hammett was heavily reshot by copolla, so barely seems like a wenders film.
it's watchable but pretty second-rate and weird (because of the re-editing/reshooting)
wonder if there's an original cut

now is the time to winterize your manscape (will), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

I have no memory of him in "X" (altho to be fair I only really remember Denzel Washington)

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

Don't you remember Spike Lee as Denzel's diminutive friend?

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

I have been actively trying to forget him!

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

He would've been such a great monk.

(Voted for Joe, btw.)

M.V., Wednesday, 4 March 2009 03:32 (sixteen years ago)

I love him in Joe, The Candidate, Eddie Coyle (soon on DVD), Frankenstein and that X-Files ep (you know who Clyde Bruckman was, right?). Besides "Dueling Brandos" you left out the TV film where he played Joe McCarthy.

All of the above, and The Dream Team, which I voted for.

nine years pass...

Watched Joe last night for the first time in a long while. Conceptually/thematically, a key Nixonland film. But it felt like it just plodded along. Boyle's not bad, but I don't think he comes anywhere close to what he later did in The Candidate and Taxi Driver. Avildsen's Save the Tiger is far from perfect, and Lemmon has one or two monologues that are close to unwatchable (mostly I think he's good), but I think it's the better of the two films.

clemenza, Wednesday, 12 December 2018 22:25 (seven years ago)

well, Joe is a writer's movie (Norman Wexler) more than Avildsen's, and from what I can remember the script is fresher and less formulaic than Save the Tiger.
