Your BBC fantasy teams: who and why?

I've just picked my Fantasy Team on the BBC league and joined the ILE League. Thanks to Steve for setting it up!

I went for proven goalscorers who I'm convinced will be regulars for teams that I expect to go a fair way, or ones that have some easy looking group games. In order of weighting: Christian Vieri (good form, Italy look the best team in the weaker half of the draw), Hernan Crespo (a top striker for maybe the strongest team, Argentina), Raul (top man for Spain, who are in a weakish group), Ronaldo (was scoring goals for Inter late in season, and Brazil have China and Costa Rica in their group), David Trezeguet (will play central for the champs (Henry may play wider), was top scorer in Italy this year), Patrick Mboma (I fancy Cameroon this time, from a non-scary group), Luis Figo (Portugal have South Korea, Poland and USA in their group).

The Pinefox's BBC Fantasy XI =

1 Crooksy / 2 Lawro / 3 Motson / 4 Trevor / 5 Alan / 6 Gary / 7 Gubba / 8 Davies / 9 Sindstadt / 10 Stubbsy / 11 Reidy, I suppose, though he somehow lacks the gravitas of the others. (Once upon a time we could have named Lynam, Tyldesley and others here...)

the pinefox, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Carsmile perhaps you can explain what all that 'league' stuff is about.

the pinefox, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Raul (SPA)
Patrick Mboma (CAM)
Michael Owen (ENG)
Thierry Henry (FRA)
Zinedine Zidane (FRA)
Emmanuel Olisadebe (POL)
Rivaldo (BRA)

Why? Ours is not to reason why.

indeed i can Dr The Pinefox. on the BBC World cup website, there is a fantasy football type competition where one picks the seven players one thinks most likely to score goals from the selection of midfielders and forwards on offer and rate them from 7 to 1. The player rated 7 scores 7 points for each goal, rated 6, 6 points per goal and so on. I have set up a friends league for ILE to compete against one another, to see who is the best, innit.

CarsmileSteve, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FC Stevo line up as:

Crespo (Argentina)
Raul (Spain)
Trezeguet (France)
Henry (France)
Vieri (Italy)
Owen (England)
Ronaldo (Brazil)

stevo, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where do you get the PIN and the password, or is it an ILE secret?

Billy Dods, Monday, 20 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sign up here Billy. Not sure if they allow Berwick Rangers fans to participate ;)

stevo, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me in Steve! My world beaters contain two Spurs players - how can I fail?

David Trezeguet (FRA) Raul (SPA) Ronaldinho (BRA) Henrik Larsson (SWE) Vicenzo Montella (ITA) Milenko Acimovic (SLO) Christian Ziege (GER)

Jonnie, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gone out on a bit of a limb for a couple of players who may not even be in their nation's first-choice 11... also banking on a couple of sound thrashings at the group stage:

Batistuta; Trezeguet; Rui Costa; Luque; Luizao; Beschastnykh; Ballack*.

(* - anyone who does that to Liverpool can't be ignored).

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Terrible Men XI:

Thierry Henry (FRA)
Christian Vieiri (ITA)
Ronaldinho (BRA)
Michael Owen (ENG)
Emmanuel Olisadebe (POL)
Hernan Crespo (ARG)
Dario Silva (URU)

Why? Ignorance.

N., Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hang on, there's only VII of them, what was I thinking?

N., Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thierry Henry(FRA)Rivaldo(BRA)Hernan Crespo(ARG)Christian Vieri(ITA) Michael Owen(ENG)Zinedine Zidane(FRA)Raul(SPA)

I'm a sucker for the big names.

Ronan, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I chose lots of players you've never heard of because your football knowledge is poo:

F Ljungberg (SWE)
F Arce (PAR)
P Mboma (CAM)
T Henry (FRA)
C Yang (CHI)
D Silva (URU)
F Totti

(Actually I just chose names I liked the look of (except most of them are rub without first names))

Graham, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is going to come down to order of preference isn't it, either that or F Arce getting a hat trick in the first game...

oh, btw, everyone who's put a team up is now accepted into the league :)

CarsmileSteve, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Infectious Tigers were going to have Paul "he's an infectious tiger clive" Scholes on board but then I realised I could buy all strikers and got carried away.

Ronan, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike has made key point: those who end as TOP SCORERS will surely tend to score lots in one go - a couple of hat-tricks, or whatever - and may not have to get all the way to the Final.

Lineker 86: 3, 2, 1.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's worth pointing out at this point that you can change your team between the end of the second round matches and the quarter finals, so you do get the opportunity to remove a player who's scored lots but who's team has not made it through.

CarsmileSteve, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't that what happened in 94???? Russia not going anywhere , then thrash Cameroon 6-0 with one player scoring hatful, instant golden boot.

chris, Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mm. The thing is, just cause players in teams who don't progress might get a hatful, doesn't mean you're better off picking a player from an unfavoured side. Unless you're playing a risky game and picking unlikely players in the hope of topping the BBC's nationwide rankings in some kind of freak result scenario. I'm sticking to my unimaginative choices.

I suppose it is a good idea to look a teams in groups with potential whipping boys though.

N., Tuesday, 21 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

About A Boy Is A Really Bad Film

Christian Vieri
David Trezeguet
Michael Owen
Raul
Hernan Crespo
Emmanuel Olisadabe
Oliver Neuville

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Salenko was top scorer in 94. Did Baggio not pass him out? Or even Stoichkov? Either Stoichkov joint top with Salenko or just Stoichkov says my friend here.

Ronan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Baggio only scored 4 in 94 didn't he? 2 against Nigeria, 1 against Spain, 1 against Bulgaria. Anyway, yr Russian was joint top scorer with Hristo.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why? Just because Raul (esp)
Owen (eng)
Crespo (arg)
Totti (Ita)
Ronaldinho (Bra)
Trezeguet (Fra)
Tomasson (Den) ahhh, the dreaming Spireites

chris, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't know why i'm surprised, but no gurls have yet signed up for this, c'mon ladies it's very easy ;)

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
Has anyone entered the one for this season's premiership? I am doing rub.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Good team name though, Nick.

Is it too late to join? Will someone invite me into their little league? I don't see the point otherwise ("hurrah! I'm up to 43173rd!").

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I nicked the name off the back of the Sun when Man U made fools of themselves at the superponce club tournament in Rio a few years ago.

I'm not sure if one team can be in more than one league. Don't think it's too late to join - it's a monthly competition anyway (mainly, anyway). Why don't you set an ILE one up Mike and I'll see if I can join it with my existing team or not.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I think only the chairmen of Friends' Leagues are bound to just one league with their team... I shall endeavour to set up an ILE League now.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh bollox - I couldn't add you as you're part of that other league. Ho-hum. Anyone else want to play with me?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and here's the ILE league. C'mon, if just one person joins me it'll at least resemble the SPL.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonesy I'll play if you want (though I've never done this before and I'm not sure of my position on fantasy football). Wouldn't want you to be lonely. Can I buy super Stevie Flack?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're not going to take this seriously..

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevie Flack? C'mon now, you've only got £50m to play with. You'll want bleedin' Rivelino next.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Check yr email Mike.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Half an hour and still no sign of anything, Nick. Did you use an e-pigeon?

Yahoo or the other one? Rush-hour on the information dual carriageway.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Yahoo - just add PIN no. 204 144

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry about that... took an hour for yr message to show up. We are now THREE.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 12 September 2002 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)
