February 25th:
Philip José Farmer passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning.

He will be missed greatly by his wife Bette, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and countless fans around the world.

January 26, 1918 - February 25, 2009. R.I.P.

We love you Phil.

Occasionally bonkers, oversexed, and trashy fun - usually all at once. Maybe if Vonnegut was a 1930s pulp writer.

For the Venus on the Half Shell scam alone, classic.

Aw man, RIP. LOVED his stuff for a few years during high school/college. I had about 60 of his books and another 20 short story collections with his work.

RIP.

Someone I usually enjoy in anthologies, but I don't know if I've read any novels by him--suggestions?

RIP, man - to your scattered bodies go

They don’t understand. And I eat a lot of matzo brie. (contenderizer), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

Can't go wrong with the first three Riverworld novels.

Always liked The Other Log of Phileas Fogg too, which is basically where the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen came from

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

The Dark Design was so long that it was split in two, so the original Riverworld story was a quartet that included The Magic Labyrinth. It does kind of fall apart by the end, though, so start with the first two and see if you're still interested.

Dude won me $150 in a 'book collecting contest' sponsored by the English Dept at my university.

Farmer POX:

1. Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life
2. "Riders of the Purple Wage" - from Ellison's Dangerous Visions
3. To Your Scattered Bodies Go
4. Strange Relations
5. "The Jungle Rot Kid on the Nod" -- hilarious as I recall, though it may be badly dated as I haven't read it in a long time. Basic premise: "what if the Tarzan novels were written by Wm. Burroughs instead of Edgar Rice Burroughs?"
6. Image of the Beast/Blown
7. Venus on the Half-Shell
8. Flesh
9. The Book of PJF (1973) - very strong short story collection as I recall
10. A Feast Unknown

i read the weird series of books with the famous people as characters when i was in middle school and loved it. RIP. what was that series?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

RIP - by chance, before I heard this, I came across a cover for a book called "Philip José Farmer conquiert l'univers " online today, and thought "damn right!"

He has a sure and terrific grasp of the pure fun of adventurous pulp fiction. Classic moment: "what happens if you turn a matter transporter on and CHUCK IT IN THE SEA?" From the "World of Tiers" series. The Doc Savage book is nuts - reads like what it is: the work of someone who has read the entire series on one jag.

i think to your scattered bodies and the kilgore trout book are the only two i've read. (didn't know the latter was by him for years.) scattered bodies is cool, i always meant to read more of the riverworld books.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

n/a, that's riverworld. my favorite is the stone god awakens. so drugged out and psychedelic. starts out with a scientist waking up 10,000 after an accident gone bad, into a future primitive jack vance dying earth scenario. he has to defeat a giant tree to set things right, with only the help of a flying gollum-esque imp and a tribal babe. it makes not a lot of sense and is way better for that. r.i.p. pjf

WmC, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

Never knew this

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

! That's kinda crazy!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

Pioneer of meta-sci-fi, the retcon, deep continuity, fan-fiction as fiction...all things we love and hate and take for granted in modern comics.

bummer, RIP

I agree with the POX above, Image Of The Beast is still on my bookshelf and has some really unforgettable, um, images.

Also really love Riverworld.

Bit of a late LA Times obit but hey.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone else read that shared world six volume series The Dungeon that he edited? I lapped that up when I was 12 or so, looking back I reckon it was supremely trashy.

chap, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

I hunted down that Dungeon series for completeness in my Charles De Lint collection. I suppose now would be a good time to finally read it.

"Henry Miller Dawn Patrol" was always a favorite short story.
