johnny crunch, Friday, 6 March 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

voting Zodiac, but I haven't seen You can Count on Me.

mizzell, Friday, 6 March 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

I'm picking my favorite of the ones I've seen, rather than the one that Ruffalo is best in.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Friday, 6 March 2009 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

You Can Count On me. What a depressing list.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 March 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

In the Cut - not b/c it's a great movie, but it's the first time I noticed him and I fell in love.

milk plasma (Jesse), Friday, 6 March 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

Just Like Heaven (2005) .... David

genuinely one of the worst movies ever made

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Friday, 6 March 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

when will good movies get Cure song titles?

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 March 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

love y.c.c.o.m. (is there a laura linney poll?) he's good in zodiac and i love the movie, but i don't think of it as his movie really.

in the cut is some bullshit, as they say.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 6 March 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)

This is correct. The man should've won awards for that performance.

13 going on 30 is well-loved, i think

horseshoe, Friday, 6 March 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

Ruffalo is great :) i've seen about 10 of those.. You Can Count On Me is the predictable vote (i'll put it in anyway) but i thought he did a really fine job in Zodiac, Eternal Sunshine, and the charming Just Like Heaven as well.

Ludo, Friday, 6 March 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

how did I manage to meld "The Dentist" and "Dr Giggles" into the same movie

mizzell, Friday, 6 March 2009 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

oh man i watched Blindness a few days ago, don't watch that. not even ruffalo can save a movie against the overwhelming annoying-ness of julianne moore. also a terrible film in general.

I caught maybe half plus of The Normal Heart on HBO last night, better than I would have expected and a good performance from Ruffalo. Definitely humanized the NYC AIDS crisis for me in a new way even though my parents had told me about friends of theirs who died of AIDS around that time.

Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 04:05 (eleven years ago)

first hour felt a little clunky & awkward but Bomer & Ruffalo's chemistry really helped the 2nd half. I cried so much. The story that Kitsch's character tells about flying with his partner was heartwrenching.

I dunno if it goes far enough for some, but if this and Dallas Buyers Club get enough attention, maybe there will be more room for more of these stories to be told.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 05:27 (eleven years ago)

I was just a kid - AIDS was all over the tv and advertising but it was never clear to me what it was, just that I was supposed to be terrified & the grim reaper was going to get me somehow with a bowling ball? My parents were so oblique about it, like they never even explained to me who was dying or why I was supposed to be scared or anything...the information theyd been given by the media clearly made them uncomfortable. it still bothers me that they couldn't just tell me that people were dying. Even my school went about it weirdly. It really makes me kind of angry now.

I think that's why I keep wanting to know more. To somehow atone or make up for what I wasn't told/didn't understand all those years ago. idk.

Just for something to do, saw Begin Again tonight--that, and I usually like Ruffalo, sometimes a lot. Never saw the director's earlier film, Once.

Some of it made me squirm, as in "What universe is this?" Are there huge pop stars today who sound like Keira Knightley's boyfriend? (Honestly, are there? He sounded like some generic late-'80s guy to me. Maybe things have come full circle, I don't know.) Ceee-Lo's funny in his scene. The final scene, where Knightley shows up at the boyfriend's sold-out show, seemed to echo a scene or two in Nashville, but that's probably just me. Ruffalo's okay, unless you don't like him, in which case there's just way too much Ruffalo.

clemenza, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 02:17 (eleven years ago)

I believe Keira Knightley's boyfriend in the film is a huge popstar in real life so...

Number None, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 11:10 (eleven years ago)

So I learned when I read a couple of reviews last night...I can only hope he doesn't sound like himself in the real world. (Didn't realize Ruffalo's business partner was Mos Def, either.)

clemenza, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 12:35 (eleven years ago)

You didn't recognize Adam Levine? I thought you were a pop-music guy.

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 12:46 (eleven years ago)

I know who Bobby Sherman is, but I have my gaps. I remember when he hosted Saturday Night Live a few years ago, I had no idea who he was then, either, and evidently promptly forgot him.

I saw at least one critic complain that Ruffalo was just too "nice" to come off as a contention asshole (in a just cause) like Larry Kramer in The Normal Heart... apparently ALEC BALDWIN originally was cast in that HBO version. That certainly woulda solved that problem! (seeing Baldwin play both gay and Jewish, oy)

and Matt Bomer won a Golden Globe for TNH. He was fine, but I thought the single best scene was the Health Dept guy (Joe Mantello) breaking down in the GMHC office and attacking Weeks/Kramer.

surprised/not surprised no ones mentioned 'i know this much is true', its a tough watch and ruffalo playing identical twins feels gimmicky but i found it to be a real powerhouse, just incredibly well done, super tragic obv but rich and true... maybe part of its the setting but it felt like an eugene oneill play in some ways; best thing ruffalo and cianfrance each have ever done imo
