 28 December 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)

The only one I've ever enjoyed was the nearly destitute couple from new orleans buying a crumbling cottage in the south of france on a sub $100K budget. They were a breath of fresh air after zillions of punchable fatasses from Orlando.

As far as the normal house hunters goes, why don't they ever set one in Oakland, that's what I want to know.

otm

i enjoy them all.i mostly hope the people make the rong choice. Cursing them as they complain because the kitchen in Budapest doesn’t have an island and two dishwashers is the best.

I miss the glory days of FLIP THAT HOUSE, etc. - yes, you too can invest your life savings in renovating a home on the off chance you can flip it for a $5k profit after fees and tax; or more likely you'll lose your ass when it sits on the market for nine months

was the A+E show flip this house or flip that house. one of them is on another channel but i can never remember which is which.

more importantly, whatever happened to the 'designer guys???'

Suzanne Whang is basically responsible for "The Secret" blowing up to the huge thing it did for a minute. Now that we don't see her around anymore, and people have generally called bullshit on "The Secret", I figure Oprah had her taken out.

Oh, and she's apparently a Scientologist?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 July 2012 09:11 (thirteen years ago)

but this, from her wiki, makes me o_O

"Whang was born in Arlington, Virginia. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Yale University and a M.Sc. degree in Cognitive Psychology from Brown University."

She holds two psych degrees and STILL believes in the power of The Secret and, if not a Scientologist, is in with them well enough to perform at a Celebrity Centre?

This woman is an enigma.

I just discovered that friends in NYC are currently filming for House Hunters domestic

they are very determinedly pulling the curtain back on the whole "the couple has already picked a place and are faking the house dilemma for the cameras" thing by posting pics of the entire filming process on Facebook, it's kind of hilarious

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 26 October 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

have they picked a place and are faking the house dilemma for the cameras?

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 October 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

yes; apparently that is SOP for how they film the show (I'd heard rumors and read a couple of "exposes" but I actually KNOW this couple and one dude is posting things like "interview at decoy house #2" on his Facebook wall, lol)

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

i'm surprised that whatever contract/agreement they sign before filming doesn't say something like "you may not pull the curtain back on the whole 'the couple has already picked a place and are faking the house dilemma for the cameras' thing"

but the boo boyz are getting to (Z S), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

it probably does but both of these guys are notorious "I don't actually give a shit" personalities, plus all of their friends already know they've purchased a place

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

the director's gonna be like "guys can i respectfully ask you again to stop saying 'we already made a decision before filming, why are we doing this?' on camera please"

but the boo boyz are getting to (Z S), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

Before moving to NYC one of these dudes lived with one of my best friends in Boston and bought the apartment they were living in out from underneath my friend within weeks of a conversation where my friend was all "if our landlord ever sells this place, I really want to make an offer on it; I love living here", in the process booting my friend out and having his boyfriend (now husband) move in; they will basically do what they want whenever they want with little thought to what ripple effect their actions may have

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

hmmm. not sure i'd want to be friends with this guy!

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

well tbh we haven't really kept in touch since that whole fiasco occurred aside from being Facebook friends

Gandalf’s Gobble Melt (DJP), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

word

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

(the other wrinkle of the story is that there's no way my actual friend was going to get a mortgage at that time in his life so it's not like he actually could have bought the place himself, but I do 100% think it was a totally dick move)

Does anyone ever "list it" on Love It or List It? Also is it possible for these hosts to die in a fire?

All I wanna do is watch HGTV lately. It is a sickness.

How many of these shows are secretly Canadian.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 7 March 2013 23:04 (twelve years ago)

i love it when they show these cities and they really awkwardly elide the actual name of the city (maybe just for united states broadcasts), and you think they're american and then you see these unfamiliar skylines and it's like a portal to a really clean looking alternate universe.
