It's summer. You have two weeks off. Why not go to the end of the world! Why do you travel? Why do you need to jump on that plane? Why do you need to take a million pictures?

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I travel for food and a new look out of my bedroom window and finding obscure corners of huge cities.

anthony, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Because it's fun.

Ally, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To escape the cops

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't travel cos i don't have the money nor do i remember what a holiday is - when i did have some cash and plane tickets, it was travelling back to argenitna to see my host family/fall in love/start a new novel/question my (in)sanity.

Geoff, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

At a guess, because some of us want to experience more of the world than we already know.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just want to be somewhere where being removed from my current situation will help me forget and take my mind off my current situation, if only temporarily.

Nicole, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But to escape your current situation, you put yourself through so much trouble (nerves, spending loads of money,...) just to be in this state where you're surrounded by a million people (all with the same Lonely Planet/Capitol Guides) and having the same *unique* experiences... not.
Mike, why? I bet it was a sexual misdemeanor. ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Love impels me towards my current travels. So hey. :-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I always am amazed how people can just move away to another country and adapt to that culture. Doesn't it make you nervous, Ned?

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"travel broadens the mind, but restricts the imagination"...I don't travel much, hate flying for a start. Have no real desire to start seeing the world, maybe one day, I'd like to go to Sweden, or anywhere like that. Perhaps, I do want to travel...should give it more thought.

jel, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
I take loads of pictures, on holiday or not. The thing is, I only take pictures of like the same 4 people. So I look like I only have 4 friends, plus myself. I can be at a party with 80 people, and I'll only take pictures of the same people I always take pictures of. What's that about? I went to Boston, took LOTS of film. Two were of tourist things. There was one of Dan and Joei. Like three of Otis. AND 347 PICTURES OF RAMON AND STEPHANIE. I mean, wtf? I go to work parties. I have a pretty big office. I end up with a couple of group pictures and an entire roll of Manon, Vanessa, and Joe. It's not like I don't like these other people.

Weirder - when I visit my parents on holiday I just take pictures of the cats. I mean, I could take pictures of my sisters or my high school friends, but instead I get 50 pictures of Siamese cats.

This is why I shouldn't be allowed to travel with people, because I'll come back with no pictures of the sites or people I meet or anything like that, I'll just come back with packets of pictures of one of the group sitting in the hotel room.

Ally, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i want to see what joei looks like

anthony, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We didn't book a hotel for our holiday till we got to Prague Airport, we didn't book our train to France till the morning we had to leave the Hotel, so when I say on the first day of our holiday we said we'd get some disposable cameras you can see what happened. On the way home thinking, shit, I knew we should have brought them with us. I need to travel because I go fucking insane in Dublin all year, especially if some of my best friends are going away, and I'm left with the ones who think alcohol is the tool of the devil. This is what happened this year and I can tell you I was dying to go on holidays by the time they came around.

Ronan, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three years pass...
I realised, a couple of days back, I really regret not going anywhere. It'd be great to go travelling, I can't let a poxy fear get the better of me. So, if you have the chance you should go places, I should too. Okay, better order that self-hypnosis subliminal conquer your fear of flying CD of Amazon, and stop googling for information about boats.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone catch andy rooney a few weeks ago when he whined that people travel too much and why can't we all just stay home?

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/03/23/60minutes/rooney/main682567.shtml

jel -- (jel), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess there is the whole issue of the un-greeness of flying. I would feel bad about that, but I'd feel worse for staying home. Okay, back to raft building.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Traveling clears my mind like nothing else. Even if I'm just doing the same stuff I'd do at home - going record-shopping, etc. - I love being in a new city. Just the small things, like different street signs and different regional brands in the convenience stores, etc.

mike a, Monday, 25 April 2005 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno. i get the travel bug. but i cant go for just 2 weeks. it has to be like 6 months at a time. next time i want to go with a friend because i can't stand 99% of the people i meet in hostels. does anyone want to come with me? to central asia. or west africa?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

jel you don't drive right? So you taking a few flights a year is still probably doing less damage than someone who uses a car every day (that's how I validate it for me anyway!). I still get really anxious about flying but realised I just had to get on with it and if I had the opportunity/created the opportunity for myself to see the world I had to do it and my life would be rubbish otherwise, so I urge you to do it.

I'm not sure how long I'd want to travel alone though - if there were people I knew at the other end then it would be okay, but going somewhere alone and being on your own the whole time doesn't appeal to me enough right now tho maybe it will more in due course.

It's just too frustrating to have all those wonderful sights out there and not be able to see them. Of course you can argue that ultimately many cities aren't so different from each other but it's still good to escape your own rut for a while now and then.

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a sucker for traveling in general. I mean, I can't say I was as excited about Wall, SD as my first trips to London or San Francisco...but it wasn't too far off.

mike a, Monday, 25 April 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure how long I'd want to travel alone though

i went 6 months on my own, then 9 months on my own. its actually nice. you make your own decisions and don't have to worry about appeasing someone else. if today you decide you want to sit at a cafe all day instead of going to another museum, no one will get mad at you. or if you want to take the bus to kazakhstan and your friend wants to fly to dubai, those conflicts wont happen! and then when you're alone, it forces you to interact with the locals more, which is good i guess. also, you'd get really sick of the person you're traveling with after awhile, or find out that you actually hate them

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

true phil, like i say i think travelling alone is fine but to be able to meet people at your destinations is key for me (also helps re accommodation ;).

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

you dog.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

also for jel re flying:

- Statistically the safest form of travel
- Getting above the clouds and landing really are fantastic experiences - I love the descent esp. as the things on the ground beneath you get nearer and bigger.
- Turbulence is normal and not even as dangerous as cars driving over v bumpy roads - even sudden drops of big number of feet and the plane can deal (this would def. freak me out a bit but i guess you could pretend it's a rollercoaster if this does happen - seems pretty rare anyway)
- not even lighting striking a plane can knock it out of the sky, and planes can cope with more than one engine failing even - obv. again these are rare scenarios.

the worst thing about flying for me is the ear pains i get from de-pressurisation in the plane - I have to do a hell of a lot of sweet-sucking to combat this. i can never seem to relax properly on planes either, to even read let alone sleep - but the best solution to this is to fly more often and get used to it i figure. the other thing to worry about is who you might end up sitting next to, in front of, behind or nearby - screaming kids, enormous people taking up more space than their seat provides, drunken loudmouths etc. - but so far my experiences have been good and i'm hoping that continues on Wednesday (if not I will get the stewardess to knock me out for most of the flight via blows to the head or maybe just a max strength sedative, wuh-hoo).

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

phil otm re traveling on your own.

my friend flicka (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

All good things to remember, Steve. I try to remind myself of all of this before every longer flight I take, as my anxiety about flying has gotten worse over the last few years. It's still not enough to keep me from traveling, as that's one of my absolutely favorite things to do. I just have to make sure I can plan long enough trips so that my worries about the flight back don't overshadow the time I'm away. (I know, I'm neurotic...)

xpost

the krza (krza), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

All logic cannot tame my nerves about flying overseas.
Joey Ramone was right.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, I totally don't drive Steve! Good points. Thanks dude.

I guess I need to be more Spock-esque about flying.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing about travelling, pure travelling, going between point A and point B, is that you are in a situation where you have almost none of the responsibilities of everyday life.

This is less true if you are on a plane, I think.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the more Andy Rooney convinces people to stay home, the better.

Also, phil totally OTM

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

Okay. I have the bug. I want to be able to go somewhere, travel around and hopefully do a bit of work here and there while I'm at it. I'm not rich, in fact I have a lot of debt but I wnat to havve cleared it and be off by the autumn.

I'm crap at knowing where to start - can anyone give me any hints/tips/dummies guides as far as locations/schemes/agencies or whatever might be a good idea to get started. Thinking of Eastern Europe, but then anywhere might be cool.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

Is Ned still doing the LDR thing?

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

i'm thinking of going round a few places (France/Swi/Ger/Aut/Ita) by coach over 3 weeks or so this Summer. Busabout have a service you can hop on and off at various cities and they . Also tempted by the Croatian island hopping option they offer.

They have an Eastern European version too - http://www.easterntrekker.com/

blueski, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Is Ned still doing the LDR thing?

Said LDR ended later in 2001. Travelling continues unabated (up in the next few months, SF, Seattle and various spots out East -- and I'd love to get back to Australia and New Zealand).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

prob going to butan & india in the fall

california and colorado likely before then

jhøshea, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

Grozart - the most surefire way of getting work abroad is to do a tefl qualification, though make sure it's CELTA rather than some micky mouse knock off. You can do an intensive course in four weeks, though it does cost about a grand.

Having spent much of last summer travelling round Eastern Europe (not working, just looking at shit and getting drunk), I can strongly recommend it, and now is the time to go before the encroachment of the EU has too much of a homogenising effect. It's still pretty darn cheap to travel round the region, you can make do on £20 a day very comfortably (less in some countries). I started in Estonia and worked my way down to Bulgaria, with a loop around the Balkan states, over two and half months and it was one of the most fun summers of my life.

chap, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

I never travel, and when I do, I overpack. I think it's because I'm mildly obsessed with having the right "tool" for the "job", even when the job is certain kind of activity/night out. Not good at the flexibility of mind required for healthy travel, I don't think.

Laurel, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

I really enjoy travelling but it's awfully expensive for what it is, especially now with the weak dollar (in some places, anyway). I'm already blowing my travel budget for the year on flying to Israel at the most expensive time of year (the only time we could go, and we have to see the wife's family who couldn't come to the wedding. If I do it again anytime soon, I'd like to go to the further reaches of Mexico or maybe Peru. Speaking the language makes travelling a lot more fun, and my Spanish is good enough to get by.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

) goes in there somewhere

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

any other resources/sites/institutions to help out idiot trvel-wannabes

Steve, I will check that eastern trekking site, cheers

the next grozart, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

i like going places w/o really knowing anything abt them or being properly prepared

fun!

jhøshea, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

hate flying; love traveling. i overpack, but i'm better than i used to be. when i was younger i always packed too much stuff, and really silly stuff at that.

lauren, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

a few years ago i went to south east asia for a month w/just a day pack (not one of those lol hueg frame backpacks)

its really hot there tho so you dont need too many clothes

jhøshea, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

I will so pack for you guys. Once, I went to stay with my friend in London for 9 days and all I had was a big messenger bag. She was shocked. My new pack is awesome and super light, and I have everything i need for over a month of travel.

Yerac, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't been anywhere new, that wasn't for work, for ages. What I wouldn't give for three months to just disappear, overland, in an eastward direction.

Ed, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

I could travel without my big pack (although it is only midsize) but I have to always end up buying so much stuff. I totally do the 2-3 pairs of travel underwear for month long trips.

Yerac, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

i get these lightning flashes of insanity when i pack. like, "what if i need to change shoes 4 times in one day? better safe than sorry." i've finally figured out a system to keep myself under control, but it took years.

lauren, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

I can't do it. Being able to change my look every day makes me happy, and traveling is too hard on vintage accessories.

Laurel, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I am an overpacker, but am getting better at it. Shoes are problematic.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

My new pack is awesome and super light

I just got a good new one for Xmas and will be testing it out properly here in a couple of days. Looks like it'll be just what I need for weeklong trips at least.

Another big thing for me is going to be the iPhone -- I never really wanted a laptop for travel, too big to readily haul around along with everything else. (I realize this is a matter of personal perspective.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

Recent trips have been overburdened by the 'need' to bring bike pedals/shoes/tools. Bulky Jumpers in the winter is another thing I take too many of. (Also, two checked bags allowance to north america does not encourage being lean).

Ed, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

Underpacking >>>>>> overpacking. They have shops in foriegn countries.

chap, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

OTM.

Especially in hot countries, what do you need more than a clean change of clothes? You can wash them every night and have them dry by morning.

Ed, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, that's what i want to do on vacation. laundry.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

If I'm not traveling, I'm not living. End of story.

This site is pretty worthwhile: http://www.onebag.com/
