you may have to walk a mile

Under the rules of the game the rest of ilx has done very well.

I went to a Quaker meeting once, it was very nice.

Another look at the belifnet quiz suggests Liberal Quakers are a 100% match for me. Are these guys cool? Does it just involve being quiet and then thinkin' baout god on yr own time if you want to? Do you have to love the Bible? Sorry for talking btw

I have no idea what is happening right now

catbus otm (gbx), Sunday, 5 August 2012 20:29 (twelve years ago)

I've been so some Quaker meetings, they're actually really lovely and moving.

I should really go more often, but it's quite far to walk and I never feel much like moving early on a Sunday morning.

They don't even mind if you read the Bible, really, they just like you thinking bout god - but also they are mad keen on living social justice as a way of putting their actions where their beliefs are. It's as much about living it as it is thinking about it. But Quakers are good ppl, I think you will like them.

Yeah I think next week I'll check it out. Quietly.

I liked Unitarians but they talked tooooo much

afaict from poking around on the internet the local group doesn't care if you believe in God or not, works for me
I just want a group of ppl that care about doing the right thing, somewhere to go where ppl are optimistic and caring for their fellow humans/earth

Yeah, Quakers don't talk much at all. OK, every now and them someone might stand up and testify a bit about what they've been doing, but you sit in silence for half an hour, just feeling the presence of goodness, and it's surprisingly moving. I totally heartily recommend going and hanging out with Quakers for a bit. They don't have priests and whoever leads the meeting often changes from week to week, everyone pitches in. It's lovely.

Actually, you inspire me, I should get my arse in gear and go next Sunday.

this sounds awesome. i just wish there were some quaker places near where i live :(

dell (del), Sunday, 5 August 2012 20:56 (twelve years ago)

first american denomination to allow women to speak in church iirc

ows and anti-war types could learn a lot from quakers (of course quakers have been hugely influential on both)

^^ not technically a quaker

the late great, Sunday, 5 August 2012 21:11 (twelve years ago)

can't find my copy of armies of the night but there's a moving passage at the end about a berrigan-led hunger strike that involved a lot of quakers

the late great, Sunday, 5 August 2012 21:13 (twelve years ago)

the point about the sitting in the circle is that it's supposed to make a connection that helps the collective decision-making process proceed in "good faith"

the late great, Sunday, 5 August 2012 21:14 (twelve years ago)

also, i wish there were more protests geared around the power of silence. attending a thing and hearing a bunch of people getting up and essentially preaching to the converted seems kind of pointless to me? unless you have someone who's just an incredible speaker. but i don't think most twenty-somethings are going to fall into that category

i'd rather attend a demonstration where people were walking silently instead of chanting slogans, looking for excuses to get angry at cops, etc

dell (del), Sunday, 5 August 2012 21:21 (twelve years ago)

quakers also commit and follow through, and prefer the gradual tide instead of creating a spectacle in the vain hope of provoking a tidal wave

xp

like they've been protesting torture and unlawful imprisonment pretty much since winter 2001, they don't just put it down and pick it back up when there's a street party

the late great, Sunday, 5 August 2012 21:30 (twelve years ago)

your boring friday night?
