I thought this had been done but it doesn't look like it.

So, I've been out here with a few minidiscs and a radio that picks up the world service, the music has been largely crap (Jazzmatazz last night being the biggest case in point) apart from John Peel on Thursday. But the news coverage is excellent, I have heard about the big events (Dutch election, Indian Heatwave etc) but also great little snippets such as the story about free bicycles and the inherent problems of such a scheme in Vienna. Do you ever listen to it? What do you think?

Then of course there's voice of America which would be ok except they speak veeeeeeeerrrry veeeeeeeeerrrryyy slooooooooowwwwwlllly.

Unfortunately I thought I was listening to it the other day when all of a sudden they started with the God bothering nonsense, and all of a sudden I realised that I had, for the last hour been listening to world seventh day adventist radio or somesuch shite!!

I listen to it daily, the depth of its coverage is second-to-none. The music programmes I could largely do without (except Peel), and its soap 'Westway' is a touch worthy, but the news programmes are informative and uniformly excellent. And then there's the wierd and wonderful eg a piece on the mysterious flora surrounding deep-sea volcanoes.

A national treasure, its available on FM in Berlin and I gather the Dalai Lama is a big fan.

I wish it was on FM here, I can get it on shortwave but the signal is patchy amd I have to keep re-tuning it every hour or so.

I haven't heard Westway yet, it's something tolook forward to ;-)

It's available on the web here.

BBC World Service- Westway

You can now listen to it on-line chris. Its set in a busy inner-city London health centre and explores a lot of 'contemporary issues' eg racism, sexuality, health concerns, asylum seekers, illegal immigration, women forced into prostituion.

To-be-fair its well acted and written but despite sharing its liberal- left approach to the issues it tackles, dissenting voices are a touch too easily dismissed, straw-targeted and caricatured.

I can identify with that, Cabbage - When I was living in Rome a while back I became rather attached to the Vatican's radio station, which was broadcast (at least some of the time) in English. It took a hell of a lot of programmes about Nuns before I realised exactly *what* I'd been listening to.

I listen to it sometimes. I used to like that station ident string piece that got played just before the news. The old version sounded like it was recorded c.1950 and was especially evocative if listened to on am. Like all these things it's been needlessly replaced by a new version which, apart from being too squeaky-clean, has far less bounce.

What next? a re-recording of the shipping forecast music - that really would be the end.

My favourite World Service programmes are:

News Hour - sixty minutes of news, views and analysis from around the globe.

Outlook

From Our Own Correspondent

Letter From America

Off the Shelf, especially Frankenstein and a dead scary Ian McEwan book. I particularly enjoy the cliffhanger endings to each episode, made all the more compelling by the certainty that I will miss tomorrow's episode.

I fucking hate Health Matters

I dig the Westway theme music

There was a very good series of the Pet Shop Boys playing their favourite records with humourous asides

UK Chart rundown always thrilling

Current affairs chatshow Koffi Annan's Coffee Morning is good but it can never replace the much-missed variety show Boutros Boutros Ghali's Ghoulish Gala.

Sister Disco, Sunday, 19 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Listen to it every night. In New York, its only on FM between 1-6 AM. Tis the only way to keep up with the latest form of mass destruction, when the American newscasts only want to give you their side....

Love Peel on Thursdays! The mix of old-time (1930's, on) and newer (current) music keeps it interesting.

That Prince Harry/Obama thing was fucking excruciating. The usual tedious succession of blandishments + hollow platitudes from the ex-pres of the free world, and that fucking clueless dim cunt talking about how "we can all make a difference". Seriously, I was almost on suicide watch this morning, but the total hatred this stirred up in me gave me the succour to go on living for another day. Then afterwards lots of Royal analists talking about how radical and fantastic Harry is, "but he doesn't get drawn into politics".

I think you are overestimating the reach of the snoopers here somewhat, and if I end up on a list - well so be it!

I have been getting addicted to Phillipe Sands' The Ratline this week. A very composed investigation into the mysterious death of the completely unsympathetic Austrian Nazi Otto von Wächter (who was Nazi governor of Lvov when Sands' paternal grandad's family all got murdered there). The whole series is up on i-player now and it's brilliant despite having Stephen Fry voicing his dairies in parts. There is a starling bit where he notes in the year of 2017 his interviewee with troubling familial Nazi connections still has a Hitler pic on his bookshelf.

That map looks cool Tracer, will check it next time I'm on the computer.

Xp

I've been listening to that prog. Really good. Bit chilling hearing his friend (?) still chuckling about how he evaded his would be captors.

The US "Persilschein"-ing of Nazis guilty of genocide is interesting/horrifying as well.
