Trainers - classic or a-dud-as?

I say classic if only because they are comfortable and hip at the same time. No need to believe the salesperson who promised you that "Those Gucci pumps will stretch in time."
I own three pair by the way: Adidas, Diesel and Lacoste. My favourite brand is Acupuncture.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sneakers you mean. I had a pair that looked cool but these stupider lookin gones are so much more comfortable. sigh. Shies, must the hurt us always?

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sneakers you mean. I had a pair that looked cool but these stupider lookin g ones are so much more comfortable. sigh. Shoes, must the hurt us always?

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate them, they're uncomfortable on me, I only wear them when none of my other shoes will go because I'm dressed in hippie pants. I have really high arches on my feet so heels really are more comfortable on me.

Ally, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I hate those high tech Nike things, daft as hell!...I have Airwalk and Vans at the moment, I like the more understated sort of trainers, so I say classic.

jel, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sneakers that look "hi-tech" (i.e. most of them nowadays)= dud. Why do people want their feet to look like that?

Sean, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sneakers are quite classic if you're jogging or doing jumping jacks or carrying a refrigerator down a flight of stairs. Otherwise, please. It's like wearing a tank top or nylon shorts.

I'm happy that there currently seems to be a resurgence (U.S. anyway) of various soft-leather middle-of-road shoes: that is, cool-looking casual shoes that are as comfortable as sneakers without being quite so puffy or ridiculous or obviously meant for athletics. I imagine the UK's always had plenty of those, but for quite a while in the U.S., it was Nikes or dress shoes with little in between.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just spent 25 minutes detailing exactly what trainers I own then my computer crashed and burned. Bollocks to it, I'm starting a thread about crisps while wearing my new Reebok Classic with the "ice" sole and blue camouflage detailing.

Greg, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, no, no, no, "soft leather middle of the road" walking shoes=DUD!!! Yikes, they're only appropriate for old men, and even then...! If you're walking long distances, running, then sneakers. If you're hiking, then boots. But if you need to wear shoes, then wear proper shoes, not "soft leather middle of the road" shoes.

Sorry if I got heated up, but I won't budge on this point.

Sean, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Balls to trainers. They're too expensive and don't suit me. DMs are bestest!

DG, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But DMs are like £50+, I know they last longer...

jel, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sort of classic if they're classics, you know like Adidas Roma/Italia/L.A. or Puma's. All Nike hi-tec trainers are overblown shite. My current trainers are the coolest I've ever had. They're brown New Balance with an orange N and here's for the neat detail: they're called 303. An acid house man like myself couldn't say no to that! ;)

Omar, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like well padded black oxfords. But the ancient pair of PJ Trainers are almost perfect canoe shoes.

anthony, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Sean, "proper shoes" are precisely what I'm talking about! Like ... Campers sort of shoes, which I know you UK bastards have, as the Delgados all wear matching ones. I'm not talking mocassains here, just normal shoes made out of organic material that are still comfortable and durable. I swear, it was like we didn't even have those here for the longest time.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had a response for you (in a word, no), but I realized I sounded insufferable, going on about shoes.

Sean, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic, especially Adidas. However I may buy something different next time, just for a change.

Ally C, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah they're called SNEAKERS you dumm pommy dumms. They are a good shoe, the sneaker - me I wear 'em almost exclusively even tho' it is COLD here & I'd do better to wear boots, I resent paying large money for clothes tho' & boots = exp./sneaks = CHEEP.

duane (doorag), Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

plus, hey DG, as boots go Docs ain't shit - 'cause they always split along the welts - plus, they don't even look cool.

duane, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oops i got my email addresss wrong, I forgot I'm gonna stop using Zfree. Man it is the slowest email service in the world, it takes like 10 min's for the inbox page to load.

duane, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've never had any DM splitting-related problems, and I think they look cool, so there.

DG, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I only just now got the subject header. Duh, Ally.

Ally, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

personal trainers suck, converse will always rock my little grunge haven

Geoff, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm an Adidas girl at heart. Shelltoes are the bestest - I am now on my third pair. I also have a pair of Grand Prix (white with navy stripes), Country Ripple (blue with white stripes and blue soles) as well as some proper Asics trainers for running. I am soooooo after some Adidas Italias, but I can only find white with green, which don't take my fancy. White with red on the other hand... Excuse me while I lapse into a trainer reverie for a while.

Madchen, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with you Madchen, I'm obsessed with getting those Adidas Italia re-issues (white-green are fine with me), although even more important is that 1936 training jacket. I *must* have it!

Omar, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trainers - oh so comfy but oh so unsexy. I have to wear them when I go out drinking as I would fall off any more difficult shoes. Trainers are also the only shoes that do not tear my feet to blistered shreds. But I only have 3 pairs (1 for exercise 2 for fun) so I am not really a trainer expert.

Emma, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

today i am wearin pumas. but my fav ever is bata bullet monkey boots. rock!
Who sang "I ain't never gonna hang up my rock'n'roll shoes" ? OK I'll tell you it was Chuck Willis.
(correct me if I'm wrong, it happens)

duane, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK the expensive "hi-tech" things can be called "trainers" if you wanna call something that, I care not a fuck for those anyway.

duane, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like Campers for the 1890s stylee (even though i'm not one for rocking the heritigazation shit normally)

i am Gola crazy. got 4 pairs. orange w/ black stripes, brown w/ yellow, blue w/blue, and horrible white with blue that make me look like a central park jogger (this last pair is only worn indoors)

gareth, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trainers = classic.

I've got about 27 pairs, mainly due to the fact that I never throw any away, at the moment I rotate between about 5 different pairs, a pair of black Adidas lawsuits, green adidas Marathon (late edition, black Nike Libero, some white Globe skate style ones that I got in Australia and some Nike outdoor running shoes.

I just love 'em, so much more comfy than shoes and so many different styles and types. In contrast, I only posess 4 pairs of shoes and haven't worn any of them in over a month.

cabbage, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yeah, Campers aren't trainers, they are "fashion shoes in a trainer style" you can't do any sport in them at all except pub sports.

cabbage, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trainers are the bollocks. I've only got grubby pairs at the moment and I can't wear my Etnies because they rip my heels up. That means that I'll have to go trainer shopping again soon which is, alongside getting books and records, the only kind of shopping I like.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Etnies are well sturdy! they're the duracell of trainers

gareth, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Got some Adidas Roma today, white with blue stripes. Very cool. Saw them green Adidas Italia but they have a ridiculous price, something around the equivalent of 100 Brit-pound. Fuck that. The Roma's are about half of that and don't have that ugly cross at yr heel.

Omar, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought this thread died

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well why'd you bring it up again then?

Ally, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I didnt ! Omar Hakim did!

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sure, blame him.

Ally, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Personal Trainers: Classic or Dud?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trainers are dead. Long live trainers.

Omar, it's that cross over the heel that I love!

Madchen, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate the idea of personal trainers. Train yourself or at least have a cool mentor liek that old pile of dung that trained Rocky, or the bald chumps that trained grasshopper

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 8 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar, you're a wannabe now. A failed poseur. ;-) I don't even WANNA see you on a wednesday.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 9 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What you all thought a thread on trainers would die like that?

Not at all Nathalie, that's true class! Although i noticed that the Adidas Roma were produced before the time they actually invented you know putting tiny holes into yr shoes for some ventilation :) Adidas Roma are unwearable if the weather is good, but they sure look good esp. with some corduroy flares. Word.

Omar, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Remember those spiky Acupuncture trainers? I had a pair. Bought'em even though they were a size too small. It hurt like hell. But finally they stretched and was I cool or what?

nathalie, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think that classics are most comfortable trainers - cross training sort get annoying quick. but forget them all... boots rule and that's that. just get some Caterpillar ones for cheap in Makro and you're sorted. Real walking machines. I still have the same cats i got 2 years ago - still going strong. In the same time i've been thorough shitloads of trainers.
