When Gmail chat was first introduced a few years ago, it was kind of fun to play with changing the status. But now I just read my Gmail off RSS feed and use Facebook for chatting and status updates.

i usually update it when someone calls attention to it by going 'huh?' and i realize it's a week old and irrelevant.

In the 3 or so years I've had gmail account, I've never used googlechat. Don't even know anyone else with a gmail account!

Maybe RSS feed is the wrong term for it. It's the Gmail widget on iGoogle. You can reply, forward, delete, and compose a new message without actually going into Gmail. Sometimes I do need to go into the full Gmail if I want to include attachments or search in my mail, but that's usually no more than once a day.

Don't even know anyone else with a gmail account!

Mine's synced with iTunes, so my status is always the song I'm listening to. The whole world knows I am in a Stereolab mood today.

I'm not listening to any music but I've had stereolab songs/their general sound stuck in my head all day

I never change my status either, and am constantly frustrated by one friend who doesn't change her status, so maybe I should change mine. 99% of the time if I am using Gchat it is to send a link to my boyfriend who is usually sitting behind me at his computer. Lame.

iChat and Adium both do it. I don't know what you'd use on Windows, but there's probably a way.
