This photo series by Joao Batista appears to be making the rounds on Facebook, but you can also see the whole thing here. Fascinating visual comparison of food expenditures from Germany and the U.S. to Chad and Bhutan (and six others).

so did the US family bring the Burger King home? it would be hard to show food you've eaten at restaurants
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 13:53 (seventeen years ago)
Ok, I've just made a quick estimation and I spend on food/drinks (not counting restaurants/big nights out) weekly the equivalent of 4.25 years of what the 6 members family spends in Tchad. alone ! (and I don't even eat much)of course, you always know there's this kind of amazingly disturbing fact going on. still, it's mindblowing...

I was surprised when I learned that Mexico consumes the most coca-cola per capita in the world.
― mizzell, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 15:15 (seventeen years ago)
to be fair they also seem to have more fruit in their pile than anyone else
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 15:16 (seventeen years ago)
they also elected a former coke executive president.
― mizzell, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 15:18 (seventeen years ago)
but yeah, fruit is everywhere in mexico.
― mizzell, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 15:19 (seventeen years ago)
thanks for posting this. saw it awhile ago and was amazed at the american family and their lack of veggies/fruit. wtf.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 15:45 (seventeen years ago)
the local food co-op had big posters of all these around the store for a while, I was blown away by the gallons of Mexican coke and the total pre-packagedness of all the American stuff.
― Easter Time / Chocolate Time (joygoat), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
is there only one family per country in the book?
― O Supermanchiros (blueski), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 16:08 (seventeen years ago)
You haven't had a visit from him yet? He's actually photographing EVERY SINGLE family in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD.

Great Britain: The Bainton family of Cllingbourne Ducis
Food expenditure for one week: 155.54 British Pounds or $253.15Favorite foods: avocado, mayonnaise sandwich, prawn cocktail, chocolate fudge cake with cream
is this common in GB?
― nm (rent), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 16:45 (seventeen years ago)
Salad cream sandwiches maybe. I think they're frenchies in disguise.

I have no idea where they came from, the were only up for a couple of weeks late last year. It looked like some hippie food co-op promo type thing though.
― Easter Time / Chocolate Time (joygoat), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 18:59 (seventeen years ago)
God damn it Brits and African Americans, you're killing yourselves!
And two separate families (Northern Canada and Greenland) listed POLAR BEAR as one of their favorite foods!

LOL at the Aus one being all bacon, eggs, mince, more mince. They picked a remote outback family tho so things like the vats of water are not something city people in Aus would buy at all. There'd be as much meat. But more booze.
― one art, please (Trayce), Thursday, 19 February 2009 05:33 (seventeen years ago)
the aussie one is pretty close to what i eat (albeit with no fish fingers and grainy bread), though obviously a lot less than presented there
― juicy sweet are (electricsound), Thursday, 19 February 2009 05:53 (seventeen years ago)
Corn Flakes, Sultana Bran, Weet-bix... Winnie blues and Longbeaches, and some Tarax soft drink. Doesn't get much more Aussie, eh?
― Bored of Canada (S-), Thursday, 19 February 2009 07:00 (seventeen years ago)
Refuse to believe that's a real Sicilian family as there appears to be no Nutella on the table.
― Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Thursday, 19 February 2009 11:00 (seventeen years ago)
British one looks about right, except for full fat milk - the only person I know who buys that is my mother for her cat - and that's about 500ml a week.
German's ftw.
― Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 19 February 2009 11:11 (seventeen years ago)
Except there's no fish in the German photo? Got to have some fish.
― Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 19 February 2009 11:14 (seventeen years ago)
sultana bran wtf? the middle eastern ones look best overall (turkey, egypt, and kuwait were there i think)

tempted to photograph a 'display' of our next grocery shopping haul, just to see what it looks like all laid out.
― just1n3, Thursday, 19 February 2009 16:05 (seventeen years ago)
My mom photographs all the food she bought when she got a wicked good deal on it. "I spent $37 on this table full of food!" She lives for grocery deals.
