Aimless beat me to it, I was thinking the same. I guess SH is re-paying society for the centuries that rich and important people gave their kids to poor ones. Which frequently required poor people to abandon their children and abstain from sexual activity, btw, as both sharing and fucking were thought to "spoil" a woman's milk.

Beatriz at Dinner is normally not my kind of film--dinner party, closely observed, class, etc. Not Rules of the Game, not Gosford Park. I liked Miguel Arteta's The Good Girl enough to see it twice, though, and seemed like a good Sunday afternoon film. There's a pull-quote that says it's the first great film of the Trump era; that intrigued me.

Thought the first half was strong--you could see exactly where it was going, but I settled into its rhythm and liked all the performances, especially Lithgow and Connie Britton. (Hayek has to be soulful sometimes and glare the rest of the time; she does both pretty well.) One really great moment (repeated later to lesser effect): when Hayek looks at Lithgow the first time they meet and says, "Do I know you? I know you..." Great in the Naughty by Nature yeah-you-know-me sense, and another reminder of something that's been said countless times: Trump is as old as time.

Gets a little heavy-handed after that, and in a way goes off the rails in the last 10 minutes. Would still recommend it, though. I imagine Lithgow will be up for lots of awards at the end of the year.

I'm surprised the film hasn't caused a commotion, unless I've missed it. It may stop short of advocating for the murder of Trump, but at the very least it kind of puts the idea out there, Taxi Driver-style, for someone who takes the film to heart.

Didn't know that. They got China-Syndrome lucky--Lithgow's character is so clearly going to be read as a stand-in for Trump.

Lithgow does have an easy role, no doubt. I think the Hayek character is reduced to the two sides I mentioned above--saintly on the one hand, hateful towards Lithgow on the other--but she does fine. The hugging bit was really funny.

p sure his character was inspired by the dentist guy who shot cecil the lion
