Another splendid example of warped British justice.
I'm not saying that he should have been texting while driving but he had stopped texting two minutes before the accident.
The guy who was hit was pissed and lost control of his car.
So obviously it was all Lord Ahmed's fault.
The police and meejah do love their peers and celebrities.

Yesterday, it was all confusion.
LAh's brief was all sulky "he should not have received a jail sentence"The victim's family was all "he got off lightly"
The genpop would have the impression of "he drove into a stationary car parked on the hard shoulder, because he was texting like a mother and swerving around madly"
.. unless they read past the headline.
FWIW, I do think he got off lightly: If there's an obstruction on the road, you do not drive into it if you are paying due attention.
Someone died. OK, they were drunk driving, this doesn't exonerate LAhmed. The victim could have had some sort of breakdown in the fast lane.
Anyway, that's it.

.. I don't think he should have got years, but 2 weeks? Hmm....

All well and good, but if he hadn't been a Labour Muslim peer he'd have got a £300 fine, six months suspended and we'd never have heard.
Where's Stevie Wonder's 1984 classic "Don't Drive Drunk" when you need it?

The British media having the audacity to report it when British politicians drive into people and kill them. It's a fucking outrage.
― David Bentley: Rhythm Ace (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 February 2009 10:07 (seventeen years ago)
If he was texting at 70 mph as the report says, presumably he'd have to look down at the screen to what he was writing which would take 2 or 3 seconds, in that times he's travelled 200-300 feet without looking. Having done enough motorway driving I can do without drivers like that on the road.

He'd been driving for three miles after his last text.
It's all because he's a Lord and it's quite ridiculous.
If Mr Gombar hadn't got pissed and driven his car, thereby losing control of it, he'd still be alive.
Responsibility works both ways.

Well the irresponsible Mr Gombar is dead, so that's him dealt with

A district judge in a magistrates' court had, nevertheless, committed the case to Sheffield Crown Court because he felt that his sentencing powers - up to six months in jail - were insufficient.
he got 6 weeks, dunno where I got 2 weeks from.

Guy wasn't driven into because he was drunk, it was because he was there.

I hope that when Mugabe is elected he keeps Lord Ahmed as a peer.

Mr Justice Wilkie told Ahmed that he accepted there was “no causal link” between his texting and the accident. “The sentence does not reflect your involvement in that fatality,” he said, but emphasised that it was “of the greatest importance that people realise what a serious offence dangerous driving of this type is”. He added: “By reason of the prolonged, deliberate, repeated and highly dangerous driving for which you have pleaded guilty, only an immediate custodial sentence can be justified.”

Translation: you are not to blame but I'm going to make an example of you anyway because you are a celebrity and I'm going to put you in jail, ooh where's my Kleenex I think I'm going to come...

At the same time, less than two miles ahead, Mr Gombar lost control of his Audi and hit the central reservation, spinning 180 degrees and coming to a halt, facing north and straddling the middle and outside lanes.
Mr Gombar, who had been drinking, made his way to the hard shoulder, but decided to go back to the wrecked car to collect his mobile phone. It was dark, there was no motorway lighting and police later concluded that it would have been almost impossible for an approaching motorist to see the stranded vehicle until the last moment.
He was there because he was either drunk, or a complete idiot, or both.

The fact that there was an accident and the driver died is in some respects irrelevant to the case, other than without the accident his other crime, which is what he's being jailed for wouldn't have came to light.
