haven't seen the whole thing in years, but had a chunk of it on TCM during a holiday and my brother-in-law was enraged by it. "It's just this family's life! What is the point?"

I remember going to a community/church production as a kid. It's very salt-of-the-earth seriocomic sacrificing-immigrant-Mom stuff.

She gets point for enduring ill treatment from Spencer Tracy on the set of A Guy Named Joe, apparently, and not making her second-half romance with Van Johnson seem completely ridiculous (not so much the 18-year age gap as he doesn't deserve her). Dalton Trumbo wrote both the snappy patter and the purple poesy.

(Pauline Kael mentioned it in an interview as one of the "terrible" WW2 movies too beloved by Spielberg, who remade this one.)
