Cats vs. Dogs -- FITE!

"FITE" is an exaggeration; I'm not fond of dogs because I grew up with cats, and thus am acclimatized to the ways of the feline. Intelligent discussions for or against either kind of pet are welcome.

It is kind of cute how you can talk to a dog and he'll immediately start wagging his tail so hard he nearly tips over. On the other hand, cats don't bark their heads off just because squirrels are running around outside.

I used to quite like cats. Now I hate both of them, but dogs are far worse because they're noisier, dirtier (hair everywhere) and just plain disgusting (snacking on shit and vomit when the opportunity presents itself). Also dog owners need to be educated about cleaning up after their animals. It is widely accepted that you should 'poop 'n' scoop' if in the park, so why not on the street as well? Some parts of London are a nightmare for this.

David, Saturday, 18 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like both kinds of beasties very much, though we grew up as a dog household and so I am used to their ways. Cats are wonderful animals, and I only wish I wasn't so allergic to them as I am.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 18 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't much care for either. Cats make me sneeze, and are smelly. Dogs don't make me sneeze, but they are even smellier. Thee one possible exception would be a Great Dane. This guy who lives near us has one and it looks really cool. It would be nice to have a pet animal that could rend your enemies to gobbets and tear them to tatters asunder ((c) the "celtick dragon myth") my house is too small for such a creature though. People who are very into cats or dogs sometimes seem completely barmy.

Who took you out for walks, Ned?

I used to hate cats. Then I realized the problem was that I equated them with dogs. They should be approached differently. With a sledgehammer.... ;-)

cuba libre (nathalie), Saturday, 18 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Grew up with both cats and dogs as pets, so I like them both the same.

Ruff ruff.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 18 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer cats, for all the cliched reasons - the elegance and beauty, the sense that they're independent creatures who will move out if they're not happy here, all that stuff. The distinction is recognised in law (is this just the UK?): dogs have owners with licenses, but cats do not. If you run over a dog, you are expected to notify the owner - the dog should have a tag telling you who that is. No such thing with cats.

I don't know if the notion of a cat-person and a dog-person is local. People identify themselves this way on the basis of this preference: distrust such people!

Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 18 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cats with dog-like tendencies (large, will play-fight without shredding your hand, look you in the eye, know and respond to their name) = classic.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dogs have one virtue: they make their owners go for evening strolls. Other than that they are dumb, loud, slobbery and stinky.

Cats have two virtues: they kill mice and they kill spiders. Also, they are cute, furry, cuddly, affectionate, quite, beautiful, graceful, sharp, inquisitive, spikey, funny, evil, silly, clever, warm, mysterious, clean, soft, elegant, fast, they smell good and they can purr.

Cats win hands down.

I suppose it's too late to make a doggystyle joke at Ned's expense...

I thought they abolished the dog licence in about 1987, Martin?

N., Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am beginning to sense an incipient meme that disturbs my tender soul, it does.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole and I are a meme! Yay!

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Help help!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Very possible Ned, I have not a clue. Nonetheless, dogs still have owners who are responsible for their behaviour and all that, and cats don't. There is a legal distinction still.

Oh my god, the cuteness! I have to go be sick now.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Saturday, 26 August 2006 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

Sure, for now. Two years later, the puppy recognizes his old playmate, gives a play bow and grabs the lion's tail, then is quickly eviscerated and eaten.

Sorry to be such a bringdown.

The lion cub looks like it could kick the puppy's ass right now if it wanted - look at those teeth.

milo z (mlp), Saturday, 26 August 2006 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

What kinda lion look is that?

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 26 August 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

It's the "Who me? Someone ELSE must have eviscerated the puppy" look.

That looks like the same kind of dog. Coincidence?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 27 August 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think more than the same kind of dog.

Oh, duh. Same kind of blonde woman, too!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 27 August 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

You have to feed your lion cub the same breed every time, that's how they learn to identify prey.

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 27 August 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

If you grind up the dog and feed it to the lion, the lion will know to play nice with all dogs in the future.

Danny Aioli (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 27 August 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

On the one hand, it's cute. On the other hand, that dog is going to need a lot of retraining before it can play with other dogs without being accused of bullying.

This cat is totally awesome:

Bus drivers have nicknamed a white cat Macavity after it has started using the No 331 several mornings a week.

The feline, which has a purple collar, gets onto the busy Walsall to Wolverhampton bus at the same stop most mornings - he then jumps off at the next stop 400m down the road, near a fish and chip shop.

I'm very glad he's not taking his own car and burning up valuable natural resources.

Oilyrags, Monday, 9 April 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

I know a cat named Macavity.

We are now running an animal refuge center. The lack of sleep and disease is making me want to run a poker through my head.

This is Maggie. She sleeps with her head on my Dad's shoes if he's not home/upstairs because she misses him! Instead of baby fever, I have dog fever - I want one so very much. I'm just not home enough. It wouldn't be fair.

ENBB, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

She is fantastic!

God, I love all pets so much.* How the hell could I pick a favorite?

*Except the foul, noisome chihuahua.

eleven months pass...

My dog just ate a huge cicada that has been sunning itself out on the deck. I saw its legs wiggling before i heard CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH. So gross. So the cats are winning today. Well, until one of them pukes on my shoes again which is only a matter of time.

Bright Future (sunny successor), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)
