... or, the John Hughes thread, as inspired by Anna's school cliques thread. So, are his films charming enduring Classics or dated onanistic Duds?

Archel, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Breakfast Club is so classic as to require a new class of classicness to put it in.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sure does, Judd :)

But the end of Sixteen Candles where Molly Ringwald and that terrible Matt Dillon lookalike are sitting on the table with her birthday cake = most classic Hughes moment of all for me. Don't know why.

Archel, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Breakfast Club, like its horrible bastard-ass theme song, is to be killed. Of this there can be no mistake.

Ferris Bueller still is The One for me, and a friend was actually cast in Sixteen Candles, so that was fun. And that's all I have to say about John Hughes.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They say nothing to me about my life.

N., Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Terribly classic.

the pinefox, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Home Alone, Nick?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like a majority of Hughes films so I'll say classic. And Moliere really pumps my nads. I think one of my favorite movies from that era is the classic "Heaven Help Us" anyone recall this one?

Chris, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apart from Ferris Turd Flick, Hughes could do no wrong in the 80s. Some Kind of Wonderful was the final chapter, no? Those soundtracks. Sigh.

cuba libre (nathalie), Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic. But then you probably guessed that from the other thread.

Anna, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty In Pink, anyone? Sure, he didn't direct it but his baffling upward-social-mobility moralizing pawprints are all over it like a sickly paste. What does it mean? The mystery of it all was somehow lost when he flipped the genders around in Some Kind Of Wonderful. A "some rich kids are better than others and at any rate it beats being a geek" classic.

And hey!, lay off Ferris. Truancy is it. I mean Leisure Rules.

The Actual Mr. Jones, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Ferris Bueller is the only one that still looks good. I never liked Molly Ringwald, which may be not incisive and objective criticism, but it put me off a lot of his films. And the annoying bit at the end of The Breakfast Club, where they glamourised Ally Sheedy, and made her look worse.

Martin Skidmore, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha one day surely someone will defend ally sheedy's makeovah! she is incidentally far and away as all kno the best actress of the 80s, despite resolutely poor choice of vehicle

mark s, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She looked like Bjork beforehand = how can I possibly defend the makeover?

Vinnie, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That makeover thing made me sad. When I walked out of the theater I thought you were probably supposed to identify with one of the characters but I didn't.

Sean, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh wow Some Kind Of Wonderful made my heart leap when I first saw it, I wonder if it would have the same effect now. Mostly classic classic, although I've never quite rated Breakfast Club as much as others. With almost all of them though, it's been a few years - I should put in the hours and re-study.

Ally C, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NED ARE YOU FRIENDS WITH THE DONGER?!

chaki, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that "The Breakfast Club" was a fantastic movie because the copy of it I had was missing the last 15-20 minutes (basically, the end of AMH's story onwards). Seeing the end and what they did to Ally Sheedy was very disillusioning. (Although, she still had more dandruff than a hairdresser's waiting room! Take that, conventional beauty!) I was very entertained by the notion of all of these kids becoming friends, though, because this type of thing happened a lot in my high school. Well, it happened to me a lot.

Dan Perry, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just listened to the pretty in pink soundtrack at music school. The vynil is of the most fucked-up ive ever seen, i only listened because i could finally hear some OMD (being the masters of Atomic Kitten i got interested in them) and it had a horrible new order song. The best thing was the translated titles, "wouldnt it be good" was translated as "it wont be good"

Chupa-Cabras, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is like the best movie ever, fact. And The Breakfast Club is almost as good. The only way it'd be better is if they didn't make Ally Sheedy look like such an asshole at the end, I mean why would anyone want to look like Molly Ringwald, she's disgusting. I offer my panties to anyone who donates money to the cancer run.

Oh, and on a related note that's only kind of related, someone once said to me that I reminded them of Demi Moore in St. Elmo's Fire. It's the worst thing that's ever been said about me, and Judd Nelson isn't even in St. Elmo's Fire so it makes it that much worse.

Ally, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Breakfast Club rocks. Ferris Beuller = k-rub, unless it gets better at the end.

Graham, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whoomp

Ron, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go Molly :)

I have no recollection of starting this thread. But strangely enough the only videos I now own are Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't watched Pretty in Pink recently, but the Do You See 100 films piece got me thinking about the irony of the title again. Because that is without doubt THE UGLIEST DRESS ****EVER**** SEEN ON FILM.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The sad thing is that I was so impressed with this dress when the movie came out, I thought it was beautiful. Then I watched Pretty in Pink on television last year and was mortified that I could have ever adored anything so ugly.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The full title of the movie was Pretty In Pink (Despite All Rational Evidence).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought they were all classic at the time, but I think watching John Hughes films now would be horrific. Sometimes nostalgia should be curbed; for instance I recently re watched top gun. Amusing as an extended Gay love story but other than that almost physically painful to watch

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

hold on... molly ringwald interviewed stephen merrit and likes the magnetic fields? i think my brane just broke.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Precisely. Imagine reading it in the Metro.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Stranger things have happened...

Ok, who is Michael Landes (apparently Molly's co-star in When Harry Met Sally)? He looks pretty cute. Although he's no Andew McCarthy obv.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just about to take issue with someone's post. Then I realised they'd written it in 2002.

Some Kind of Wonderful is Hughes' nadir for me. Plus the scene in the Chicago Art Gallery in Ferris.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

G - you've got zenith and nadir mixed up again

chris (chris), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You can still argue with people from the past you know Mikey. Indeed, ILx would founder otherwise ;)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right. Blame the English comprehensive education system.

x-post

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

we call molly ringwald "mouldy ringworm" at my flat. You ought to hear what we call Andy McDowell though... go on, try to guess

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Should I wait for more guess or just spill my guts?

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Feeble Tweestress Who Cannot Act For Toffee? It's catchy.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

oh I never was good at keeping quiet

Blandy McFoul hahahahaha

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer mine

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll run it as an option past the flatmates, but I reckon that we'll probably keep using blandy. Its so comforting and familiar

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Cabbage was making a funny joke!

the bellefox, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

So did I. Curse our overdeveloped sense of sarcasm!

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it would involve anal.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No, he knows what I meant and because he's a little lacking in the lover's department, he likes to get his own back by correcting ny comprehension.

Smiley face thing.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite Hughes movie was Vacation. *ahem*

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how Ned never answered this question.
