You're asking this on a message board where people can use opaque pseudonyms?

snoball, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

i'm that type that people are like OH BUT YOU'RE SO GOOD AT THAT

but sometimes it's hard!

Surmounter, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

i find it tough sometimes. i tend towards believing i have enough friends and any more would be too much hassle.

How many times have we done the introvert/extravert dichotomy on ILX?

Being good or not being good at socialising isn't some total failing, it's a fundamental personality trait.

I used to be very sociable, couldn't wait to get out and be in company somewhere. Now I have to be dragged out of the house and my wife has to say "but you like these people!" when I start to make excuses to try and stay home.

I don't mind socializing, but I'm just too lazy. When I'm out it's fine and I enjoy myself, but when I've got a 6-pack of monster munch and a stack of DVDs, why bother?

NotEnough, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

that whole thing seems like a vicious circle. you become bored of your friends or the perceived limitations of your social circle so involve yourself less. this in turn makes you seem more boring to others.

tuomasters at work (blueski), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

i mean as a different thing to just wanting to stay in and have healthy amount of personal time

If anything, it's NOT socializing that I find difficult.

* being in a group of large people, and it's loud and I think my hearing is messed up, coz I can't follow conversations.

jel --, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

i am kind of neurotic but never about this... i find it easy

s1ocki, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

xpost hearing!

i have that problem with loud places, my hearing isn't top notch so i/other people get bored after the 5th or 6th "pardon say again?"

i wonder if anyone has done a study ever of hearing prowess vs sociability.

\∫Öζ/.... argh oh noes! (ken c), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

obv it won't boil down to one thing but there's probably some correlation

\∫Öζ/.... argh oh noes! (ken c), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

jel otm!! i can't follow group conversations AT ALL.

i'm finding out just how bad i am at socializing all the time. trying to get better at it, but it's hard (there are so many ingrained habits/thoughts i have to just GET OVER). i'm ok at doing a one-on-one conversation but once two or more people are involved i tend to shut down...

My carpal tunnel is too bad to go "all over." (Matt P), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:28 (sixteen years ago)

partly for me is that english isn't my first language so normally it's fine but singling out a conversation from others/excessive background noise is never very natural for me (i think i'm better in cantonese in that respect even though i don't actually speak as well).

\∫Öζ/.... argh oh noes! (ken c), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)

yes ken c it's like how much better would i be at this if i could actually hear wtf people are saying and not have to either ask for a repeat or pretend like i'm following along.

x-post that's cool, i only speak english so i kind of have no excuses. i was finally worried enough abt it to take a hearing test but i did really well on it, so...?

I think basically I have knackered my hearing just because I want to get to 10,000 plays on last.fm :(

I just find myself agreeing even if I didn't catch the words. I am hitting 888 on ceefax these days.
