I can't think of any possible long-term way that internet comments boxes can be held to any higher legal standard than everyday speech is, apart from the horrible idea of considering it all a form of "publishing" and leaving a whole massive field of action up to prosecutors' discretion.

This. If you ever feel too happy or too good about the world, spend 15 minutes reading the comments on any Chicago Tribune website story. Especially one that involves any minority group.

same thing with the Toronto Star. anything that has even the slightest link to politics is flooded with Conservative dito-heads blithering talking points about the Liberals. i suspect some actually work for the Cons. it's tiresome beyond words.

This seems to be the case with almost any of the newspaper sites that allow online comments. I guess it is their way of avenging themselves on the "liberal media".
