apparently 'alien love triangle', which is 30min long, has been screened so officially 'exists' now. it was a weird phantom credit, which found its way into thomson's biographical dictionary of film, till then.

im including tv coz why not. apart from the dogme ones and morse doubt anyone remembers em.

cherubim and seraphim is the one where morse goes to a rave isn't it?

Despite his love of opera and classics Morse shows some interest in and empathy with the prevailing youth culture and its music, although it is utterly alien to him. On one occasion, when listening to some homemade acid house music, Morse becomes excited as he spots a sample of the Hallelujah Chorus.

still voted 28 days later tho.

I quite love Sunshine.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

A Life Less Ordinary is up there with A Fish Called Wanda as one of the most unwatchable films I've ever sat through the first 30 minutes of, and then switched off.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

re Wanda or Life Less Ordinary? Have always hated the former, I know that puts me in a minority.

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

A Fish Called Wanda is a mess of a film.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

An unfunny mess at that.

I remember A Life Less Ordinary being extraordinarily, incredibly bad.

2nd-place ladyboy (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

It was ordinarily bad.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

It was better than The Beach.

James Mitchell, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

I wouldn't even watch that one, though. A Life Less Ordinary at least looked promising to me when I was drunk and had HBO.

trainspotting, although i dig 28 Days Later and Sunshine, also think that Millions is pretty great kids' movie.

Roz, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

Millions is pretty great as a kids' movie. It falls a little short as a grown-ups' movie and it's too long probly. Like Shallow Grave and Trainspotting a lot, the latter in particular suffers more dislike for its ubiquity as a student halls poster than its faults as a movie. Remember quite enjoying Life Less Ordinary the one time I saw it. The Morse Gets On One episode was weak, but not really cos of the direction. Masonic one was okay I think. Haven't really had the desire to watch the others. Sunshine must be better than the Doctor Who ep. that ripped it I guess.

Voting Shallow Grave for attic full of holes and Kerry Fox.

shallow grave overrated (by the people who rate it), the characters' motivations are completely opaque and their actions more or less random.

will rep eternally for sunshine though.

ledge, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

hang on, inspector morse? i'm guessing he hadn't developed his signature style (whatever that is) by then.

"shallow grave overrated (by the people who rate it), the characters' motivations are completely opaque and their actions more or less random."

Are they opaque or random?!?!?! MAKE UP YOUR MIND!

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

have only seen 3.. thought Trainspotting was overrated, Sunshine underrated (would get my vote, if i would vote at all) and Millions (why did i watch it anyway) was cute, but would've expected more things from the premisse.

Ludo, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

more things from the premisse.

like more action! more amusement.. i.e. a better movie.

Ludo, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

the bits of Sunshine that do not involve a zombified monster are truly breathtaking, brilliantly-soundtracked and generally fucking awesome

they probably drink corporate water (country matters), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

pfff lightweight. xp.

ledge, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

Hahaha perhaps! But it's certainly not opaque.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

the bits of Sunshine that do not involve a zombified monster are truly breathtaking, brilliantly-soundtracked and generally fucking awesome

I've made peace with the Pinbacker character and that part of the story. It wasn't a path for the film to find its ending, but since Sunshine was a complete homage to golden era sci-fi, there had to be a villain.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

of the 4 I've seen, 28DL.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

I got all contorted over the Sunshine monster as much as anyone yet it's still the only film of his I have any desire to revisit.

28 days later is DQ'ed because of the awful pointless DV it was shot in... no excuse for a movie w/that budget to look so shitty

s1ocki kong country (cankles), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

Hm yes, I may have overstated my case a little. I thought di Caprio was fine in The Beach, and I liked the locations. It does have the worst ending I have ever seen though - I'm not backtracking on that

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, 28 Days are all great. I really disliked Millions for some reason. LIfe Less Ordinary I barely remember.

I'm not a huge Boyle fan, but it is astounding to me that there are poeple not sent into laughter paralysis by A Fish Called Wanda.

it was funny at the time but every time I've tried to watch it over the past ten years I've barely cracked a smile. The score is really overbearing and awful, for one thing.

boyle's style seems like it should drive me crazy, all the constant advertisement-ish energy, but he makes it work imo. maybe it's cuz he has a real instinct for emotion and storytelling

turds (Hungry4Ass), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:56 (twelve years ago)

i have yet to see a boyle flick i don't like, i will even mildly stan for 'millions'. but that probably comes from avoiding slumdog mill, LLO, and the beach.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)

i've seen most but not all of his more well-known films (slumdog millionaire, trainspotting, 28 days later, 127 hours, shallow grave, sunshine and a chunk of millions). with the exception of sunshine, which i hated, they're all good to great. hyper-stylized in a manner that i might otherwise find oppressive, but h4a otm: he knows now to tell a story and generate an emotional response. trance sounds pretty cool, tbh. love twisty-turny "what's really going on?" psychothrillers.
